Kuwait Fireworks Show – Kite Flyers Perspective

I promise this will be the last post related to the fireworks show but I really have to share this video. It’s the fireworks show shot from the perspective of the kite flyers who took part in the event. I swear one scene reminded me of the movie Apocalypse Now. [YouTube]

Radisson Blu Hotel Redevelopment Progress

I follow Radisson Blu (previously known as SAS) on Facebook and one thing about them I find cool is the fact they keep posting pictures of the build progress. Below is how the hotel will look like once completed and the above is one of their latest shots showing the progress of the hotel. Originally they were even supposed to have a live webcam but that didn’t work out. You can check all the latest shots of the place [Here]

My friend sent me the image above which he’s seen a number of times under various bridges in Kuwait. Does anyone know what these are? Is it a viral campaign of some sort?

Drug prices in Kuwait

965Malls posted the list above last week but I just saw it now. It’s translated from an Arabic newspaper and it shows the prices of different drugs in Kuwait. [Link]

Note: What I found interesting about the list is the list itself. Since drugs are illegal there is no official price list but this list by the newspaper is kinda like one.

Kuwait at night… from space

The Guardian published the photo above of Kuwait at night taken from space. The photo was one of many photos captured by the European Space Agency and Nasa satellites last month. The description of the photo says:

A night view of Kuwait City, the coastal city which serves as Kuwait’s political and economic capital. The metropolitan area has a population approaching 2.5 million

Check out The Guardian article [Here]

Below is another photo taken from space back in August also showing Kuwait at nigh. It was previously featured as a NASA image of the day.

NASA have a pretty good writeup on the photo above as well as a higher resolution photo which you can check out [Here]

The Kuwait Towers Renovation

The Kuwait Towers have been closed for a few months due to the fact they’re being renovated. If you’re curious to see how they will turn out after the work is completed check out the video above. [YouTube]

Update: I just found out the video above is a design proposed around six years back but was never approved. There currently isn’t an approved design since they’re still getting proposals from various companies and this process requires another 6 to 9 months. There are plans to have a 3D theater and some other features you can see in the video above but again there is no design finalized as of now.

Currently the Kuwait Towers are closed and the interiors of all three towers have been ripped out since they’re upgrading the fire system, plumbing, electricity cables etc.. in preparation so that once a design is approved they can start work immediately. It’s expected to take 3 years for the project to be completed and the towers to reopen.

Light My Fire

I’ve been looking for camping gear recently (more on that in another post) and I was planning to order FireSteel (watch the video above) from Amazon but when I checked the Light My Fire website it turns out Explorers Base in Tilal Complex was the local dealer.

I really love the Light My Fire products. They don’t have a lot of stuff but what they do have is really beautifully designed (they’re Swedish). The FireSteel in the video above is super practical when camping plus they have really good looking Sporks and Lunchboxes.

Price wise they’re selling them locally for nearly the same price as Amazon. The FireSteel costs around KD4 while a pack of 4 plastic Sporks are selling for KD2.750. You can check out all the Light My Fire products on their website [Here]

I was an alcohol dealer in Kuwait – Ask me anything

If you’re familiar with Reddit then you should be familiar with IAMA (I Am A/Ask Me Anything). It’s when a person states what they do for a living and then allows people to ask them anything. An American girl going by the nickname GlitterNails posted “I was an “Alcohol Dealer” in a Islamic Country. AMA” and within the comments you quickly find out by Islamic country she meant Kuwait.

It’s an interesting read and if you’ve got the time check it out. Right now it has over 850 comments. [Link]

Thanks Z

What you need to start making soft serve ice cream at home

I don’t think there is anybody who doesn’t like soft serve ice cream which is why setting up your own machine at home, diwaniya or chalet is such a great idea and one that turns out isn’t too expensive.

There are just three things you need, the soft serve machine, the ice cream flavors and the biscuit cones.

I’ll start with the machines since this is where most of the investment is. I passed by two locations, a small store in Dajeej and the Mabrook store in Shuwaikh. I’m sure there are other stores as well but those are two I was told about. The small store in Dajeej had only one machine and was selling it for KD4,000. Mabrook on the other hand a around 4 or 5 different machines with the most affordable starting at KD500. It’s the Italian made Ugolini mini gel and it holds only one flavor. They also had other machines that were more expensive including the Taylor branded one pictured above which is the same brand Pinkberry uses. Obviously that’s overkill for home use but in case you have around KD5,000 to splurge that’s the Rolls Royce of these machines.

The second thing you need to make your soft serve ice cream is the actual product mix which you’ll have to fill the machine with. KDD sells them and they had two sizes to choose from. The picture above is of their 1 liter pack and you can get it in either vanilla or chocolate flavor. Each pack should be enough for around 6 to 9 cones. The 1 liter pack costs 575 fils and this is the size I would recommend getting for home use or small diwaniyas. But, they also sell 12 liter packs. The 12 liter packs cost KD6.5 each and can make around 80 cones. They also have an offer now where if you buy 5 packs they give you one free. Finally you need cones. KDD also sell the biscuit cones and a pack of 800 costs KD4.860.

So to summarize the post it’s going to cost you around KD500 to set up a small soft serve station at home, diwaniya or chalet. Depending on how often it’s used it could be pretty feasible.

Mermaid hunter

This was in the paper around 10 days back but I just read about it on “Traveler’s Random Mental Wanderings & Contemplations”

A man was taken to the Psychiatric Hospital after coastguards plucked him out of the sea where he had been, reportedly, looking for mermaid. Coastguards reported to the scene, near the Messilah Beach, following reports of a man walking into the sea with his clothes on in what passersby thought was a suicide attempt. After the man was located and rescued, he told officers that he was simply looking for a mermaid he believes to be in the area. After failing to convince the adamant man out of his plans, the officers offered to help him go to another beach and search for mermaids there. Their ploy worked and they instead escorted the man to the mental facility.

Pretty strange and funny. Anyway check out “Traveler’s Random Mental Wanderings & Contemplations”, I just started reading it awhile ago and so far I find the guy really entertaining to read. [Link]

Better garbage bins needed

Just read an interesting post on the K’S PATH blog in which they’re recommending closed garbage bins (basically with lids) similar to the ones pictured above over the current open ones in helping to prevent strays.

I think that’s actually a pretty good idea and doesn’t require much work from the municipality other than some financial investment to purchase the new bins. Not only will it help prevent stray dogs and cats from munching and living off the garbage but it would also hide the garbage from plain sight and also reduce the foul smell. [Link]
