A reader emailed me an article in which Kuwait asks BlackBerry to block around 3000 porn sites so I went to myself what? I opened my browser on my BlackBerry and typed in playboy.com and hit go and guess what? It opened! Why didn’t anyone tell me about this before? I never knew I could access blocked sites on my BlackBerry.
Kuwait has asked BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) to block pornographic sites though will not suspend services like other Gulf states have threatened to do, a local newspaper reported Tuesday.
RIM has given “initial approval” to block 3,000 porn sites at the request of Kuwait’s communications ministry, the al-Jarida daily said, quoting a source it did not identify by name.
It said the Canadian manufacturer asked the ministry to give it until the end of the year to implement the block.
It’s also good to know that the BlackBerry service won’t be blocked in Kuwait. Here is a link to the [Article]

Dude , everybody knows you can acess blocked sites from your blackberry , Its a surprise you never even Tried , i knew it ever since i acessed Demonoid.com by accident.
Well I only use my blackberry to check my work emails and chat on BBM. Don’t really use it for anything else.

Its not just Blackberry, I have a Wataniya connection and I can access playboy.com via GPRS 😛

This is very interesting. The BBM service just proves a controlled experiment that people want no restriction when surfing the net. Because it’s one BB per person and not a whole big computer screen sitting at a living room. And if you guys say “But what about the kids who have BB they’re going to view it.” Ok, you as a parent why are you giving your child a phone in the first place? Just so you can call and know where your kids are? That’s irresponsible of you. Don’t even bother using that as an excuse because there are a lot phones or smartphones that’s out in the market that’s more enough suited to your child needs other than a BB. If your going to ask but kids need the BB to msg their friends for free. Ok, go and buy any regular phone and install Whatsapp. The 2nd most used and growing messenger phone app that contacts BB phones with other phones for free.
I’ve always thought that in today’s time people would be more computer literate/aware and would install blocking softwares on their computer to combat unwanted web content rather than relying on the ISP itself to ruin everything for everyone else. But no let someone else handle the task because were too lazy to do it.

Mathai, filtering porn websites are forced by moc on all ISPs & telecommunication companies. Playboy is one of first ones which were blocked. Anyone in kuwait knows that.
I don’t need to prove anything or want any favour from you 😛
So again, if u r saying u have it, then u are either:
1. Exaggerating / lying
2. Using vpn or proxy servers
3. You have special line from Wataniya (which I really doubt)!
I dont know about my prepaid connection but option #3 could be true 😀

Mathai you don’t have porn on your Wataniya line. You’re accessing porn through the Opera browser who send websites to their servers first, compress it and then send it to your phone. It’s like accessing sites through a proxy.

everyone and their mother knows you can access anything including porn on the BB internet. Because BB uses their own internet filters and not associated with local ISPs.

Tt has been discussed many times before on the blog, but here it goes again, opera mini on any mobile will give you unrestricted access to the web, this is because the traffic is routed through opera servers. So basically you are not connecting to the site, but to the server. Just For fun, log in to your facebook account through opera mini, then log in through your pc. You will get a message saying that your account was accessed from an unfamiliar location and you will have to take the security test(identify pictures of your friends). This happened to me a few months ago after facebook put new security measures in place, and Im not sure if they found a solution to this yet
I guess it works pretty much the same way with blackberry, only here the traffic is routed through the bb servers in canada.

one could always connect to the net on their pc using the BB as a tethered modem. no more blockages.
On your handset there is “BlackBerry Browser” and “Kuwaiti Telecom Company browser” (Wataniya, Viva, Zain). If you open the local browser both browsers will be under restriction and controlled by the local network.
To avoid that, you can restart your blackberry and use ONLY the blackberry browser, and all websites are free to open.
