China Garden Review

Since Mark is back on his strict diet he asked to review a Chinese place called China Garden. I really enjoy good Chinese food but when it comes to Chinese take-out in Kuwait I’ve become quite skeptical with the options we have. I’ve tried a bunch of places and there doesn’t seem to be one that really stands out, a place that serves good Chinese food that isn’t overly greasy and that isn’t overly expensive.

China Garden is a place that has been around for a while (it’s located next to Showbiz/Holiday Inn), but was purchased by two Kuwaiti restaurateurs, revamped and reopened around a week ago. There are a few things that make China Garden stand out from their competitors. First off, they’re “Green”, meaning they’ve gotten rid of all their styrofoam boxes, got rid of the majority of plastics and aluminum and replaced them with paper take out boxes that are made here in Kuwait. Their plastic bags have been replaced with fully recycled and biodegradable brown paper while they ditched their plastic eating utensils and replaced them with sustainable bamboo forks and knives. Even their menu’s are made from recycled material.

When I usually order Chinese take-out I like to place an order for an appetizer, a chicken dish, a beef dish, and some noodles. I typically finish all the food on my own so when it came time to ordering from China Garden I decided to go with Sweet Corn Chicken Soup, Shrimp Spring Rolls, Orange Chicken, Beef Black Pepper, Mixed Noodles and Nutella Wontons for dessert (who can say no to anything Nutella?). The first thing that struck me once the food arrived is that there is no way I could eat all this food by myself. Their quantities are pretty big and the food I ordered could have easily fed two or three people and definitely not just one person. I basically had a lot of food leftover for dinner.

The food was generally pretty good and I did’t have any complaints. The soup wasn’t too watery and wasn’t too sweet with a good mix of chicken and corn. The Shrimp Spring Rolls were 6 decent sized pieces and they were nice and crunchy. The Orange Chicken was the most impressive, the dish is sweet and spicy and cames mixed with orange peels, chili peppers, ginger and chicken. It looked really appetizing. My “safe” dish that I always order is Beef Black Pepper because it’s really difficult to screw up a simple dish like this. China Garden’s Beef Black Pepper was pretty juicy, the beef wasn’t overly cooked and it wasn’t too saucy. My only complaint is that there were way too many large pieces of onions, something which they can easily fix (and should do so). The Mixed Noodles were the last things I ate and I found them neither bland or greasy and actually hit the spot quite nicely. Finally the Nutella Wontons were the perfect way to end the meal, the moment you bite down on the crunchy wonton you’ll be welcomed with the taste of delicious Nutella, not to the point where it feels like you’re drowning in chocolate, but enough to satisfy your Nutella urges.

The total for my meal was KD10.700 which seems like a lot for one person but like I previously said this meal could easily feed two or three people (if not more) and if I had two other friends over, it’d come out to around KD3 per person, which seems like a really reasonable price to pay for the quality of food you’re getting. I would definitely order again from China Garden, they have a decent sized menu with a lot of choices, not to the point where you feel overwhelmed but enough where they can satisfy everyone’s needs.

They’re open Saturday to Wednesday from 12PM to 12AM and Thursdays and Fridays from 2PM to 2AM. To order you can call them on 25720010 or 25720070. They’re also available on 6alabat.

Tried them last night and was not impressed at all. For the same price you can eat right next door at Tang Chao. Tang Chao is a billion times better, with high quality ingredients. If China Garden was in a different location, they might have had a shot, but right next to Tang Chao is business suicide.

The prices at China Garden are quite similar to other Chinese take out joints in Kuwait (like Wok Master for instance), but I thought their quality of food and quantity of food was greater than WM.

Tang Chao is a fancy Chinese restaurant in a hotel, it’s not Chinese take-out, so it’s not something I would compare. You could compare Tang Chao to Peacock for instance, but not Chinese take out.

thats the point. if tang chao is serving hotel quality food for the same price that china garden is serving bad quality, then theres something wrong.

Except that China Garden isn’t serving bad quality food and their prices are excellent for Chinese “take-out” which is in a complete category than Chinese cuisine that Tang Chao serves.

If what you’re saying is true, then why order Chinese food, when we can all drive to Tang Chao? One is fast food, the other is cuisine.

Hello,

We never compromise or skimp on quality ingredients at China Garden. It is a place we are both proud to own and proud to serve from to our closest friends and family. So far, thanks to Allah, our reviews have been nothing short of excellent.

As for our prices, we are comparible if not cheaper than many delivery restaurants in Kuwait.

Remember, Keep our Garden Clean πŸ™‚

i live at that area but i couldnt tell where exactly this place is,could you please give me a better direction,is it close to china kitchen?

China Garden is located opposite Burger King on Blajat St., near Happy Duck restaurant. It’s the second right turn after Holiday Inn/Showbiz.

But they don’t have a place to sit and eat, it’s only for take out/delivery and catering.

describe the orange chicken more, please. When I lived in the US, we had a neighbourhood Chinese restaurant called Mandarin Garden. It had the greatest orange chicken. It was coated with sesame and was a bit spicy with the perfect hit of sour, sweet and spicy. It was heaven with rice.

I don’t think the orange chicken I had was coated in sesame, but it was a bit spicy, with a little bit of sourness (is that a word? lol), slightly sweet and it was also slightly spicy.

I checked the description of the dish on 6alabat.com and it this is what it says:

“Chicken pieces in a sweet and spicy blend of freshly squeezed orange juice, brown sugar, chili peppers, and ginger.”

One thing I regret not trying out is their rice though, which they have a good selection of.

Hey AF,

We only use breast meat for ALL our dishes, including springrolls, soups, dumplings and wontons. Only our Chicken Lollipops are drumsticks.

I tried them a few days ago and was impressed with most of the dishes. Steer clear of the beef kindo though.pieces too big and too chewy.Otherwsie, its my new favorite chinese delivery restaurant. Curious though : what the hell is Panik? πŸ™‚

I have ordered from them last week and sweet and sour checkin came with 1/4 of the box only !!! for 3 KD i was not happy with it

Hey Sami,

We do apologize for this terrible mistake. Last week was during our launch and our kitchen was still without portion control.

Currently, all China Garden main dishes contain 250gms of protein, whereas many other places serve and are only obliged to legally serve 200gms.

Give us another shot, we’ll make it right!

Hi ChinaGarden
Set aside the incident we had. We will try it again for sure, to be honest the food was very good and we liked it.
Cheers

Amazing fresh & relatively cheap chinese food:
China Zone.
They have a brach in salmiya (25630101), jabriya (25354321) and shaab (22626050 22631989)
Dont miss the hakka noodles =)

In the mean while i’ll give china garden a try.

Thanx Patrick to introduce a best chinese food in kuwait”CHINA GARDEN” In my 25yrs of experience,CHINA GARDEN is the best for chinese food.

i ordered today, ornage chicken, beef with black pepper, nutella wonton and crab rangoon.its realy amazing & there price is also reasonable as well there quanitity of portion is quiet enough for two persons and there packing is the best packing in kuwait, totaly recycle brown paper.i would definitely order again from China Garden.Keep it up”CHINA GARDEN”We will keep ur garden clean.

Ordered tonight on your recommendation. 1.5 hr delivery time to Massila, dumplings were small and dry, orange chicken was ok but only half the box was full. Beef and broccoli had very little broccoli. And surprised that there was no white rice included like at every other Chinese restaurant in the planet. Sorry CG, I won’t be ordering again.

Hello Messila,

We do sincerely apologize about the late delivery, we just opened up, and it’s been hard getting more drivers.
The dumplings are made-to-order, we will investigate and refine cooking time.
As for Orange Chicken and the Beef Brocolli, we do use portion control, although it may look little, it is well above the 200gms served in most chinese restaurants in Kuwait.
As for Steamed Rice, we know of no Chinese delivery restaurant that provides this.

Thank you,
Ahmad & Ahmed

Hi,
I’ve picked up some food today (Thur 19 Apr)and I’ve the following comments on quality of food, speed/level of service and finally price:
Quality of food:
– I’ve ordered Beef Black Mushroom (beef cutlet quality was poor)
– Orange Chicken (chicken was dry compared to tender)
– Vegetale Noodles (it was too much cabbage than noodles, though the smell was very tempting) I’d expect to see noodles with addon not the other way around.
– Vegitable Springrolls (OK)
– Tom Yum Soap (this is the Indian version of the TYSoap, it was extemely hot to the extent I was unable to continue in addition to it was more soap than filling, e.g. very few floating stuff in there) I don’t believe I’ll order it again
– Nutella Wontons (very tiny portion of Nutella) thumps down
– Banana Toffee (the banana was not ripe enough so it was tastless)

Speed of service:
– I’ve made my order at the resturant and the cashier told me it’ll take 15min to have my order ready. Well, it took almost 30min to get my order.

Level of service:
– The cashier was quick and polite however I requested a menu to take with me, The cashier indicated that he’ll include one with my order inside the bag. When I got home there was no menu.
– Because I picked up the order myself and I live nearby, the food was very hot when I started to eat. That’s why I always like to pick up the food myself rather than waiting for delivery guys!
Price:
I believe that prices are high (20-30%) compared to other Chenese food competitors especially in Salmiya.

Hello Maho,

We appreciate your detailed feedback.

Here are our answers to your concerns:

Beef: Our beef is Fresh Australian Topside, though not a prime cut, it is used in almost all Chinese restaurants as it cooks fast on high heat, is very lean and it remains tender. (We’ve experimented with almost every cut, even Tenderloin turned tough with our cooking style.)

Orange Chicken: As we’ve mentioned before, we only use boneless, skinless chicken breast for all our dishes. As you know, white meat tends to be drier than red meat. Yet, there is a possibility the fry cook overcooked the batch. (We apologize.)

Noodles: At the Garden, our flagship Noodles contain a substantial amount of cabbage, over the years; our customers have came to know and like us for this. We also have customers who prefer less cabbage, more cabbage or even no cabbage at all! We are here to serve you, please specify the next time you give us the pleasure of serving you.

Vegetable Rolls: They are homemade every day. Thank you.

Tom Yum Soup: Our soup is spicy; it is our interpretation of the many we’ve enjoyed over the years. We are sorry the spice level and content were not to your liking.

Nutella Wontons: We have tried adding more Nutella inside the Wonton, yet after multiple failed attempts (the seal broke with the heat and released the content into the oil.) Now, we finalized what we believe is the equilibrium.

Banana Toffee: As we don’t carry bananas in our kitchen, we are at the mercy of buying them per order from the grocery store next door. We apologize our selection was not correct this time.

Thank you for your comment on our staff, we are very proud of our employees and we try to always keep them happy, in return, we see them sharing this with our customers.

Speed: Today (well yesterday) was Thursday and it was around 8pm when you ordered. During this time, we are (al7amdulla) extremely busy with multiple orders simultaneously. We do understand that Take-Out customers should be a priority, and we will from now on ensure orders waiting are clearly labeled and attended to instantly.

Price: We firmly believe that if you analyze quality/quantity/eco-packaging, you will know why our prices are justly above our competitors. Each and every item on the menu has been priced individually to ensure that both our costs are covered and our customers are not nickled and dimed.

Again Maho we sincerely appreciate your comments, and would love to get a chance to serve you, our neighbor again.

Hi Ahmad&Ahmed (ChinaGarden)
Thank you for your poistive feedback. I will certainly pass by again to order as I’d like to try the Hot&Sour soap and some other dishes on the menu.
As I said the smell of the noodles was very good and I didn’t suffer from adding too much garlic in the food which was a plus (I’d one soda can only!!!) which was fantastic.
Cheers
Maho

@ Patrick – Could not agree more with your decision on CG! Thanks for recommending.

@ China Garden – Compliments to the Chef! The food was great. Totally love your concept of being eco friendly / caring for the environment. A bit pricy but good food.

Thanks L for your compliments, will forward to our Chef!

About pricing, we tried very hard to minimize costs on our customers and we carefuly studied our pricing model. But as you know, high quality food, staff and “green” packaging come with a hefty price.

Your continued business keeps us running and working towards a cleaner, greener and more eco-concious Kuwait.

Thank You!
