Arabian mega skyscrapers

Darth Tower

oobject has a top 20 list of skyscrapers in the Gulf, nearly all of them are in Dubai but Kuwait’s upcoming Mubarek Tower made the list. My favorite is the Ras Al Khaimah Convention Center (Dubai UAE) pictured above which is designed by OMA and led by Rem Koolhaas. Its made to look like the Death Star from Star Wars. [Link]

‘My friend here is trying to convince me that any independent contractors working on the uncompleted Death Star were innocent victims when it was destroyed by the Rebels.’

I live clerks..

ras il khaima is not in dubai,it’s a totally different emirate…i know this has nothing to do with the post but just wanted to point that out..thanks

umm.. i’m not 100% sure but that looks like an old exhibition building was built by some famous architect couple decades ago but it caught fire one night and went down.

Most of these designs are just conceptual and will never be built or will probably have similar shapes. As an architect and a structural engineer ,the one building I like is the new Central Bank of Kuwait in Kuwait city next to Seif Palace. CBK is the only project in Kuwait that is really called Architecture because when you look at the building you understand what it is a “fortress” with something very important inside. People today are so obsessed by curves and twists that they really forget what building should be. Few years later, people will look at those building and say “That style was so yesterday” because it is a “Style” not “Architectural Form”. For example, if you look at the Sears Tower in Chicago it will impress you every time because it is an architectural form that had a concept behind it. Thats my opinion.

And you call ur self architect? apparently you’ve missed some classes. lol.
look at most of the old buildings we have in kuwait, weather government buildings or comercial. They dont represent “style”… WE call them old style. But if you try to think about every curve and ever wall, window, and piece of concrete hanging in the middle of nowhere you’d realize that those engineers of the 70s and 80s who worked in kuwait were really smart. they were playing with light and shadows in such amazing ways.

while buildings nowadays… concrete cubes with giant glass windows sucking up on electricity to keep those places cool during summer.

Don’t talk about things you don’t understand please. Every building have specific Style. Those cubic or curved form have names in architecture they are not just curves and cubes. Get back to me when you know what they are called.

By the way, there is no such thing called “old style” in architecture. Most of the buildings in Dubai, and in Kuwait, follow the Postmodern Architecture. I personally don’t like to see this style of architecture in our region because it does not reflect our culture. I believe buildings should reflect people, location, and history. Unfortunately, most architect in the middle east (with few exceptions) lack the understanding of Islamic Architecture due to poor education. A good example of Islamic Architecture is Burj Dubai (Designed by SOM). In Burj Dubai, you will see that the form is derived from a specific type of flower that grows in the UAE and when it is done you will see that the details are derived from Islamic Architecture. I believe our region is full of culture and we should maintain it through expressions in our architecture not by copying other people ideas.
