I recently found out about a really good Iraqi kebab restaurant in Salmiya which I decided to try out. Iraqi kebab is different from Persian kebab in that it’s generally not as fatty so you don’t have the same strong aftertaste that stays with you the whole day. It’s lighter which is why I prefer it. The restaurant name roughly translates to the “special (or unique) Iraqi kebab restaurant”, and I think they’ve been open since 2016 since that’s when their Instagram account opened up.
It’s a small little place located in the neighborhood that lies between Restaurant Street and Souk Salmiya. I ordered the normal kebab plate which comes with three skewers, grilled tomato and their freshly baked bread. The kebab meat was tender, tasty and didn’t leave any bad aftertaste. The bread which I think is Egyptian or Egyptian style is baked fresh in store.
Two kebab plates and a side of hummus came out to KD5.750. Due to the pandemic dine-in is closed so you’re either gonna have to eat it while it’s nice and hot in the car, or do takeaway. Their Instagram account is @kabab_iraki and here is their location on Google Maps.

How do u compare with Kebab Al-Hujja?
Kebab Al-Hujja is Persian kebabs
This is a fantastic place. Was taken here by 2 Iraqi colleagues who rate it as the best Iraqi kebab in Kuwait.
wow good find.
does anyone know what kind of kebabs (persian or iraqi) are served in the many open air joints in the mubarakiya area?
Persian
How does it compare to the kebabs in the Kuwait Fisheries building? The one that’s opposite KFH in KIPCO tower?
Oh malek al mashawee (or mashweeyat?), that place is great one of my favs but this place has better kebabs.
This place trumps malek al mashwiyat. Better babs with fresher meat and lower prices.

Afrah Al-Nojoom
do they have another location, a bit closer? 😀
Yep, that’s the one I was talking about – Malek Al Mashwiyat.
Gotta try it out if you say it has better kebabs.
You should try Kebab Abu Fadel -Iraqi
They are located in Ardiya.

Oh I’ve tried them in Hawally

How does it compare to Kabab Abu Fadel in Hawally?
I don’t really remember Abu Fadel much, I thought I posted a review so wanted to go back and read it but I couldn’t find a post on it. I went there years ago based on a recommendation by someone in the blogs comments but only went once and I’m guessing because of Hawally traffic and not because the food wasn’t good.
Abu Fadel – Iraqi – They are in Shuwaikh too. I have tried them. They are really good.
Coming from someone who was based in Iraq for a while and knows the taste of the original Iraqi Kabab with its recipes from Erbil to Falluja all the way to Baghdad & South (mainstream) Most of the Iraqi kabab in Kuwait is the mainstream recipe of Baghdad/south ones and lacks a key ingredient which is the FLAVORFUL local Iraqi meat.
Thus, I am yet to find the right fit in Kuwait, However, I think Ishtar in Mubarakya is the closest it could get to Iraqi Kebab

P.S. I will add that to my list to try and see if it’s anywhere close to the Iraqi Kabab recipes I tried before in Iraq and give you my feedback here.
I tried it for lunch yesterday, and it was pretty good. light and tastes just great. I can’t argue with the taste being one of the best I ever had for an Iraqi kebab in Kuwait.
Mainstream recipe, but very light and no after taste at all. A new restaurant goes down into my frequent to visit/order list.
Do they make chicken kebabs?
hmmm don’t think so, don’t see it on the menu nor in any of the photos

They claim to be the old “Republic of Iraq Restaurant”
مطعم الجمهورية العراقية
It used to in Shuhada street near sawaber or where kipco tower is now, I forget. I used to go there before the invasion, it was the best kebab period. I remember they had a huge picture of Saddam Hussain on the wall and all the staff were from Iraq. Needless to say, they closed down due to the Iraqi invation.
To kebob or not to kebob, that is the question
Kibabs
Tried this today – the kebab and bread was good but don’t recommend any of the other items on the menu.
Hello Mark,
The correct spelling for their instagram account is @Kabab_iraki
thanks
After reading your review I went to try this place and it doesn’t even compare to Ishtar restaurant in mubarakiya and not only their kabab everything there is amazing from service to food if you think this kabab is good you should definitely try Ishtar
