Better garbage bins needed

Just read an interesting post on the K’S PATH blog in which they’re recommending closed garbage bins (basically with lids) similar to the ones pictured above over the current open ones in helping to prevent strays.

I think that’s actually a pretty good idea and doesn’t require much work from the municipality other than some financial investment to purchase the new bins. Not only will it help prevent stray dogs and cats from munching and living off the garbage but it would also hide the garbage from plain sight and also reduce the foul smell. [Link]

This article certainly has the potential to be misunderstood, so I certainly understand your comment Burhan.

Controlling the disposal of our waste is only one important part of finding lasting solutions for stray animal population management. A waste management strategy should be implemented in conjunction with humane animal control programs (which K’S PATH is running, and we’re about to expand greatly in that field) so that animals do not suffer in the process. However, we cannot say that we must leave garbage every where in order to feed the street animals.

This article is only intended to suggest that garbage is part of cause of overpopulation. It is not the only cause and depriving all the stray animals in Kuwait of food is certainly not the solution.

The above article aims with regard to the current open Steel bins. In some of the areas, Plastic Closed Lid Bins with wheels are available. Even these bins are not being efficiently used as people do not close the lids or the bins are overflowing with garbage. I think this problem also needs to be addressed (about human inefficiency or responsibility).

I dont think its so bad that stray cats eat out of the garbage. Better animals eat than it all goes to waste.

People would be too lazy to lift open the garbage lids and would dump their trash on top of the bins. Once the lid of the garbage gets dirty, people won’t touch it. And knowing how people are over here….

That’s exactly what I thought at the beginning. But then I thought a little bit more and figured out that the garbage bins are closed in nature and require you to place it in a small(compared to actual size of garbage) hole.

All that food that goes into waste bins could make wonderful compost via recycling and sorting of rubbish
