I was in Hawalli yesterday when I decided to pass by the store Best Buy Kuwait (not official Best Buy just a copy). Turns out they had the Sony UMPC on display. I had only seen it before online so it was cool seeing it in person. Its super tiny and I really wish Apple would come up with something like it. They were selling it for KD699. [Link]

A week ago Z District reviewed the Seagate Portable HD and although I am a Seagate fan I thought the hard drive looked ugly and fragile. This is why I decided to put up a review of the drive that competes directly with the Seagate one, the Western Digital Passport.

I ordered the 120GB Western Digital Passport drive so I could use it to back my MP3s and personal work. I already have an external drive but I needed something much smaller and portable. Since I was going to use it for my most important data, the drive had to be reliable and durable. Thats why I went with the Passport drive, I have never had any problems with Western Digital hard drives and from the pictures the Passport drive looked like it could take a beating. Now that I have it sitting in front of me I can tell you that it can.

The Passport drive case is made from 2 materials, half of it is alluminum and the other half is rubber. The drive feels like its indestructable but still looks really slick and extremely cool. The other positive thing is you only need 1 USB slot to both power and run the drive unlike the Seagate which requires 2 USB slots.

I really am in love with the drive and can’t find a single flaw except for the fact that 120GB is the largest size available. I give it a 4.5 out of 5.

I have an Exabyte VXA-1 tape drive which I want to give away for free. It takes 33GB tapes and they are very very reliable. You could shove the tapes into a freezer or dump them into boiling coffee and you would still be able to retreive the information from them. The version of the tape drive I have is external and connects using Firewire. The price of this tape drive brand new is $1,099.

I am giving the drive away for free because I am having problems with it. I don’t know if its a software problem or hardware problem. I passed it to TivoGuy and he was able to get it working but when I tried using it on my Mac it would sometimes backup the data and sometimes it would give me an error. It could be from the backup tapes, it could be a software problem or it could be a hardware problem. I am not sure and I don’t care. If you want the tape drive just leave a comment below. You will get it without any tapes and without the firewire cable. If more then one person wants the drive then I will give it to the geekiest one.

I think I figured out what I fucked up in Nats Powerbook yesterday. I think I damaged the DC-IN Board. I managed to find some second hand ones on eBay that cost between $15 to $45 which is pretty cheap. The problem is installing it is going to be a bitch. [Link]

I think I busted Nat’s PowerBook. My creative director got a new power adapter for his Powerbook since his adapter’s head was mangled up, I decided to take it off his hands and its been with me for like 2 weeks now. I don’t know what I was thinking but for some stupid reason today I decided to see if it still worked, and I just went ahead and plugged it into Nats Powerbook. It didn’t work but when I went back and plugged Nats power adapter it also didnt work! Now I think I might have damaged her Powerbooks power socket or maybe short cicuited something. So last month I broke our dogs leg and this month I broke her Powerbook.. I hope she doesn’t believe in the 3 strikes and you are out rule…

I was flipping through flickr when I found pictures of this guys room at the Hilton Resort in Mangaf. The guy I think works with the US military and has atleast 5 laptops in there with a whole bunch of equipment that would fit nicely with Jack Bauer. Nat’s been using Skype to call and talk to her family and friends back in Lebanon and it works pretty cool and its also fairly cheap. The problem is that talking to your family using headphones and the Apple Powerbooks built in mic is a pretty dorky experience. So I decided to look around for a phone handset that would plug-in and work with the Mac. There are many handsets available but 99% of them only work with PCs. Even some handsets that were compatible with the Mac ended up lacking features the same phone would have if connected to the PC. The coolest Skype phone I found was a cordless Linksys and at $105 it wasn’t too expensive, the downside ofcourse was that it wasn’t Mac compatible. Finally I stumbled upon the IPEVO phone which is pictured above. It looked really cool, it was fully compatible with the Mac and it only cost $29. So I ordered a white one for myself and a black one for my sister. The phone also works with PC’s so thats a bonus. Once the handsets arrive next week I will take some pictures and post my feedback on them but so far it looks like a really great device.
