Hashtag Burgers

There’s a new burger place called Hashtag that opened up next to Solo Pizza in Kuwait City and I got to try it out tonight. I don’t usually have burgers in the evening but since I had been eating super healthy and clear for nearly 3 weeks I kinda had a weak moment when Fahad posted about it on Instagram. Once I was done with the gym I headed to Hashtag to try it out. I was actually hoping the place would be packed since it would have given myself an excuse not to cheat and drive off but it wasn’t so I parked my car and went in and ordered a burger.

If I was to open a burger place it would be very similar to Hashtag. It’s a very tiny joint in the middle of no where with just 4 burgers on the menu (my place would probably have just one). I ordered a double Hashtag which is 2 beef patties, 2 slices of cheese, grilled onions and their special sauce. I also ordered water as my drink and no fries since I didn’t want to cheat too much.

The burger didn’t take long to make and I sat down and quickly dug in. First impression it looked messy, juicy and delicious. Taste wise it also didn’t disappoint. The bun was soft the patties very juicy and tender and the onions were grilled just the way I like them which is slightly raw. The sauce on the other hand wasn’t that great and I didn’t think it did the burger any justice. Next time I’d probably have it with just ketchup and mustard instead.

My biggest issue is that the place is fairly expensive. A double burger and a bottle of water came out to KD5.250 (4.5 for the burger, 750fils for the water). I think that’s pretty pricy for what should be a small casual burger joint. If you’re interested to try them out (you should), they’re located in Kuwait near Solo Pizza in the building behind Tatami. Here it is on Google Maps [Link]

Wow, that’s straight ripoff pricing. 4.500 for 1 burger? how much are the fries? 3.500 KD?
LMAO @ the never ending “designer burger” trend in this country. When will people learn that “if it doesn’t get all over the place, it doesn’t belong in your face” <—carl's jr AKA Hardees slogan in the US.
They make 'real' burgers over there as opposed to this haughty bs. This is the kind of stuff i am talking about:

think of just how much fun you'd have eating a burger there in that place and atmosphere than being served a sterile little tasteless slider here on a trendy "square" Ikea plate "of course" bc it's "cool" and for 4.500 KD LMAO at least Johnny Rockets has some sort of fun retro theme besides "trendy" and their 12+ is about the best burger in Kuwait bar none, along with their milkshake malts. OMG those are orgasmic

These burgers are better than Johnny Rockets easily but the fact that you think Johnny has the best burgers in Kuwait says you haven’t had burgers anywhere better.

How many burger places have you actually gone to here in Kuwait? It sounds like you’re just criticizing the trend without stepping foot into any of these places. I love JR, but they definitely do not have the best burger in Kuwait (they used to, maybe two years ago, but definitely not now).

And just because Hashtag Burgers are over priced, doesn’t mean all the other burger places are either.

the owners can charge whatever they want..only %$#@ would spend 5kd on a burger

if people were not willing to buy over$$ food, we wouldn’t see a new restaurant creep up every now and then

going by your analogy.. a hashtag burger is better than a 5 guys burger.. am I right?!

and how can you compare a car to a burger?!

a car can have a million things that make it $. while a burger is bread & meat!!

Just because a burger costs $5 in one place doesn’t mean it has to cost $5 in every place. But let’s do it your way and compare the price of the Five Guys burger to Hashtag. If we do that then the hashtag burger is actually cheaper than a Five Guys burger since it would cost you around KD230 for a ticket to NY alone in addition to the $5 for the burger. Or do you know a way of getting a Five Guys burger in Kuwait for just $5?

I do think the Hashtag burger is expensive but not because Five Guys sell theirs for $5.

5 guys burger= +230kd..nice logic

this discussion is going nowhere..good thing you are a marketer and not a lawyer!

Unless you’re getting five guys burgers in Kuwait for $5 this really isn’t a logical argument in the first place.

Hashtag is more expensive than Elevation Burger and Shake Shack. That’s a better argument.

dude..all I am trying to say is that as long people like you are willing to spend 5kd on a burger more people will take the easy route- the no creativity route- and open up a restaurant with overpriced food.

if less people are willing to pay up these prices, we will see business expand in other fields such as art, theatre, entertainment etc.

and my point in regards to 5 guys is to say that a burger does not have to $$ to be considered great.

there is no justification whatsoever for the 5kd burger. and yes, I know you agree its pricey, but when you buy their burgers you are giving them your support- which you are entitled to- but in my opinion should not.

have a good day sir.

Honestly Mark, I’ve been reading your blog for a long time now and I think that just because you had an issue once with Benihana doesn’t mean you have to “recommend” everything you try. I have a feeling you no longer express what you truthfully feel. 5KD for a “ok” cheese burger? And then say we should try it? come on..

In case you missed the last paragraph:

My biggest issue is that the place is fairly expensive. A double burger and a bottle of water came out to KD5.250 (4.5 for the burger, 750fils for the water). I think that’s pretty pricy for what should be a small casual burger joint.

So just because you can’t read doesn’t mean I’m not saying what’s on my mind.

I had dinner there last night.. Loved the fresh & simple ingredients.. Enjoyed the down-to-earth atmosphere.. It’s like walking into your friend’s kitchen and hanging out while he flips the burgers. I’m not a huge fan of those popular burger places in Kuwait that masquerade as clubs, where people are over-dressed, music is too loud, and the place too dark. So Hashtag is ideal for a chill-out with a juicy burger in hand πŸ˜‰

I have to agree with Dougmacho. Queensburger has provided the best flavor in my opinion. I also find Johnny Rockets to be pretty good. No they aren’t as trendy as the other new places, but as long as you ask them to cook your patty how you want it, the flavor is usually spot on.

As for the price of this burger, I would probably skip it based on the price alone. Its just not right to charge that much for a burger unless you are at a classier restaurant. That’s like $16 US dollars for the double burger alone. You could get 4 double-doubles with fries and drinks from In and Out back home for that price. That’s what these burgers look like. Basic In and Out. Meh.

+ 10000. If the customers abandon these restaurants for a month, prices will plummet. Yet, they still go to these places, which cause owners of these average restaurants to charge as much as they want. I admire small projects, but I hate when we get ripped off with these prices. Restaurants in the GCC COST LESS than in Kuwait. Do we all see the pattern?

And…Al-Shaya charges less in his restaurants in Dubai than here. Can’t wait till Texaz Roadhouse opens to compare the prices. But lest’s be fare, Dubai has a better port and imports quality produce that you never see in Kuwait, even fruit is much less in Dubai than here and the government there has put price ceilings on basic necessities and fines stores for breaking the stipulated prices. This government has done nothing but let the market skyrocket.

Never mind Burger King – the best Burgers in Kuwait in my opinion are available at Hardees πŸ™‚

I guess its all down to individual taste. At least Hardees burgers have a taste and the burger you buy actually looks like the image on the menu, unlike many of their competitors adverts!

I want to open a burger joint and call it Snob Burger . I’m going to charge what I feel like at the time . So you might come in and order the same Burger the next day and it will cost you double , and if you don’t like it then you don’t belong in Snobs .If you even complain I will ban you for as long as I feel like it , Plus if I don’t like the way you look , you wont even get in , even if the place it empty . That’s the way I roll Yo! πŸ˜‰

I do think it is pricey.. But I’m willing to support a kuwaiti managing and cooking quality food himself rather than someone who just brings franchises, his time is and effort kinda makes him deserve the premium imo.
The 750fils/1kd for a small bottle of water is something I can’t justify for any restaurant though, negatively affects its image cuz it’s just plain silly.

Sure we all will support him at first. But then what? If he wants to stay open and keep the customers coming he’s going to have to adjust the prices sooner or later. Hard to compete with Elevation, Shake Shack, OFK, Johnny and Fatburger when your prices are more expensive then all the others plus he’s got a lot less overhead so not sure why it’s pricey (no employees, located in the middle of no where so rent it cheap).

Ministry of Commerce needs to intervene in situations like this. 0.750fils for a small bottle of water and 4.5KD for a double cheese burger is abosolutely absurd!

this is ridiculous , 4.5 kd for a casual burger joint >:P . i really like what some people said about not going there to discourage these prices.
