Kuwait to Saudi and Bahrain by Car – Everything You Need to Know

I’ve been wanting to drive to Bahrain for years now but never actually did because I needed to get a Saudi visa which was a hassle to get a few years ago. Not anymore though which is why I ended up driving to Bahrain for the first time a couple of days back. I had some work to do in Khobar so I decided I’d try driving there. Firstly, just to point out one thing, if you’re Kuwaiti or a GCC citizen the process is obviously much simpler and has always been easy since you don’t require a visa for Saudi or Bahrain. For expats on the other hand, there are a couple of extra steps that we need to take but with the new tourist-friendly Saudi Arabia, the process is super easy.

Here is everything you need to know in case you want to do the same.

Getting a Saudi Visa
So the first step if you’re an expat is getting a Saudi visa. I’ve got the Canadian passport so the process was very easy for me. I just visited the Saudi eVisa website and applied by uploading my photo and filling out a few details in a form. I applied on Saturday at 9:35PM and got my visa approved and issued by 9:38PM. Yeah, it’s super fast. My visa is valid for 1 year with multiple entry and the cost for it was 534.98 SAR including insurance (around 43KD).

Get Cash!
This is very important, before heading on your trip make sure you get Saudi Riyal. All the fuel stations I stopped at in Saudi did not accept our debit or credit cards. They will only accept cash. A friend told me to take cash with me and this was the best tip I got.

Driving to the Kuwait – Saudi Borders
I left my place (Salmiya) around 7:45AM on Monday and headed to the Saudi border down south (Nuwaisib Port). I filled up fuel at the gas station next to my house on the 4th Ring Road and then drove straight down there which took around 1 hour. My recommendation is to fill up gas one more time before the borders since the first fuel station I found after the borders was an hour drive later.

The Kuwaiti – Saudi Borders
When I arrived at the Kuwait border control it was empty with just a couple of other cars that were also heading to Saudi. You’ll find various booths and you just drive up to the one that’s available. He needed my passport, civil ID and car registration. The car is in my name, if the car isn’t in your name you probably need to get a power of attorney (tawkeel) or something (I’m not sure). In any case, there was no issue going through Kuwait border control, but I did have an extra step I needed to take once I got to the Saudi border control.

When I got to the passport control booths at the Saudi side of the border, the guy asked me for my visa so I gave him a printout of my e-visa. He then told me I needed to turn around and head to a building at the corner of the lot so I did. It was a small building that had 4 passport counters. It was just me and a few truckers so it was empty and the truckers looked like they were waiting for someone. They punched some data on the computer, took my photo, scanned my fingerprints, and then stamped my passport and wrote down a code in my passport. That code (I’m guessing my visa number) is what they then used for the rest of the trip when punching my data at the Saudi side of the border control. So I think I need to do this process whenever I get a new visa, so like once a year.

Once I got my passport stamped, I got back into my car and headed to the first booth again. I gave the guy my passport and he let me through. Customs was next (they just look in your car) and then I had to go through the car insurance booth before leaving the borders. You need to insure your car and I ended up paying 128 SAR (10KD) to do so.

Saudi Borders to Khobar
It was a semi-cloudy/gloomy day when I did the drive and it was very chill with just a few cars on the road. The journey from the Saudi borders to Khobar is around 3 hours and it flew by quickly. The highway was mostly new, there was some construction work taking place so I got to strips where the highway suddenly became one lane but it was mostly ok. I didn’t fill up fuel before the borders and the first bunch of fuel stations I did come across in Saudi were all closed and out of business. Around 1-1:30 hours after the border, I spotted a McDonald’s sign in the distance and that was the first fuel station that I came across that was open. My fuel gauge was at the halfway point by then so I filled the car up and paid in cash since they didn’t take cards. There is a good convenience store there, a 24/7 Mcdonald’s and there are bathrooms. So a good point to stop.

The rest of the trip was uneventful and a couple of hours later arrived at Khobar. There are lots of speed cameras on the way and they look different than ours. They’re beige-colored metal boxes on the left of the highway so keep an eye out for them. I got caught by one on my way to the Kuwait border but it still hasn’t shown up on the system. I heard the tickets are expensive so not looking forward to finding out how much I have to pay.

Khobar to Bahrain
I really didn’t have any solid plans just to be clear. I wasn’t sure if after I was done in Khobar I would drive back to Kuwait the same day, or if I’d sleep in Khobar for the night or go to Bahrain. I just got a small bag with a change of clothes with me and figured I’d wing it. Once I was done with my work in Khobar, and after exploring it for a bit I realized I didn’t want to spend the night there. So I decided I’d make my way to Bahrain. I didn’t have a visa since I usually get one on arrival, so wasn’t sure if the process would be the same or not if I drove into Bahrain. It was.

The Saudi – Bahrain Borders
This was a very interesting and impressive experience. So you probably know that Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are connected together by a bridge. It’s similar to our Sheikh Jaber Causway except much shorter. There is a toll booth at the start of the bridge which I paid 25 SAR (2 KD) to get on. Once you get on the bridge you drive for a short distance, maybe like 5 or 10 minutes before arriving to a small island that houses the Saudi and Bahrain border control as well as some tourist attractions. The border control here were super professional and it was very very efficient. Lots of lanes, booths and experienced employees. They get a lot of traffic going through here and they’re set up to process it very quickly.

I got my visa with no issues, didn’t have to leave my car or anything. The cost of the visa was 5BHD (4KD) and I paid for it by card. After that I needed to once again insure my car before crossing into Bahrain, the cost of that was 26BHD (21KD) 2.6BHD (2.1KD). This border experience was super easy and really impressive.

And that was it, the process of going from Khobar to Bahrain took around 20-30 minutes and that included the journey on the bridge and the whole border control experience.

The Drive Back – Bahrain to Kuwait
The next morning I left my hotel at around 7AM for the trip back to Kuwait. There were no issues along the way, it’s the same process as above just backward and I ended up at my office in the City by 12PM. I think Google sent me on a different road back to Kuwait but not really sure. There were also plenty of fuel stations on the way back but I always try and fill up before my fuel tank reaches the half way point.

The only thing worth pointing out happened once I got back to the Kuwait border control. When I got to the passport control booth the guy told me I needed to go to the passport control building instead. So I parked my car and went into the building but when I gave my passport to the guy and he punched my civil ID into the system he’s like why were you sent to me? I just shrugged my shoulder and told him no idea, he stamped my passport and gave it back to me and I was done. I don’t think they get a lot of expats through the Kuwait Saudi border so depending on the employee you get at the time you pass, your experience will vary. I then had to go through customs and the guy went through my car, looking through all my bags, asking me what the cat food I had in a container was, looked in my car compartments, etc.. I think he was either looking for alcohol or drugs or both. The cars ahead of me didn’t go through the same search, maybe I just looked dodgy.

But that was it, I then crossed the borders and was back in Kuwait.

The whole process was super simple and I’m definitely going to drive to Saudi and Bahrain more often. I love driving and this was a pretty chill ride. If you can travel in an SUV that would be optimal but a regular sedan will do just fine as well. One thing I’m not sure of is if women can enter Saudi easily or if guys and girls can be in the same car and not be related or married etc. I’m assuming it’s fine now that Saudi is super chill, but maybe if someone can confirm this in the comments. Also if you have any questions about the trip, let me know!

Correction: I originally stated the car insurance to enter Bahrain was 26BHD when in fact it was 2.6BHD.

Update: Added a snippet in the post regarding the speed cameras in Saudi

no you don’t get the insurance money back because its not a deposit. You need to get the insurance in case you get into an accident so it works like normal insurance you get for your car in Kuwait. I need to double check the duration of the insurance since there were ones valid for different durations. So if I decide to go back again next week I might not have to get new insurance if its still valid.

I have a job offer in Saudi and if i stamp my visa in india and come back to kuwait and drive with my car which is 2006 model will i be allowed with my car to be permanently with me overthere

On online visa, they ask you for stay – name of person, city, and address. I am on transit. What is to be filled?

Hello mark, goodday to you. I took saudi multiple visa for 1year and mentioned mode of transport via air,on july 2023 and stayed for saudi for 12 days. I own a car can i travel through the borders? Is that possible or should i take a new visa again for travelling by land?

Mixed groups of people can go through with no issues even if they aren’t families

Insurance can be weekly or monthly, the 10 KD Kwt/Saudi is for a week
20 KD is quite expensive on the Bahraini border since Saudi cars usually pay 2 KD max

Thanks for this post Mark!
Do we need to get car insurance in Kuwait before heading to Bahrain through Saudi?
Thanks

Hi @Mark, simple question , I can visit Saudia as Pakistani national on my personal car with my family to explorer or tourism.

You sure about that because I heard that expats cannot go to Ummrah on their personal car , thet can only go with tourism agents as a group van or buses.

because I love to explorer and long drive outside Kuwait.

secondly If you can refer any source or link where I can clarify and plan my trip accordingly.
as my nationality is not on E Visa list so what will be the process ?

that’s great news for me … thank a lot for this lovely post.

regards Bro

Thanks Mark.

I was looking for this information for long time.

As an expat- asian , tried to obtain Saudi transit visa through embasy , but they directed me to private travel agent. 1sr travel agent said they cant issue visa for us and second travel agent has asked to show bank balance of KD 15,000/- for each person who is traveling.

I hope in the coming days the transit visa process will be normalized for all nationalities.

By the way excellent trip report as usual mark. Many Thanks

Hey, I just read Fahed’s comment and he mentions the same thing, if you aren’t one of the 49 countries which the e-visa applies to then the process of getting a visa is still difficult.

Hi
I am African and applied Saoudi e visa 3years ago, they said the same
But finally on May 2023
They accepted my Saoudi Visa, I have just applied it online, one friend gave me website to do it

Hi Guys…I am an Indian Expat and have received the Saudi Visit Visa, first in 2019 and again now last month, this year. I have already travelled multiple times via road and the process is the same as Mark mentioned in a very elaborate way in his post, hats off to him.

Only thing which is missing is that the E-visa is only available for 49 countries, others need to apply from the Tasheer (visa) office in Salam Mall, Salmiyah.

You need to fill your details and take an appointment via their website –
https://vsc.tasheer.com/kuwait/en

The minimum Documents required are:
Passport
Photo (white background)
HR Letter
Atamat Taukiya
6 months Bank Statement
If spouse is applying along, then marriage certificate (attested)

Other important things for approval (as mentioned and tested)
1,250 KWD Salary
15,000 KWD bank balance
US and UK Visa (valid) helps in the case

The salary and bank statement both are required, not one of them.

While applying, make sure you ask the person filling your form to leave the mode of transport as open, if he selects by Air then you wont be able to use the land border.

It takes maximum 48 hours (2 working days) to get your passport back with the visa (or rejection, if conditions are not met). You get 1 year multiple entry.

However there is another way to apply if you cannot fulfill their salary or bank statement requirement, that is apply for Family Visit Visa in which you need to provide an affidavit proving that you have relatives in Saudi Arabia. The process remains same, however you don’t need to fulfill the money requirements.

All the best!!!

There is a third and easy way for people who are able to get an invitation letter from Saudi based company…my friend just got his 1 year visa stamped yesterday, he had an invitation from a company in Saudi.. so you might as well try that…

At Airports correct, pre Covid… did you try recently? and on land borders its not applicable..

Hello Fahad,
Thanks for the detailed process for KSA (for indian national). Can you provide the visa requirements for Bahrain for the same case, if you know? Thank you.

Hello Fahad
Many thanks for your detailed information. I have two questions if you can help
1. Will Tasheer fill our VISA application ( because I couldn’t see application in the website)
2. Is tour Itenaray mandatary for applying Tourism VISA.

Hello Bala,

You have to fill the basic application to get the visa appointment to submit your documents.
a dummy ticket and hotel booking are kind of mandatory.

Hi Fahed,

Can you elaborate more on the process of getting the affidavit done – from where, content to be written, any attestation requirement and proof to prove relationship. Can we get this done without any requirement from relatives in KSA

Had checked in the Tasheer website, if you apply for family visit visa you require a pre approved visa from KSA and relationship certificate from the host country.

Can you please clarify the above points.

Thanks

Assalamualaikum Fahad.

Went thru your and Mark’s story and was really thrilled to know we as expatriates can travel by road to saudi arabia. First of all, thank you all for the wonderful replies on time.
My only doubt is regarding the Affidavit. From where to get and what is the contents in the affidavit. It would be of much help if you can share ASAP.

Regards
Syed

Hello Fahad,
It is written in the Tasheer website, that the HR letter is to be attested from chamber of commerce and ministry foreign affairs Foreign affairs.
Had you have to do that as well?

Hi Fahed, If we have valid US visitor Visa, then we can get multiple entry Visa On Arrival regardless of nationality?

Hi, how about crossing the border? Is there any inspection what to bring, How about some stuffs? Like canned food? Did they allow it?

I love driving. I did many time this since 2012. Last time 2 weeks ago. Every year except 2020-2021. Three times even I went down until Doha, Qatar. Visa was always doable, but before I had to ask the Saudi Embassy for it, now it’s online just few clicks and valid for a year. Before the border crossing was little bit chaotic (stamp here and there, every time photo and fingerprint, and so on) but now it is smooth. I’m from Hungary, by the way but living here since 2006. I advise to anybody to try it, good experience.

Hi! It’s clearly not easy for many to show 15K bank balance, so we’ll need to opt for the ‘relatives option’.

Is a cousin living in Saudi sufficient or should it be a sibling / parent?

Tx!

I usually go to Jubail industrial city every week, I was surprised when you mentioned fuel stations dont accept any cards, they actually do accept credit cards, I never carried cash with me.

all fuel stations in saudi have مدى card machines which accepts any credit card.

Are you using a Saudi card? kuwait debit or credit cards don’t work at the gas station. I tried, the guy at the pump told me as well it wouldn’t work and my friend who travels every week also said the same. Their mada machines only accept Mada cards

No im using my KFH visa credit card with all the gas stations, I wish if there a way to upload an image, I would’ve show you my card statement.

One of the last transactions on my card was a station called ‘kps 43 jubail’

There are 2 ways to travel from Kuwait to Bahrain, one is highway 5 which is straight till Khobar and the bridge, other is the one highway 613 which has KPS 43 (which is Al Khonaini Gas Station number 43) and ends at a point and you have to join highway 5 towards Khafji or highway 80 towards Khobar and goes though Jubail Industrial Area.. much better then highway 5…

I just did a road trip to Saudi, and their gas stations do accepts credit card as well as Apple Pay. I was able to pay with a CBK credit card at the Gas Station with the McDonalds on the way.

Strange that it worked for you and not any of us at work. A friend actually just went during Eid and had only 2 points he highlighted on instagram, the first being that places still required masks and the second being that none of the gas stations he went to accepted his Kuwaiti cards.

Any plan to have road trip by one of your old cars. maybe an article about it will be nice. (How to prepare the car for long distance trip).

hmmm don’t think so. I might once I get my FJ40 but max speed on that is like 100km. Which reminds me need to add a snippet regarding speeding cameras to the post.

Iraq also will be having same procedure ?
If any expact (non arab) wants to travel to Iraq for a day or two. is it allowed to travel by road if you have your own car ?
I tried to google as well but no proper result.

We did the same trip during the National Day holidays – just as straightforward!

Only additional issue we had was when leaving Bahrain, we were told our car insurance was no longer valid, as we had left the country – and we had to pay for it again.

A very easy road trip!!

What about a EU passport? I have Bulgarian citizenship. Would that by any chance help bypass the 15000 bank sum? Any ideas?

Can you suggest some interesting things to do in the Eastern province of Saudi – near Aramco or thereabouts as that region is nearest Kuwait.
Am not sure if road trip to Al Ula from Kuwait is tenable or not.

As a child we would drive from Kuwait to Jordan and we needed special paperwork for our car, KT. Is that still required? It’s exciting that things are changing finally

I thought I needed some special paperwork for my car but turns out for GCC countries you don’t. Not sure if you still need it for Jordan though.

I’m an Asian running a small business here in kuwait. Been wondering whats the procedure to drive my car to dubai through Saudi.
The issue is the car is registered on the company and not my personal name. Since expats can’t own pickups.

I’d like some insight. I could get a business invite letter from Saudi to help with the visa process. Mark id appreciate the insight since I’m sure you’ve researched almost every possible route.

So would the same apply if we travelled to UAE through Saudi?
Any difference in the process and visa requirements?

Would be great if someone could give me details about what the Saudi UAE border crossing process.

I did the UAE trip in Feb 2020, Abu Dhabi issues on arrival visa to Indians with US visa. You could apply online for other nationals..

Hello Fahad,
have you ever drove to Jordan? is there any requirement of CPD (Carnet) ? if you know of? please share .. Thank you

Hi Fahad I too am an Indian and have a US visa. Will I get a UAE visa at Abu Dhabi (road border)and would like to make a road trip to UAE. Please confirm. Thanks

Hey Mark .. I made that trip hundreds of times and as an expat best advice I can give your expat readers is to remain flexible at the Kuwait – Saudi border. Every once in a while you’ll get to a booth where the guy doesn’t seem like he’s interested in working and make you go inside to the office for no reason … or perhaps he doesn’t know what to do in the first place LOL

Also, how come your leave a comment box is at the very bottom of the page past all the comments? It would save me like 3 seconds of my day if I didn’t have to scroll to the bottom 😉

Dear Mark and Brother RBG, thank you for the detailed info. I am thinking about taking the same route this summer. But based on the total cost of this road trip, it doesn’t seem to me a good idea unless I plan to cross the Saudi border at least 3-4 times a year. In my case, it will most likely be a one-time thing. Now, according to the cost list below, it would be better to just take a flight to Bahrain. Considering the Kuwait Airways roundtrip ticket cost being (Aug 4, 2024) around 70 KD, why should I still choose the road trip over a flight?

Saudi visa + health ins – 43 KD
Saudi car insurance – 10 KD
Tolls – 2 KD
Bahrain visa – 4 KD
Bahrain car insurance – 2 KD
Fuel cost ~ 10 KD

TOTAL: ~71 KD

I like to drive, but I hate boring roads. By saying “boring” I mean roads that have no restaurants & cafes on the side. I love having short breaks on the road and have chai. Or take a short nap under a huge tree. Based on your experience, are these things available on the route? Cause, if it is just a long boring road, I would rather take the flight.

Pls let me know if I am missing anything. Since a lot of people like to drive from KW to Bahrain, first I thought it is probably cheaper. But it actually ended up being more expensive. So, I need to clarify why someone would prefer a road trip over a flight.

In my case, I am thinking of going alone, but maybe it will make more sense if I go with family or friends.

Do I still have to pay 43 KD, if I am just going for a week, and will not cross the border for the rest of the year?

And lastly, what is the best time to visit Bahrain?

Thanks in advance,
Max A.

Can I travel to Saudi by someone else’s car through power of attorney with a Kuwait visit visa? Or is it allowed only for Kuwait citizens with a valid civil ID?

If you get power of attorney should be fine. When I send my car to bahrain via car carrier I give the drive power of attorney so they let him take my car out of kuwait.

Hey mark how u doing I just want to know how much did u paid for your car carrier to Bahrain how much it cost u ? Is it suv or Sadan thanks

U said When I send my car to bahrain via car carrier I give the drive power of attorney so they let him take my car out of kuwait.

Hi Mark,

Do you have the contact no of the car carrier by any chance ?

Also do you happen to know of any cars/companies that run private taxi from Kuwait to Bahrain and cost ?

Hello Mark,
Just few questions if u can help We are having Indian passport and Drivers Civil id
1) Is it possible to go to different cities if we are on umraah visa
2) And if yes can we go by road to other cities in Saudi
3) And how to apply directly for Umraah Visa
Thank You in Advance

Theres a fuel station in Saudi 5 min from the border & its cheaper then Kuwait. Ive driven that route many times.

Not entirely sure what that number they jotted down in your passport was, but I doubt it was the visa number. I’m Kuwaiti and also get that number jotted down on the very last page, but my last land border crossing was around 5 years ago so they might have changed the process.

My guess was always just a random number to translate our Civil ID to something readable to KSA; then again, it’s only a guess.

Has anyone traveled this route on a Motorcycle or does anyone have any knowledge what rules apply if any difference vs traveling by car?

Also I’m eager to know if it is allowed to travel on Motorcycle cross the bridge to Bahrain?
Iv heard rumor its not allowed? … anyone experienced such trip?

Could I possibly travel by car or motorcycle if I am still down paying loan of it?

—— thanks to Mark for grate article ——

Cheers!

I did a trip on a motorcycle to Bahrain in Dec 2019 when it was a special case.. after Jan 2020 the bridge is now accepting motorcycles..its the same procedure as traveling by car, only insurance is cheaper..

Do you need to do any preregistration on Muqeem website when you have Evisa or do they ask for any vaccination certificates/ apps to be downloaded before entering the Nuwaiseeb/khafji border ?

No issue to enter via Khafji and exit at Bahrain border ?

Thanks

Thanks Mark

Did you have to do any preregistration on muqeem website or download the tawakalna app ?

Want to give it a try I used to go from ksa to Kuwait as I was resident in ksa before so no issue but now I am resident in Kuwait and could not go back so would be interested to go back to ksa to visit but from Kuwait to ksa as a tourist.

Very informative post 👍🏼

tawaqalna is needed inside saudi to enter places etc thats it.

Muqeem registeration before traveling is needed but they dont check it at the land boarders but kuwait airport they get annoying and ask for it most of the time

When you land at riyadh for example they dont ask anything but soemtimes in jeddah airport they ask for the muqeem registration

A most awaited post!
However least privileged national (Indian) having to go through those additional unreasonable process – 15K bank balance, HR letter, Salary certificate etc.. 😐

I’m asian and I have a business visit visa to saudi for a year and I travel by car to saudi many times not a issue at all and residency in kuwait.

Would I be eligible for bahrain visa on the boarder or should I take it from the embassy?

Any one with a similar experience let me know thanks

Latest update on Visa on arrival to Saudi “We are pleased to advising you that following Passengers are allowed to board: Passengers with nationalities in Group (B) Countries who hold valid Schengen, US or UK (tourist or business) types visas to obtain visit visa for the propose of tourism upon their arrival at the Kingdom Airports via self-service machines or through Passport Offices, provided that their visa has been used once at least. National Air carriers are responsible to verify the information on the said visas”

For more information, please visit https://www.visitsaudi.com/en/about-e-visa

just read on the Saudi visit site, they have resumed the visa on arrival for holders of US visa holders. Only condition is that you should used it once and need to travel on Saudi national carriers. My query to everyone if anyone used this visa to enter via land border.
Thanks in advance.

How are the roads? I know you said an SUV woud be optimal but do you think it’s doable in a sports car? I’ve driven my corvette all over Kuwait (chalet, shitty roads, construction areas) and I would love to do a roadtrip with it but not sure what the journey would be like.

I am an Indian Dentist working in Kuwait. I wanted to know if i should attain a Qatar or UAE visa first and then apply for Saudi Transit Visa to travel through by road.

We are applying for e-visa rn. The application requires us to write Saudi address at some point and it’s mandatory to fill it in. We won’t be staying in Saudi, it’s just a transfer to Bahrain. What shall we write? Please help 🌷.

I’ve taken a trip to Khobar and back for a day once I got my visa stamped last month
My second trip was from 24th March till 02nd April from Kuwait – UAE and back

Hey mark,

Could you clarify what the internet situation is like? Do we need a local card or roaming works fine?

Hello Mark,
We were planning to travel to Bahrain by road through Saudi as mentioned in your post,Is it still allowed as we are travelling with a baby and wanted to confirm ?FYI we are Indian Nationals and also can we validate if the routes are opend from anywhere?

I wanted to drop a quick note thanking you for this comprehensive step-by-step write-up. I printed it out and had it sitting on top of our packet of documents as our family of four (2 adults, 2 teenaged daughters) made the drive to Bahrain a few weeks ago. This was our first roadtrip since moving to Kuwait this past year and we were eager to get on the move after getting car/license/etc. all figured out. We were so pleased that we had no issues and it went quite easily. We had a great time – thanks again for the tips!

What is the procedure for a road trip from Kuwait to Bahrain by road for a family (2 adults, 2 kids )14 & 5 years old .How much is the total expense per head to Bahrain (2 way)

Thanks so much for all the info! We did the drive last weekend! The quality of the roads was terrible! Especially in the far right truck lane. We didn’t have to pay a visa fee for Bahrain and they didn’t stamp our passport (only stamped in and out of Saudi). There was no cellphone service from Kuwait border to McDonalds stop in Saudi. Make sure you keep all the little receipts they give you nearby. The border control between Saudi and Bahrain was the worst part as we were sitting in stand still traffic for a very long time. Glad I had the experience driving to Bahrain but I’m not sure I would do it again.

how terrible were they? can you be more specific on when the roads get bad? im driving my sports car to dubai and im afraid i’ll damage it

How low is your car? I don’t think my Lotus could make it out of the Saudi borders, they have speed bumps so high and steep I think my lotus would just hit them on the side

Hi Mark, would you or anyone else know if i have an approved Evisa of kuwait from their online website, can i travel from saudi to kuwait (through land border – khafji), do they accept evisa into kuwait by land borders also ?, the information on evisa website does not give details if land border or by air only.

Hi Mark. I am a Kuwaiti driving to Bahrain with my 10 year old triplets and thinking of taking my Pilipino nanny with me. I got her a Saudi visa for a year. But, cant find any information regarding the Bahrain visa at the land boarder. Pleas if you can be so kind as to assist me on the information in regards to that. Thank you.

Im planning on doing a Kuwait-Doha drive in November for the 2022 World Cup! Anyone else here reading this with similar plans?

I’m going to watch England’s 3 group games at the World Cup in Qatar and I’m going to drive there. I’m confident of getting into Saudi because last month I drove from Kuwait to Jordan for 1 week holiday. I have UK passport and am working in Kuwait. I got a visa on arrival in Saudi and in Jordan. No special paperwork for my car. Had to buy car insurance at each border though but not too expensive. The first time at Saudi border they were surprised to see a foreigner with no visa and they made loads of phone calls to eventually figure out that visa on arrival is allowed. They were very nice about everything and I felt they wanted me to get in. Sat me and my son in their office and gave us coffee and dates and process took 2 and a half hours. On the way back only took 1 hour at Saudi border. Jordan was really a great place. If you go there for a few days then buy a “Jordan Pass” which gets you into the historic sites much cheaper.
I’m going to look into what’s needed to cross into Qatar.

I’m still contemplating whether to drive to Qatar for the games. As per the rules, those entering Qatar by road should park their vehicles at the Abu samra border (on the Saudi side) then proceed to take the free shuttle service into central doha.

I’m trying to find out of there’s going to be proper parking facilities at the border. I’ll.post here if I get to know anything.

Hello AD,
Would like to know the drive experience to Jordan. I see on the map its around 15 hrs drive. Could you give a detailed info about the fuel stations, restaurants, road condition etc? Did you drive in single stretch or took breaks in a hotel or some place? appreciate if you can let me know about this here or in a mail [email protected]
Thank you!

Hi Bob,
I drove there with my son and we took turns to drive so I was able to sleep on the back seat (FJ Cruiser) while he drove and vice versa. There were loads of petrol stations but my car has a 160 liters fuel tank so I didn’t need to stop much. The roads were dual carriageway the whole way and in good condition. We set the cruise control at 130 most of the way and rarely needed to slow down. I brought a cooler box with sandwiches and snacks so we didn’t stop at any restaurants on the way. Drove in a single stretch from Kuwait to Amman. On the way back we drove single stretch again, this time from Petra to Kuwait. But we had considered staying one night at the halfway point in Saudi called Arar but decided not to since the journey out had been so easy. Jordan was great. Beautiful ancient ruins with fascinating history.

Wanted to confirm with you that, you can drive Kuwait registered vehicle in Jordan without the need of Carnet papers, correct?

I just showed up at the Jordan border. I had to buy car insurance at the border. My car is registered in Kuwait, in my name and has Kuwaiti number plate. Process was quite smooth.

Thanks for your note AD! Since I was confused about this due to mixed inputs from a few travelers whether or not, I didn’t want to take risk of being denied and thus obtained a Carnet Pass.

Hi Mark,

Did you apply for a tourist e-visa or a transit visa?? Does the tourist visa allow you to transit through KSE to Bahrain with no issues?? Or do you need to have hotel bookings and so on??

Hi Mark,

I am an Indian expat working in Kuwait and got an eVisa to visit Saudi, can I go Saudi by road thru nuwaiseeb border?

I checked with the concerned and came to know as per them that land border crossing is permitted. Now I will be applying for e-visa

Hey Mark, very detailed review, thanks a lot. My wife and I got the e-visa too. Will be travelling this Thursday at 2 pm. first to Saudi and on to Bahrain. Praying all goes as well as you mentioned.

Hey Mark in Bahrain today. Wonderful experience and the Saudi custom and immigration was supper smooth. A lot of rush and traffic due to the weekend. But all worth it at the end.

I’m in Bahrain too, left kuwait early and it was empty. Saudi bahrain border had a few cars but not busy at all either. That was Thursday morning though.

Hi Mark, we’re back in Bahrain on Wednesday for the weekend holidays. The Saudi roads have improved tremendously. We entered Saudi at 6am. They did not charge anyone the car insurance. I’m guessing will have to pay on the way back. Got Bahrain visa on arrival valid for 6 months.

Hey, just to clarify insurance, they don’t charge u, u have to drive up to the insurance counter, request it and then pay it. Let me know how traffic is at the border on the way back!

Me and All the vehicles pulled up to the Saudi insurance booth and the guy just said to go. I usually pay cash at this booth. But this time he let us all just go. I’m guessing will have to pay on the way back.

Lovely!
Please share your experiences.

One more question: is it possible to drive into KSA / Bahrain with a car that is still on bank loan?

Hi.. great post.. with great detail. We are US citizen planning a road trip this winter to Saudi, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman. 3 of us have Kuwait Civil ID whereas my eldest daughter don’t.. I am curious if she would be able to come back through the land border with a Kuwaiti e-visa through the Saudi-Kuwait border.. any info on that is highly appreciated.. thanks

Hi Ashok,
In July this year I drove from Kuwait to Jordan with my son who has a US passport. He flew from the US into Kuwait and used an e-visa. When we were in Jordan he applied for a fresh e-visa for Kuwait and then when we came back to Kuwait across the land border it was no problem.

Me and My wife got KSA visa. Multiple Entry for 1 year ( As usual now a days ).
All things are almost clear from Mark’s post.
Question is – Can my wife drive my SUV which is on my name in KSA. Ofcouse she is holding valid license in Kuwait since 10 years.

She will be all the time with me, means I guess no restriction if she drives or I drive. Right ?

Also I understand blow docs will be required — just to make it a checklist ( for Kuwait to KSA )

1. All Traveler’s KSA E-Visa ( Printed )
2. All Traveler’s Passports ( Original )
3. All Traveler’s Kuwait Mobile ID
4. Vehicle registration (daftar) ( If it is on your own name – else you also Power of Attorney from Owner )
5. Kuwait Driving License ( Original ) for those who wants to Drive
6. Minimum Cash in case you want to pay in SAR ( 132 SAR for Car Insurance )
7. Additional SAR based on your Food / Living / Fuel / Fun … activities
8. Kuwait Credit / Debit Card if you dont want to carry SAR

yes depends on what vehicle you are driving.. i filled up my fuel tank on the last fuel station here in nuwasheeb… i reached bahrain in half tank.. i drove chevy Tahoe… also fuel prices in saudi are expensive…

hi bha.. you can check my youtube page planetgoa.. i also travelled first week of november.. i also mentioned everything as per your queries.. and yes thanks to MARK the trip was possible

Can we take a vehicle from Kuwait to KSA if it’s under installments? On the car registration booklet it mentions Matloob.

Me too.. it’s under my name but mentions Required Installments. Will I be able to take my car across to Saudi?

Hi all!

Had the same query but couldn’t find the right answer. So, took the risk last Friday and Alhamdulillah made it across the border. Currently in Jeddah. 😃

In short – as long as the car is in ur name, it’s ok if it is under instalments!

Enjoy the drive! 👍🏽

Hi All,
Sorry for reposting this — just to reconfirm since I am planning for Alula road trip with family.

Above is valid for non Kuwaitis ( expats staying in Kuwait )

Hey Overlanders, thought of adding my experience here for the benefit of all, if anyone would want to know.
I did a solo Bahrain trip on Nov 25th, spent 2 days, and returned. it was rush time due to the world cup since many were going to Qatar. Then with my family, we drove to Bahrain and spent 2 days, and then to Doha where we spent another 2 days, this was on Dec 29th (last week). the return drive was a single stretch but we enjoyed it.

Being Indian, I had to spend (waste) 3-4 hours at the Qatar border for visa. They first refused saying my designation mentioned on the civil Id is not in the approved list, and asked to go back. After going and meeting several officers finally we were allowed. By the time the day is gone. If you are having ‘those’ passports like mine, you need to check your designation on your civil id and the approved list which is available on their website. But I also noticed no body has returned during my time I spent in that office, they allow everyone after so much of trouble, but its not a guarantee you would be permitted to enter, either.

I would say, the immigration officer who processes the entry should make his own judgment instead of blindly checking the list. The list is for guidance. Reason, we as a family spent 2 nights in Doha in a hotel, and purchased gifts and souvenirs close to 2500 QAR. Is that not what any country would want? we witnessed very few people as tourists in that country during the time we moved around, there was no crowd in Lusail, only a handful of people traveling the metro, and empty spaces.
It’s just my feedback.

I’ve done the drive before and everything was fine except the wait times at the borders… took hours! I’m wondering if you leave at a really random time and aim to be at the borders at like 2am will it make a difference in wait times?

Hi,

The car is in my fathers name. If he gives me a tawkeel to take it to saudi. Will that be fine?

If so could you please advise the process?

Thank you

I want to go to Bahrain on a road trip from Kuwait with my friends, but prior to that, I would like to know if a mixed friend group (girls and boys) ) can go in one car. I heard that they separate them in Saudi? i’m not sure how true it is.

I just heard from my mutual friends that they were separated though … in Saudi, girls were separated from the boys. Its a bit scary.

Hi, I wanna do a road trip with my friends too – but a friend says a woman needs her mahram to enter Saudi – and that they check relationship status at the borders.
Will I be allowed to enter KSA with my group of friends which includes men?

That’s not true, they don’t care if you’re married, single or with a bunch of guys. You can even stay together in a room as an unmarried couple.

In Sha Allah, I am planning to drive from Kuwait to Al-Khobar on 27-Sep-23 for 3 days. My one year Saudi e-visa is expiring on 10-Oct-23. I have a doubt if Saudi authorities will refuse entry due to my Saudi visa expiring in 12 days from my entry date.

My wife is having Mobile ID only. Her physical civil ID is the old ID which is showing expiry date as June 2023. Last month, we went to Saudi by flight and the boarding staff refused to check-in due to expired physical civil ID. She informed Mobile ID is not accepted in Saudi. I had to talk to their Manager and after assuring him that I will take risk, they allowed us to board the flight. But we did not have any issues in Dammam airport Immigration. Now, I am planning for a road trip and I fear that Kuwait/Saudi Immigration in the border might refuse entry due to expired physical civil ID. Can anyone advise

I am using SUPER fuel for my car. What is the equivalent fuel in Saudi for Kuwait SUPER fuel

Hi Mark

I have a job offer in Riyadh i work in kuwait, and have a open residence visa 18 in kuwait, I have a car and want to drive by car and transfer my car registration in Saudi, what will be the process please please reply

Hey Mark,
Thanks for the detailed post. I have a question about the speeding tickets though, whether kuwaiti/non Saudi plates can get speeding tickets in saudi or not. Ive heard mixed opinions, but did you get the fine at the border or back in Kuwait?

Hello I Just have one question
Can I enter Saudi Arabia with a car with an installment but the registration is on my name?

Hello Mark, You mentioned that you have a canadian passport, I’m just wondering why you still applied for your visa, if you can just have a visa on arrival?

Hi Mark, I have a Saudi visa valid until Oct 2024. I will be renewing my passport this month. Will the existing Saudi visa be valid for travel on the new passport or do I have to apply for a new Saudi Visa ? Thank you
