Review: Avatar

Last night I went and watched Avatar in 3D at the movies here in Lebanon. I’ve been trying to watch it the past few nights but it’s always sold out except for yesterday when I managed to find two seats empty.. first row on the left. Horrible location but I figured if it was really bad I could just walk out and come back another time.

It was the first time I watch a movie in 3D, actually the second time since the first was JAWS when it was released in Cinema Salmiya back in the early 80s. I wasn’t looking forward to wearing 3D glasses and actually wanted to watch Avatar in 2D because of the stupid glasses but it was only showing in 3D so I didn’t have a choice. That turned out to be a good thing.

I loved the movie and I loved the 3D. 3D theater technology has come a long way since JAWS that’s for sure. Even though I was sitting on the first row and to the side I still managed to enjoy the movie and the 3D effects. I had a major neck cramp by the end of the movie and I really wished I was sitting in a better location but that still didn’t change the fact that this movie is EPIC. I wasn’t expecting to be impressed since from the trailers the movie looked normal but honestly the trailer doesn’t do it any justice. You need to watch the movie on a big screen and you NEED to watch it in 3D.

I heard that Cinescape is having technical problems with Avatar in 3D and so they’re only playing the 2D version for now. I think I read on Gizmodo that a lot of theaters worldwide are having similar technical issues so its really not their fault. I personally think you should wait until they fix their problem and then watch it in 3D. It would be a shame to watch it in 2D especially if you haven’t watched any 3D movie before because this would be the perfect one to start with.

I didn’t have any problems with the movie, nothing to complain about. The story was great, the length was perfect and passed by quickly, the movie was just perfect. The final score is a 5 out of 5. Keep in mind I watched this movie from the worse location possible so everyone else should have a much better experience. [YouTube]

Mark, there is a spoiler if i’m not mistaken, end of movie or something i couldn’t continue reading so i’m not sure if there is a spoiler or not, a hence maybe.

I thought the story was predictable and kinda cliche. But like the flow and structuring of the movie was so awesome that it really didn’t bother me at all. It’s like i knew what was going to happen but I didn’t care cause I was so sucked into the world of Pandora and what-not.

I saw it in the UAE in 3rd as well….I like that experience. I felt weird in the beginning of the movie, but then I got used to it. I almost left the theater with the goggles on! Good cinema, however I am getting tired of the Hollywood trick where natives are saved by another white American guy! (Avatar, Dances w/ Wolves, Last Samurai, Lawrence of Arabia etc.)
The language was kind of dumb too. I guess they were trying to make the dialagoue a “cooler” edge, but eneded with way too many profanities. This made this otherwise fantastic movie feel cheap somehow

Okay, but with a full 9/10 minutes cut from the screening time it makes sense to see this outside Kuwait. (153min in Kuwait)

Can’t wait to see this in 3D. I wanted to ask if you ( Mark) think that they will cut out alot of stuff from the movie or not in terms of “bad” scenes?

Frederic: I didn’t put any spoilers or details about the movie in my post

Kuwait: Thanks just fixed it

Moe: There were maybe 2 kissing scenes and one scene where there was some kind of sex. If those scenes are cut you wouldn’t miss out on the movie.

Ah thanks Mark .. I was waiting for review on this one.
A shame that we dont have IMAX here in Amman, but 3D shows are running fine.
I will certainly go for it tonight!

The movie in Kuwait is horribly censored. There are entire scenes chopped up (and I’m not talking about the kissing scenes).

I don’t want to point out which because that will spoil it for those that haven’t seen it.

Oh, and Mark:

It was the first time I watch a movie in 3D <– need revision here

Saw this film on the premiere night in Dubai right before coming to Kuwait and I’m glad I did…

watching the film in 2-D really hurts the experience and takes this film from a 5 star class adventure film to a 4 star “oh yeah it’s cool and all” type film.

I really don’t get why there’s no 3-D in Kuwait. Apparently there was 3-D for a day then they removed it…

In Kuwait they dont just cut kissing/sex they cut anything that features skimpy clothing and half the movie features those female aliens walking, riding or fighting in those outfits.

My friend saw the flick here and stated there were many, many cuts and they were all over the place even during action scenes.

10 minutes from a movie that is (approximately) 163 minutes long.
That means you lose 1 minute of movie about every 16 minutes… Sex, no sex, kissing, outfits, whatever. That is going to mess up any script.

I watched AVATAR 3D in Amman – City Center Mall, story was predictable, Pandora world looked like Outlands in World of WarCraft, the sound was terrible, didn’t sense much 3D except the subtitles lol, I’ve been to IMAX Scientific Center and its much much much better.

The movie wasn’t censored in Amman. though i expected they make love by their hair ends

Good thing that u watched it in Lebanon as several scenes were cut here !!!
Even when aliens are making out, they cut it !!! LOL

Mesh:

Then the theater you were at played it wrong, if you couldn’t tell what scenes were in 3D or weren’t in 3D.

There’s nothing wrong with a story if it’s predictable. You know the good guys will win, you know some good guys will die, and you know most of the bad guys will die. Thats the kind of movie this is, just like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings or any epic movie. This isn’t Memento or Se7en.

+ the FPS played that movie was low to be 3D, i have NVIDIA 3D VISION LCD Shutter Glasses at home and i play WoW in 3D with SAMSUNG 120 Hz refresh rate, that played a rule in not making it realistic , there few scenes that made me move my head during the movie, one of them where that guy playing Golf to the Mug

i dont know why the cut under dressed women in the movie, when you see more porn by sitting at any of the cafe’s in the avenues, people here are in complete denial

Hmmm definitely a guy movie..Was hoping for a more spiritual meaning to the movie. I give it 2.5/5. But had it been 3D maybe slightly higher score.

I saw it in IMAX 3D in Dubai and at a great seating location, I just had to book a day in advance and the 10:30 AM show
I just can’t Imagin anything better, it was Awoosome

I tried the IMAX theater in 360 before and I was really disappointed its small and does not give you the feeling of total Immersion a true IMAX theater does ( If you can take a plane go to Dubai have a fun weekend and see Avatar in IMAX 3D at Bin Batuta mall nothing like it )

This was one of the most amazing movies i have ever seen! It was absolutely beautiful. Details were incredible. You should check out the 20/20 story about James Cameron and how he thought up this idea long ago, but was simply waiting for technology to catch up to his idea.

I actually watched it here in Bahrain and we saw it in 3D. I’m surprised they didn’t chop it up like some of you guys said happened in Kuwait. The scenes are too fantastic to not watch it in 3D!

And to top it off, my bro worked on it! 🙂

They didnt cut any skimpy dressed alien women in Kuwait it was just random scenes. It obvious that they wanted to shorten the movie. Plus Im guessing the 3D version of the movie was screwed up in Kuwait due to cinescape cutting 10 min out of it. Just a guess.

We need better people to take control of the cinemas in Kuwait. Its getting annoying.

Mark … Jaws (ahhh) .. man you take me back to the good old days. I saw it too in Salmiya. I saved those glasses for ages and they were classic.

Love to see it here in 3D … waiting for the IMAX to start showing it.

I wish james cameron goes back to the more manly alien series and saves us from the aweful avp movies, although I like the fact both aliens and predators live in the same universe.

Yeah, we just saw it today at 360. Sound was incredible, really shakes you in your seat. The 3d was excellent too. Story meh.

Worst part was the cuts. I’m used to that, actually appreciate it usually, I don’t need that crud in my head. But this was really weird. It seemed random. At first we thought they were cutting nipple shots or something, but then it would cut at a totally random point with nothing going on. Really made for a disjointed experience.

Oh well, that’s what blu-ray is for I guess.
