The title of the video says Sean Connery’s comments were racist but I didn’t hear anything offensive. What grabbed my attention though was the quality of the footage. This is the best copy I’ve seen, I wonder if the whole match can be found and downloaded in that quality? [YouTube]

I dont know probably because of 0:35 ?
He says something like “The second goal from Platini, the (something) BLACK looks at the stands”, referring to they Sheik ..
He says “..the second goal provokes black looks from the stand.”
A black look is a displeased look.
I Agree wit u Mark…nuttin racist abt it….
I’ve always wanted to see this… Thanks, Mark
whats racist about this commentary?
This video is rather good though, probably restored footage from the archives. Good luck finding the whole match.
At the beginning he said something like while Newzealand qualified by a cheerful homespun effort, Kuwait did by intensive development… and the ‘prince’s massive personal investment’, which could mean lots of things!
But man how much power Sheik Fahad have had! 🙂
1982, no one knew Kuwait and they were saying you brought nomads to play football? so in that world cup series the sheikh shipped a camel to spain and he walked the camel in the field to proove to them that yes we are from the desert and we are PROUD of it! Before that, he also brought the camel to Newzealand’s field.
About cancelling the goal, there was a fine that costs X amount of money, the sheikh payed double that fine saying that we RULE and don’t get ruled by others.
Finally there is nothing racist!
Viva classic Kuwait’s national team 😀
nothing racist however somewhat offensive. He talks of the money that the shai5 had as if he didn’t deserve it or something but still nothing racist.
It’s kind of ironic how he talks about the shai5’s money yet he (one of the worlds top paid actors) probably margins not far from what the shai5 was worth. Also like getting paid $30,000,000 + and being filthy rich for acting is justifiable but not for leading a country a country isn’t.
He’s clever with choosing his words but you can smell the stink of racism deep down in his voice.
Oooh Ohhh oh hatha ygoool ha! roo7 yal azrag!
It’s a bit condecending. However the situation is a bit unorthodox for the World Cup. I don’t think it was equalled by another. I felt Sean Connery was commenting as if he was on National Geographic !
i agree with you mark nothing racist about the comments …. let me know if you find the whole match……..
lol ! they cancelled the 4th goal after the sheikh went down to the pitch ! i’ve never seen somehting like that before and i’ve never seen someone go down from his seat to the pitch just like that .and why is sean connery commentating on a football game.
Here is a link with details regarding the camel incident

golden years, sadly we will never see anything close to that again unless we go through a drastic change.
“we RULE and don’t get ruled”
i didnt find it racist nor offensive, but his last comment was actually funny, when he described the fine as “one minute’s wages” !!
Well, if he had a tinge of racism in his tone, it’s because of the childish behavior demonstrated by the Kuwaiti officials on the world football stage.
Respect the game and people will respect you.
“he was fined 5000 Pounds, 1 mint wages” kinda of racist or not ?
Hey being childish does not justify racism not that he was racist
Moi – calling someone rich is not racist.
He probably made that much anyway
agree with duke… it was offensive, and he was acting like the sheikh didnt deserve his money and that they were there because of the sheikh’s money and not because of talent etc…. but i havent seen anything like it either, the guy actually stepped down and intervened, i actually liked it, show some feeling for the game! and maybe he was right? so ya i do think v. racist & condescending 🙂
its racists the way he sayed it in brit lingo .. but whats new ..
🙂
LOL at 1:09…guy dancing 😉
cajie, i know u feel abit jealous cause even if by some sort of chance u turn into a maharaja u still will make what ur making right now i.e minimum wage…respect for fahad the martyr.
Well said Hi. The shai5 made history during that match.
Bros there’s nothing hinting racism in Sean’s commentary.
@hi..
coming up with cheap insults does not take away the fact that Kuwait entered world cup stage in 1982 (27 year ago) but the football quality has been going down ever since. Ever wondered why?
The constant banning by the FIFA should clue you in.
Football is played here with a passion – and with the right attitude, Kuwait could have been a force to reckon with.
Brilliant clip! I heard nothing which was racist to be honest.
For someone old enough to have lived through the period, the whole “Our Camel is a Winner” deal occurred after the first game in New Zealand. The Kiwi fans held up signs that said “Kuwait is like the crude” and “stick to your camels.” After that, the camel became center stage for the Kuwaiti team as the New Zealand team sat through camel rides around the stadium before their game in Kuwait along with that infamous camel logo displayed everywhere. I do remember the Kuwait vs France game very well (I even have it on Betamax tape somewhere). That ref lost his job for disallowing the goal, never to work for FIFA ever again!
Btw, I also see nothing racist in this video. Sean Connery was merely paid to read off a script.
hi: “respect for fahad the martyr”
just FYI 7abibi –> he was not the only martyr. there were so many, yet we dont see areas/hosbitals/leagues/schools being named after them.
besides he got that team ready, its not like he built it from the grounds up!
he loved Kuwait, thats true. but personal ambition can fire back at times…..just ask his sons!
nothing racist, nice video , Long live Fahad
