Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series

You’ve probably seen the Land Cruisers 70 series on the road, they look like old cars because they originally came out in the early 80s but Toyota actually still builds them today with just minor changes. They’re probably one of Toyotas best sellers locally and on more than one occasion I’ve passed by the dealership only to be told the whole range was completely sold out. It’s mind-boggling which is why I’ve always been curious to drive one. Why are they so popular?

Personally, I became a big fan of the LC70 after coming upon Andrew White’s youtube channel. I was at one point considering getting a Land Rover Defender when I found one of his videos where he compares the two. Soon I was watching hours and hours of videos of him talking about his LC70 and all the stuff he’s done to it on his YouTube channel. At one point I was even contemplating renting an LC70 camper vehicle similar to his and going overlanding in South Africa.

My FJ is turning 9 years old in a few months and so I’ve been looking for a possible replacement for the past few years. Whatever I replace the FJ with has to be comfortable, durable and spacious. I was considering the 4-door LC70 because I loved the way they looked and their simplicity. The exterior hasn’t changed much since the early 80s so the cars don’t really get old in the same way the Mercedes G class or Land Rover Defender don’t get old. So last weekend I borrowed a friend’s 2-door Land Cruiser to test drive, and after giving it back I’m not sure I want one anymore.

The problem I had with the car was that it was just exhausting to drive. I drove the LC70 an hour out into the desert and then an hour back, and it felt like I had just gone on an 8-hour adventure. I can’t really pinpoint why the car exhausted me so much, it might have been because of the simple seats or the rough suspension, it might have been because the AC wasn’t cooling properly or maybe because the cabin noise was just too loud. Most likely, it was because of all of the above combined. Because the car hasn’t really changed much from the 80s, it lacks a lot of comforts. There’s no sound isolation which meant the interior was pretty noisy, it also meant there was no weather insulation so although the AC was blasting ice cold air, the car interior just wasn’t getting cold enough. The ride was pretty rough even on highways and the car I drove had an upgraded suspension so I can only imagine how much worse the ride is with the stock setup. The car was draining, even on short trips, driving felt like a chore.

On the other hand, I really love the way the car looks and I also love the barebones interior. Do we really need 3D surround view, heads-up displays, lane change and parking assist, massage chairs and digital dashboards? No, we don’t. The interior cabin although not that spacious was very bright and had incredible visibility because of the large windows and very small pillars. Most importantly though, the Land Cruiser felt like it would take a lot of abuse (and it can). But my favorite thing about the car has to be the fact when you’re buying an LC70, you’re actually buying a brand new vintage car.

The Land Cruiser 70 series starts close to KD9,000 and goes up past KD12,000 so they’re not cheap. You also don’t have many options locally, for example, the car comes with either a grey or beige/brown interior but the local dealer only gets the beige/brown one. Exterior colors are also limited to like 4. Do I love the car or do I hate it? I’m not really sure. I want to say I love it, but would I trade my FJ for one? The answer is no.

Hmm, maybe Defender is what you would enjoy more. Especially with the new one rumored around 2020, the current 90 and 110 are going to well retain their value.

Ive owned an fj for two years and the 70 series for around 6, and i recently got a defender, and just for the few months that defender has been with me i can tell you its miles ahead of the toyota in comfort and usability.

No the defender is way more comfortable and as for andrew whites reviews his might be more comfortable because he has a thousand mods on his car, but when your comparing the defender to the toyota the defender wins. The only thing i miss with the toyota was its speed.

The exhausting ride is typical for a body-on-frame, solid-axled leaf-sprung truck with minimal noise and heat insulation. It’s as simple and bare bones as it gets. The upside to all this is that the frame and suspension lends itself to better off road capability, and the simple tried and trued design means it will outlast any modern day CUV.

Beduins love this car, along with the old toyata pickup (abu shanab) and the classic Nissan patrol that is still produced and sold.

How about Dyno Mating it after you buy it.. sure its expensive adds some weight but wouldn’t it help with the noise and insulation ?

Mark. why don’t you consider the Nissan Patrol Safari? It comes in both 2 door and 4 door versions, and also is quite a classic. Plus the ride quality is not as bad either.

You can’t buy a Safari with a beige interior. They discontinued it in 2010 after the new one got launched. The only option is the black interior. Ofcourse now they have a Super Safari version with the Tan interior, but that is too expensive.

BDW, the Super Safari 2019 (Y61) is being offered in manual now in those two special colors for exterior (white/gray) and (golden/gray) in the 2 or 4 doors configuration. But of course it is overpriced, should have been in the 11000KD range

Well there are a lot of configurations the Y60 is being offered in right now

Kuwait dealership has them all (at least did in 2017) from the basic one to the top dog Super Safari

The basic ones [2 or 4 doors] are referred to as standard which come in aluminium wheels and no sunroof (manual transmission only)

Then comes the mid range [2 or 4 doors] with and without sunroof (auto/manual transmission)

Then comes the top dog which is referred to as *Super Safari* [2 or 4 doors] (white and gray exterior or golden and gray exterior) + tan leather interior, screen, bigger more comfortable seats, a winch is optional and auto transmission was standard till 2017 and 2018, but 2019 has the manual transmission as well

I would personally get the Defender , it has more class and it looks respectable. The land cruiser 70 is driven mostly by Bedouins (Kuwaiti Hillbillies) and they have no respect for traffic laws or people’s lives – in reference to your tragic article about the death of an infant on a highway). If you know anyone who works in the oil sector Ahmadi or lives below the 6th ring road they will tell you these Hillbillies enjoy drifting in their land cruisers. My friends and I refer to it as the ISIS vehicle from the war in Iraq two years ago when Daeish was roaming the desert in these Land cruisers. Long story short the Defender is way better.

What on earth has a car got to do with who prefers to drive it and who does not? That’s the most stupid/racist comment I’ve read today.

Is there a local dealer here in Kuwait that deals with Dyno Mat ? Any one here dealt with them ? Know the price range ?fixing charges etc ?

Getting it from the States is an option, but to get the quantity I require for a project ,the weight alone would kill in shipping charges

let me break it down for you Mark,

I driven most off-road trucks and owned quite a few,

LC70 series, Heavy Duty Works everywhere, Comfort = 0
Defender- Tried the 2 Door Diesel, Very Weak on the road but total beast off road, Comfort wise its way comfortable if you put the LC70 in the image though interior is not as comfy as the LC only suspension wise
Wrangler- Awesome off roader not so bad on the road but reliability and dealer issues move me away
LC200- I had a Diesel one V8 Twin Turbo Fully ARB’d in white maybe you saw it in the streets, awesome truck all-around highly recommended if you want a 7 seater truck, very comfortable and reliable and powerful don’t like the petrol versions though
G Class- Awesome Urban Driver also off roader but who takes G class off-roading tried the G63 2016 beast on the road not so comfortable suspension and turning wise.
lastly after trying most of the trucks I settled with a FJ Cruiser 2018 my self and spec’d it to my liking Fox suspension 16″ wheels and BFG tires not my first FJ and still love it.
I am looking forward for the new Suzuki Jimny High Sierra looks like a fun off road Toy

Sorry for boring you out
