Simple Fixes

Local architect Asseel Al-Ragam has been posting a series of “Simple Fixes” for different parts of Kuwait on Twitter. It really wouldn’t take much to improve the different places and her animated series is a way of showing that.

She’s done a few so far including ones for the 4th Ring Road, Kuwait City and even Salmiya. Check them out here.

lol putting a bike lane in the middle of the freeway is a death sentence especially in this country where ppl rarely follow traffic laws.

Already crowded as it is. And bike lane is only good in winter. In summer you would die from heat.

I really like them! Simple but well thought out

Maybe just in reality widen the road to accommodate the bike lane rather than have it take a car lane

How feasible is that, widening the road that is? Also as another commentator said people will be rarely using the bike lane during summer, wouldn’t be simply better to use that extra space for another lane?

The term “simple fixes” is troubling. I mean it’s an architect’s job to dream but to bring it to reality and actually consider real-life applications, they usually neglect. I agree with what other commentators have said:

Traffic laws would have to be adjusted (the signs, speed limits, traffic light timings) for the entire area and heck even surrounding areas. A TRAIN, an actual train how is that cheap at all, creating a train system for the entire country is definitely expensive I’d say over 1 billion KD (though I have to admit I can’t price it with precision). Little things like how the bike lane will be a waste of space during summer unless we invest in long km-long shading and possibly ac and wow the costs keep adding up.

Also why should we kill the existing trees and replace them with “fancier” trees. The shade for the bridge is I guess an ok change, I don’t know if the govt is in a hurry to add shade for a random around 100m bridge.

Honestly it’s better to live your life grateful for what you have, rather than fantasizing for what could be. However if her posts help inspire the govt to revamp these locations, that’s pretty good.

Tdlr: Her intentions are good, her suggestions are bad
