A note to all Americans: The word herbs is pronounced “herbs” because it has a f*cking ‘H’ at the beginning!

Okay, another food word that confuses me is Parmesan. I pronounce it (pahr-muh-zahn), however a friend of mine tells me its pronounced
(pahr-muh-jean), as in the name “Jean” in french. So whats the correct pronunciation?

Zinger – extension of the word ‘Zing’, so it is pronounced with a ‘g’ sound. (Like ringer, singer, etc.)

Parmesan is the english way of saying
Parmigiano-Reggiano (parmijjano-rejjano)
named according to the regions it’s cultivated in, parma, regiano emilio and some others.
so pronounce it however you like, parmesan is the branding used by producers of parmigiano-reggiano-like cheeses – remember those green kraft plastic tubes of parmesan? that was once our only choice in kuwait. wikipedia confirms my thoughts – yes, just read up on it there for the info.
it erks me when i hear “marshcapone” instead of mascarpone and “brusheta” instead of bruschetta (brusketta). i think people say brusheta because they’ve heard brochette before, but that’s something completely different.
another one i thought was interesting was fillet. i’ve always heard it pronounced “filay” but someone told me a while ago that it should be pronounced as you’d read it in english, with a hard t sound at the end. wikipedia wasn’t any help on this one and i’m too tired to look any further, but they told me that it came from a german word and then adopted by the french who pronounced it the way they do. so i’m not sure.
sorry for the rant.

They also forgot to mention Salmon which is completely butchered in the middle east and should be pronounced as SaMon by dropping the L.

I was amazed that I wasn’t pronouncing words correctly in English too! My husband is British and rolls his eyes every time I butcher an English word…
