House of Mirrors

Lidia al-Qattan explaining the Big Bang Room

I’ve being thinking about this post for the past few days trying to figure out what I was going to write exactly. The place turned out to be such a cool and surreal experience that I just couldn’t figure out where to start or how to say what I wanted to say. In the end I decided that I’ll be brief and not go into details so that you go there with no expectations other than having a good time.

Me posing outside the house with @kuzmoz

Last week a friend asked me if I wanted to join them on a tour of the House of Mirrors and since I had never been I decided to join them. The House of Mirrors belongs to Lidia al-Qattan, the widow of Khalifa al-Qattan, a renowned Kuwaiti artist. She started decorating one small wall with mirrors and through time more and more walls were decorated until the whole house inside and out was covered with mirrors.

The reception area with munchies

As I said, I’m not going to go into details because I don’t want to ruin the experience for you but simply put Lidia is such an amazing person. We were expecting the tour of the house to take around 30 minutes but it took us 3 hours and the 3 hours literally flew by. She was such an incredible host full of stories and the whole experience was seriously pretty trippy.

If you’ve never been to the House of Mirrors you should and when you do make sure you go with a bunch of friends since its an experience that should be shared. The cost of the tour is KD2 per person on weekdays and KD3 on weekends. The location of the house Street 94 Qadisiya, House 17 Block 9. You need to call ahead and make an appointed on this number 22518522.

The most amazing smell

A couple of weeks back I was walking in Avenues Phase III when suddenly I smelled something incredibly good. I followed the smell all the way inside the Williams-Sonoma store to a pot sitting behind the checkout counter. I asked one of the employees about the smell and she was extremely helpful, like she went into their store room and brought out all the ingredients to show me kind of helpful. She told me it was basically just a crockpot (rice cooker/slow cooker) filled with water and had the following ingredients boiling inside:

– 2 sliced oranges
– 2 chopped apples
– 2 sticks of cinnamon
– 3 teaspoons of cinnamon powder

So last night I passed by Kenwood (Jashanmal in Kuwait City) and picked up a crockpot along with all the ingredients I needed from the supermarket. I found crockpots that were as cheap as KD5 at Xcite but they only had crockpots in white while I wanted a black one. The Kenwood dealer didn’t have a black one either but I ended up getting the stainless steel version pictured above which looked pretty cool but also cost around KD15.

All you do is add the ingredients with water into the pot and then just wait until the water boils and your house fills up with an incredible aroma. My apartment now smells like I’ve been baking apple pies all day long and I love it.

Ali Al Salem Base Open Day

Not sure how I missed this yesterday but it was open day at the Ali Al Salem Air Force base and anyone could get in and check the planes and helicopters they had on display. They even had drones on display!

Marzouq visited the base and took a ton of photos which he’s uploaded onto his blog and you can check out [Here]

Kuwait Fireworks Show – Kite Flyers Perspective

I promise this will be the last post related to the fireworks show but I really have to share this video. It’s the fireworks show shot from the perspective of the kite flyers who took part in the event. I swear one scene reminded me of the movie Apocalypse Now. [YouTube]

Radisson Blu Hotel Redevelopment Progress

I follow Radisson Blu (previously known as SAS) on Facebook and one thing about them I find cool is the fact they keep posting pictures of the build progress. Below is how the hotel will look like once completed and the above is one of their latest shots showing the progress of the hotel. Originally they were even supposed to have a live webcam but that didn’t work out. You can check all the latest shots of the place [Here]

My friend sent me the image above which he’s seen a number of times under various bridges in Kuwait. Does anyone know what these are? Is it a viral campaign of some sort?

Drug prices in Kuwait

965Malls posted the list above last week but I just saw it now. It’s translated from an Arabic newspaper and it shows the prices of different drugs in Kuwait. [Link]

Note: What I found interesting about the list is the list itself. Since drugs are illegal there is no official price list but this list by the newspaper is kinda like one.

Kuwait at night… from space

The Guardian published the photo above of Kuwait at night taken from space. The photo was one of many photos captured by the European Space Agency and Nasa satellites last month. The description of the photo says:

A night view of Kuwait City, the coastal city which serves as Kuwait’s political and economic capital. The metropolitan area has a population approaching 2.5 million

Check out The Guardian article [Here]

Below is another photo taken from space back in August also showing Kuwait at nigh. It was previously featured as a NASA image of the day.

NASA have a pretty good writeup on the photo above as well as a higher resolution photo which you can check out [Here]

The Kuwait Towers Renovation

The Kuwait Towers have been closed for a few months due to the fact they’re being renovated. If you’re curious to see how they will turn out after the work is completed check out the video above. [YouTube]

Update: I just found out the video above is a design proposed around six years back but was never approved. There currently isn’t an approved design since they’re still getting proposals from various companies and this process requires another 6 to 9 months. There are plans to have a 3D theater and some other features you can see in the video above but again there is no design finalized as of now.

Currently the Kuwait Towers are closed and the interiors of all three towers have been ripped out since they’re upgrading the fire system, plumbing, electricity cables etc.. in preparation so that once a design is approved they can start work immediately. It’s expected to take 3 years for the project to be completed and the towers to reopen.

Light My Fire

I’ve been looking for camping gear recently (more on that in another post) and I was planning to order FireSteel (watch the video above) from Amazon but when I checked the Light My Fire website it turns out Explorers Base in Tilal Complex was the local dealer.

I really love the Light My Fire products. They don’t have a lot of stuff but what they do have is really beautifully designed (they’re Swedish). The FireSteel in the video above is super practical when camping plus they have really good looking Sporks and Lunchboxes.

Price wise they’re selling them locally for nearly the same price as Amazon. The FireSteel costs around KD4 while a pack of 4 plastic Sporks are selling for KD2.750. You can check out all the Light My Fire products on their website [Here]

I was an alcohol dealer in Kuwait – Ask me anything

If you’re familiar with Reddit then you should be familiar with IAMA (I Am A/Ask Me Anything). It’s when a person states what they do for a living and then allows people to ask them anything. An American girl going by the nickname GlitterNails posted “I was an “Alcohol Dealer” in a Islamic Country. AMA” and within the comments you quickly find out by Islamic country she meant Kuwait.

It’s an interesting read and if you’ve got the time check it out. Right now it has over 850 comments. [Link]
