Junkyard Dogs

I passed by the junkyards earlier today to take some pictures and while I was there I noticed there were a ton of dogs. It’s not the first time I spot wild dogs at the junkyards but today I counted over 60 roaming around either alone or in packs. I started stalking a few and found them interesting to watch so I decided take pictures of many of them as I could so I could share on the blog

It wasn’t easy finding all the dogs and I’m positive I missed a lot since the whole area is full of streets and alleyways and unless I was planning to spend the whole day there I couldn’t go through each and everyone of them. I also only took pictures of the dogs that were on the streets but there must be a lot more in the actual junkyards or hiding in the cracks and crevices of old abandoned containers and cars.

I spent 2 hours driving around the junkyards looking for dogs and none of the ones I spotted seemed aggressive. Some looked sad and depressed while others seemed happy roaming around. One thing I noticed is the fact that none of the people in the area were afraid of the dogs. I spoke to a bunch of workers and from what they told me the dogs live and survive on their own without any help from humans. The workers in the area don’t feed or take care of the dogs but they also don’t mind them and none are afraid of them. It’s really sad but so interesting at the same time. Check out some pictures below.

it’s not 1 junkyard, its over 50 junkyards next to each other. I don’t know the exact address, if you head on the 6th ring road past agility keep driving. I think its the 1st or 2nd exit after the olympic shooting range.

Dear Mark,

Its so sad to see these dogs like this.

i just have an idea,
why dont we meet the KFC or CHICKEN tikka Management and ask them what they do with the left over bones and chicken when the customers are done with their eating.

why cant we assign someone to collect and deliever these left over bones to these dogs on daily basis.

what do u think?

There is but these dogs are not strays, they’re wild dogs surviving on their own hence why I’m not so concerned about them. Majority of them seemed happy, like a group of friends hanging around wondering the streets.

My heart goes out to these innocent animals. Most have probably been dumped by their owners, left abandoned. Really pains my heart to see this.

Thanks for your feedback. Happy Eid

Why is it sad to see wild dogs and not so for wild cats which i’m sure they outnumber the dogs and runover by speeding cars more often. How about other wild animals in kuwait? I think it is sad to follow other people’s way of life and their cultures for the sake of globalization or modernization or you name it and lose our own ability to think for ourselves. What do you think ?

Some of them look very happy and relaxed, some look very sad and sick. I wish they had a better environment to survive in than a abandoned junkyard in a harsh desert country.
They should just put them in huge containers and ship them to a place with an actual wilderness so that they can have a real chance of survival.

Mark don’t you have any in Lebanon ? I have seen them there
Sad and cute at the same time. Love the Spikes add
But come on people haven’t you seen stray dogs before they have them all over the world !!! in much worst conditions then those, at least some of them are happy with groups !!

I think people so more busy with their lives trying to survive and secure a safe and prosperous future for their children and have very little time to spare on these poor dogs. Hence not everyone has a house with a back yard in Kuwait to keep the dogs, and not all the animal care center are ready with space to take care of any street dog .
I my self saved 3 dogs last years

believe it or not a dog in a pack can be happier than a dog being pamapered in a house, or worse doing what most kuwaitis do, not let the dog in the house and leaving him alone all night till he howls himself silly. Then when he howls himself silly the dad of the house convinces his kids to sell the dogs cause they’re “najasa” and the dogs end up in the friday market, these dogs are waaaaaay happier in their junkyard imo.
Thanx for the pix mark

OMG this is terrible! Yesterday I saw about 20 or even more dogs in Shuwaikh. I went there as my husband told me that he found a dog, tried to come closer but he run away. We tried to find him but instead we found about 20 dogs. I think they are not letting people to come closer as they were beaten and just simply lost trust in humans! This is so sad! I have two dogs and my heart breaks every time I see homeless dog, I can’t take them but I’m trying to help šŸ™ especially with people’s attitude here in Kuwait!

Believe me these dogs are very content and happy. Especially those in packs as someone has pointed out already.

Dogs require a minimum of 1 hour walk on daily basis. That is the absolute minimum. I have two dogs and love them more than “most” people I know, and I struggle to provide the proper care they need.

Thats just the walks, not to mention the training, playing, feeding, medications etc…

How many people do you think are willing to walk their dogs for 10 minutes in this heat? Let alone an hour.

Read a book about dog psychology and you’ll “know” that these dogs are happy where they are.

The only reason I have my dogs, is because if I didnt take them in they would have been died. (Both are rescue dogs from really bizarre situations, if I told you the story youd cry for months.)

Mark, thanks for sharing these pictures with us.
#58 was my favorite such a lovely face =)

not all dogs require 1 hour a day walk some like pugs, chiuauas and other toy breeds will do fine with little to no exercise.
Some big boned breeds like Rotts, mastiffs and other molossers will do well with just half an hour of exercise a day.
I agree that it can be tough to walk dogs in kuwait, in the beach you get stared at, some beardy weirdy once told me the “angels don’t enter the house line”, while walking my dogs. One guy once actually threatened to call the cops on me for walking my dogs, and no my dogs are VERY well trained so they weren’t threatening anyone in any way, it was totally random.
Anyways owning a dog in Kuwait can be difficult but don’t let that dishearten you or the beardy weirdys win.
