Alshaya: Vision and Values

Found this Alshaya corporate video on YouTube. It’s not all interesting to watch but the parts I liked were the behind the scenes look at some of their businesses. They’ve got one huge ass warehouse! [YouTube]

Al Shaya ( and all other trader families for that matter ) have only one vision, them controlling the Kuwaiti economy and snuffing out anyone else from taking a part from their perceived god given profits.

The top 10% of the US population own 71% of the wealth, this is a worldwide thing. You need money to make money.

yes but i like to hold my country at a higher standard than the US unlike nmany ppl here. Ok mr capitalist, go get some money and try to establish a business that is in direct competition to the big trading families in Q8, guess what they will run u out of business (and not by buying u out either). And you really should know the difference between big corporations who are held accountable by shareholders and employ based on MERIT than the mafia trading families in Kuwait who employ only their family members regardless of merit focusing primarily on blood relations.

He’s not one of the most successful businesses in the world, but in the GCC. His original concept was simple. He brought the Hi-street to the GCC. London has always been a second home to people in the GCC and GCC women craves their summers in the UK where they filled suitcases full of the newest fashions from London. I think he started with the basic stores then proceeded with opening the first department store, Debanhams. Now, I am going to assume it is his children now, have branched out to restaurant business – fast food chains from the States that have integrated well with the existing food court chains. Their young, different and bring some quality to the fast food market ie: Shake Shack. Yes, he used his experience to get these franchises because Shake Shack never allowed franchises, let alone out of NYC, to the GCC and the response has been positive. Restaurants was a smart move as we experience an economic global downturn and his massive warehouses are full of unsold inventory. But what Kuwaiti companies fail to understand is goodwill and their obligation to community. He may have to consider some philanthropy down the road and understand business from a customer’s point of view.

Just regarding your last point. Most philanthropist activities in Kuwait are done anonymously, so we can never say for certain whether or not Alshaya participates in such activities. However, you have a point if you are referring to community involvement and sponsorships similar to what is being done by major international corporations (Which is usually just another PR scheme).

Actually businesses in the GCC really benefitted from the 1000KD grant in February and then the later Saudi grant. I bet most GCC retail companies don’t have inventory problems because all of it was cleared out earlier in the year. Also during this downturn China is making more money than ever and the high price of oil means the GCC governments are still doing ok. It’s not as “global” as people think.

One thing to point out, none of the younger generation work in Al Shaya’a, they have their own businesses or jobs in other companies currently Al Shaya’a is completely run by one person including all the new concepts!

The employees of Alshaya companies are treated as slaves literally. Most of them are paid peanuts and made to work like donkeys.

I think that is why Kuwait remains on the third tier of the US State Departments report on Human Rights. I understand even American companies in Kuwait are running slavery camps and denying their employees rights under the Kuwait labor law system. But we read that the government does try to implement employee rights protection, but yet companies insist on going around the law threatening employees if they complain.

They are not working like slaves but they are trying to do their best at satisfying their customers that obviously nothing impresses them!

he needs to teach his nephews a few things about business- they are handing over vast sums of money to a con artist outfit from new Zealand who are pretending to ‘improve’ his schools- ie photocopying a lot from the internet ……and giving handouts.

Wow such jealousy . so if you have been in Business for 125 year or more and you are growing , you need to stop , and think ” Mmmm should I limit my growth and curb my success and not expand my business so that i don’t offend those who find success offensive ” you know what they call people who hate success …. PLAYA HATAS ” .

P.S Any other Families out there that need Hating?
