Zain Beam Follow-up Review

Back in February Zain hooked me up with Zain Beam to test out. Previously I had been using B Wirless (WiMD) but my direct line of sight with their tower had been blocked and so my connection was no longer stable. A regular LTE connection in my area was also unstable with speeds varying between 2Mbps to 4Mbps, maybe a bit more sometimes. After trying out Zain Beam in February for a couple of weeks, I loved it so much I decided to commit for 2 years and subscribe to it. This is now my follow-up review around 4 months later.

If you want to read my previous post on Zain Beam including details on the installation process, click here.

Since I installed Zain Beam the internet connection has been pretty flawless. I subscribed to their 20Mbps service but I rarely get speeds less than 27Mbps, in fact, it’s usually always around 30Mbps. For those of you with LTE connections in fancier less congested areas, you’re probably not impressed with my internet speed, and that’s understandable. I find it frustrating that my phone’s speed can reach 120Mbps in some areas, but yet my Zain Beam connection at home gets me only 30Mbps. It’s even more frustrating now to see my friends get upwards of 600Mbps with 5G as well. But, 30Mbps is the fastest connection I’ve ever been able to get in my apartment.

That’s the thing you need to be aware of when comparing Zain Beam to other internet services in Kuwait. Not everyone has fiber optics or fast LTE in their areas. Zain Beam is meant for people like me living in heavily congested areas with no fiber, no decent 4G connection, and no 5G either. So 30Mbps is super fast for me, it’s three times faster than my previous 10Mbps connection I had with B Wireless, and the only other connection that I can get which is faster than mine… is the 40Mbps Zain Beam package.

Another thing I want to point out is that Zain also limits the amount of Beam users in an area, I guess to keep the experience consistent. A friend of mine wanted to get Beam in my area but Zain told him all the slots had already been filled.

In the 4 months I’ve had Beam I did run into one issue. Around a week or two after signing up I woke up one morning and found my internet down. No biggie, I called up Zain to talk to support and this is where I ran into a problem. With B Wireless, if I had a problem I’d call support and someone would pick up right away. The support guy would then try and solve my problem over the phone and if the problem was more complicated, he’d either tell me he’d call me back or that a technician would be sent over. Fairly simple and the whole process of solving my issue would take less than 5 minutes. With Zain, on the other hand, you don’t talk to a support persona, instead, you have to call up the regular Zain call center and leave a complaint and then someone gets back to you. Wouldn’t be that big of a deal but the process to leave a complaint takes forever! It took the call center guy over 10 minutes (not exaggerating) just to file my complaint. Their process for taking complaints is excruciatingly long, that’s over 10 minutes just to tell them my internet is down and for them to tell me someone will call me back. Other than that I didn’t really have any issues and that day it turned out my connection was down because they were doing maintenance.

With the launch of 5G last week the only thing that I’m bothered with right now is the price vs speed ratio compared to 5G. Viva, for example, offers 5G at KD25 a month (although with a 250GB limit) which is how much I’m paying, so I now feel like my connection is starting to feel overpriced. If 5G in my area can get me speeds over 100Mbps I’d be super upset that I’m committed to two years of Zain Beam and just getting 30Mbps. What I’m hoping is that Zain will eventually upgrade the speed of their two Beam packages in the coming months from the current 20Mbps and 40Mbps options right now, to maybe 40Mbps and 80Mbps instead. That would make things more palatable when compared to 5G.

How can they increase dedicated speed for all Zain beam users in a particular area when they said their “slots” are filled? Won’t that mean they need newer hardware or reduce the number of users?
But yeah, I do think Beam should double the speeds. 40mbps unlimited for 25kd sounds reasonable.

I think it’s just the process of opening the bandwidth tap. For example, if they had 10Mbps dedicated to Beam for 10 users at 1Mbps per user. Then in theory they could just increase the bandwidth to 20Mbps and then give every user 2Mbps.

Hi mark,
I read your articles on beam and saw ur Twitter with u posting the results u got with 5g.
I also live in salmiya , and i have the regular Zain lte router , speeds are always horrible at night and fine in the morning . I live in a congested part of salmiya though . Was wondering what would you advice me to get beam or one of the 5g packages from viva ?
U have tested them all lol
I’d really appreciate your advice !:)

Thanks for your reply mark 🙂 do u mind me asking what block ur in ?
I saw on Twitter u were impressed with the 5g , had u not been signed up with beam is that what u would have gone for ?

Hasn’t Zain updated their coverage area?

I just went to the link and don’t see Salmiya listed in the area that supports Zain Beam.

Zain has been pissing me off lately. I’ve been living in Sabah Al Salem for over two years now, and my internet AND my phone signal and horrible. One bar all the way. I called them and they said it’s because I live on higher grounds that my signal is bad and currently “there is no solution”; my family lives on higher grounds in a different area and there it’s all OK. Rip offs the lot of them. Beam isn’t available in my area and I’m worried about upgrading to 5G and still suffer.

I had a viva line but ended up moving it to Zain when I signed up to Beam. Both Zain and Viva give me like 1 or 2 lines when in my apartment but what sucks is with viva I had signal in my basement parking and now with Zain I don’t. So now it’s pretty boring sitting in my car waiting for it to warm up when I don’t have internet on my phone. Only regret to moving to Zain.

I feel ya. I had Viva at first, but being someone who binge watches stuff on the internet and Netflix, I got the notification that I exceeded my daily limit, something Zain doesn’t apply to your subscription (it’s unlimited), but both were pretty bad in my area! >:(

well i knew i what i was committing to, just didn’t realize 5G would be out so soon and be so fast. Although not sure how fast 5G is in my area or if its even available so Beam might still be the fastest option available for me.

This is home internet right? 25KD a month seems awfully expensive. When I arrive in Kuwait in three weeks my internet will be provided in the flat by my company – no idea about the speed. A year or so down the line though I suspect my wife may want to rent privately. The kind of prices being quoted is frightening to me!

I pay 15KD a month for an LTE line that is pretty fast in my area – it’s a router you buy from the telecom and you can set up wifi extenders like any normal router.

It’s a lot less hassle than dealing with the landline stuff too

Hi Mark,

Can you please test latency on speedtest for Frankfurt and Amsterdam servers? 🙏

I don’t care much about speed since Zain LTE is constantly 30mbps+ in my area, but I might consider switching to Beam for better latency.

Good point on the congestion – A friend of mine gets terrible 4G speeds in his area and I borrowed his router before getting mine – the same exact equipment was no joke maybe 10 tiumes faster.

I was excited for 5g but after seeing the prices they’re charging right now no thanks. Hoping all the investment the telecoms made will bite them in the ass if they keep charging 45!!! kd a month

Yup, the Zain Bolt at the office gets 60-80Mbps, the exact same device at home gets 2-4Mbps. But around 500m from my place at a traffic light it’s back up to 30Mbps. On my roof? 5Mbps. Super frustrating.

i pay 18KD for 50mbps with KEMS Jetnet … for the past 9 years now, and its unlimited. i feel bad for the people that don’t have fiber boxes 🙁

I subscribed to zain Beam in the surra area since fiber is not available, i got the 40 mbps package and get 60 mbps consistently.

I’m very happy with the speed and ping, i had b-wireless (previously called wimd) and the speed was capped at 10 mbps and the ping was relatively high 160-190 range for gaming.

since the switch to beam i’m getting 110-130 range for gaming sessions, even initial load is snappier for some reason.

the only issue i’ve had is exactly like Mark had, my internet went down one day before eid, and it took ages to get a complaint registered. with wimd i would have had the issue resolved by the time the zain ticket was logged. additionally, by the time they solved the issue it took 5 days (granted this was Eid) but the problem is it was a configuration problem on their end, not a faulty setup from my end and could have been solved if they had a proper first line support.

Zain need to have a hotline for Beam subscriptions, you can’t expect to route me through customers trying to top up their eezee lines when im paying a 40 KWD a month subscription.

other than that, i don’t have any technical complaints, just the price needs to come in line with 5G subscriptions.

What I anticipate is that Beam tech can probably be migrated over to the 5G towers once they become more readily available, I’m not bothered with 600 mbps that caps at 500GB i would rather have an unlimited 60 mbps connection over data caps any day.

Right now 5G technology is in its infancy, the applications of a 600 mbps connection are not available (yet..) now its just for boasting that you have a super duper connection in speednet!

with the tech we have today, the highest bandwidth you require is around ~30 mbps for 4k streaming. nothing else.

Exactly the reason I didn’t bother with the service. All is well and dandy when it’s working fine but once there is an issue you have to call 107. The fact that you have to deal with them and then they have to push the ticket upwards to another department means it won’t be as fast and submitting a support ticket with an ISP that has a dedicated support number.

Before subscribing I called about upload speeds and the guy I talked to was barely informed in anything and said they only told us about download speeds. That’s exactly what I want to deal with when the internet in my house goes down for any reason lol people who can’t really help resolve my issue.

Sometimes that’s your only option, especially in congested areas that don’t have fiber

Let me warn you about VIVA 5G. I went to Sama mall in Egaila to ask about 5G . The guy ask me my address and apartment PACI number. He carefully checked the coverage of my building, then he called a friend for advice, and finally I went home without 5G. Keep PACI number with you, and ask to check the coverage very, very carefully. The coverage is different even in one building. So, the story about great high-tech is a bit different…

Has anyone tried and tested the 5G networks yet? Am i the only one not believing them when they say it really is 5G? I thought Trump isnt letting us have nice things…

I’m thinking on moving from Bwireless to Zain Beam.
Since Bwireless 20MB plan 429 KD per year. While Zain Beam 300 KD per year.
Huge difference.
