The original McDonalds location on the Gulf Road is turning into a Burger King and Pizza Hut. The building is looking pretty nice so far and I saw it a few months back at night while they were testing the lighting and all the vertical lines around the structure were lit up by LEDs. I just hope it doesn’t end up looking tacky and ruining the Gulf Road landscape.
As I’ve posted previously, McDonalds has now moved to a new location further up the road next to the Kuwait Towers, where Ruby Tuesday used to be.

Pizza Hut!! I have to say fast food is probably bad for us, but in Kuwait – and I’ve never seen the same level of quality outside Kuwait – the salad bar at Pizza Hut is the best!
The municipality want to place cameras in every restaurant kitchen around kuwait, Fast food here is clean and well regulated which is more than i can say for most fast food places globally. As long as you work out (Atleast walk) and eat fast food in moderation I genuinely don’t see what is wrong with fast foods.
“The municipality want to place cameras in every restaurant kitchen around kuwait”
That’s not true. Source: I work in the restaurant industry.
I saw it on an Instagram account news account (i don’t remember if it was the municipality or a local news paper), i sent them a dm right now to make sure. Idk if they do reply, usually most ministries do but some organisations like shaheed never reply so check if you have anyone at the municipality. Ill try to find the post but it has been a while. i do apologise if it isnt true.
Yes, exactly… Kuwait has the highest level of cleanliness and quality in their franchises than any other country I have visited. I don’t see the need for cameras, that is becoming so popular now a days. I’m not sure what effect it has on the performance of the employees – I think having a positive management team along with good work conditions would produce a higher level of work than a surveillance camera in the workplace.
I dont mind it, just to rest assured. Also if you have food poisoning it the municipality can review it to see it there were any violations by the restaurant. However i am checking with the municipality to make sure it is legit or not. I am all for it tbh.
Dude what you’re saying is absurd, this isn’t China, no way will the municipality install their own cameras in every restaurant and kitchen in Kuwait.
What is so bad about it though? It isn’t a breech of personal freedoms, it is transparency like having a glass wall where you can see what is going on inside the restaurant.
Are you asking what’s wrong with having the government spy on its people?
It is regulating businesses, Im not merciful when it comes to businesses. Businesses aren’t people.
you regulate with regulations, what’s you’re proposing is called spying.
I dont mind having businesses especially life threatening ones like hospitals and restaurants/food producers being spied on.
All restaurants have cameras in the kitchen and restaurant for a bunch of reasons. What I meant was that no way the municipality will be install their OWN cameras in kitchens and restaurants.
As someone who was put in charge of the cctvs in a gym (outside of Kuwait) which even had some spicy female patrons let me tell you, watching that gets old. Like after the first day, I was done. It is difficult to monitor the banal activities of workout stations etc. so you can imagine watching cctvs of a large number of kitchens to see who wipes brows or sneezes, man I pity the foo.
It’s a shame that even now in 2020 we give franchises prime locations. I just wonder how well they’ll age in the next 20 years, and if they’ll survive or not.
The bidding was open to everyone, they just happened to win this location.
At least it remains a “public” space that is accessible to a wider audience, ie all levels of society enjoy these fast food franchises from time to time, as opposed to a high end venue.
It isnt fair refusing a fast food place just because we are too good for it now even though we grew up eating fastfood with our fam while looking out at the sea. Plus they see more demand than trendy places. As long as the locations are visually appealing and well maintained then i dont see what is wrong with them.
Disappointing. It’s almost like these people in the locals as cattle. Whatever happened to tourism and attracting people to Kuwait ?
Sea front locations are prime real estate and we should’ve invested in something a bit more pleasing to the eye. Touristic attractions. I’m fine with having 5 star restaurants, like the one in Kuwait towers. But it really depresses me when I see the finest locations being used to sell junk food / Fast food.
More Abdullah Al-Salem cultural museums and centres. More science centres. Less fast food joints. It’s bad enough almost half the population suffer from obesity and diabetes.
More science centers? Have you ever been to the cultural center? I’ve been 10+ times and I think I’ve only seen people there twice. It’s empty 99% of the time. People don’t want science centers.
But I like how people are complaining about a fast food place opening there because I know if it was an expensive restaurant opening there people would also complain that it isn’t accessible to everyone.
Truth of the matter is all over the world not just in Kuwait if you go to a very tourist location all you’ll find are fast food joints and franchises. You’re not gonna find a mum and pop store in the middle of time square or on Oxford Street. It sucks but that’s how business works.
You have a point, but I am so thankful for KWI government for really having a fair balance of beachside property use…..there are public beaches, mixed retail / restaurant use of beachside property, and some hotel & private residence zones.
I really wish 2 things would happen: 1) Implement use of equipment to clean the beaches. I lived for 3 months beachside in Naples, Florida and they had a machine pulled by a tractor that would comb the beach sand to collect trash, and 2) a Co-Op society (or private owned supermarket) would open a euro style food market / food hall & restaurant stalls style on top the grocery overlooking a marina. ( Sorry, the Sultan Centre Shark -not sure if it is still is open – does not compare to what I envision above).
I completely agree with the beach combers. I don’t know why Kuwait doesn’t have these anyway – clean the beaches!! The poor little cleaner guys literally walk in the sand picking up just stuff on the top – but I don’t blame them…it is hard work and probably depressing to watch people just leave crap all over in general, and cleaning the beach with the little rake and shovel has got to be hard.
Yes, i really hate the beach liter. I am so worried that some little kid or anyone actually will walk on something sharp that was left as trash as most go barefoot seaside. I agree w/you and low wage labour shouldn’t discourage smarter methods of getting the job done – that is actually more efficient. Have you ever seen those Afghani men digging trenches for cable by hand? There are machines available that do that job!
I just hope people stop being so disgusting and the beach side doesn’t become riddled with litter and wrappers and bags and all kinds of littler all the time just like when McDonalds had it.
I was really wondering what the odd-looking building was going to be, I thought it was going to be that large P.F. Chang’s I heard was being planned.
