Old Photos of Kuwait (1960s)

A friend recently shared an instagram account with me that contained a lot of cool old photos of Kuwait, many which I hadn’t seen before. The account is called @badshaiji and the guy doesn’t mention the source of the photos, but I don’t think they’re his since I’ve seen a few in other places. I also think he converts a lot of colored photos to black and white for aesthetic reasons.

From all the photos on his account, three stuck out for me. The two above are from 1969 and of seaside casinos (basically coffee shops or social clubs not gambling casinos) that were located in Salmiya on Blajat street. I had never seen these before nor did I know they had existed. The third photo below is of a music shop on Fahad Al Salem street dated 1961. If you want to check out a lot more photos like this then check out the Instagram account @badshaiji

There was once a Golden Beach Hotel somewhere near the Seif Palace (but on the opposite side) once.

……but I don’t think there are his since I’ve seen

but i don’t think THEY are his

Regarding the music shop picture, brought many memories, I remember going with my teenage aunt in the early 70s I was like 5 but still remember the smell of vinyl records, the store was in Fahaheel in the location of the current new Al Kout mall, she was a die hard fan of Tom Jones. The store owner is an old Christian Lebanese gentleman who ran the store with his daughters,
She is 70 now and still a fan of Abu Jones as she calls him.

What’s remarkable about all of these photos is just how spotlessly clean and neat Kuwait appears in all of them.
Cleanliness is the price you pay for sub-contracting and outsourcing of your municipality services and compounded some more by reckless consumption and an altered demographic. Sad but true.

My Dear Mark
First, I Would Like to Thank You for your Concern and Mentioning My Instagram Account.
Second thing I want to answer your question “the guy doesn’t mention the source of the photos” the source of the photos are the ministry of information photography archives which I also using them to produce a daily TV program.
You also said “I don’t think they’re his since I’ve seen a few in other places” I want you to be sure all the photos are mine and what you see in other places are copied from my account without mention which forced me lately to put my log on them
The last part “also think he converts a lot of colored photos to black and white” believe me I have never done that and I will not do such a thing like that because I don’t need to do that and all the photos I used are original 100%
Thank you again Mark
Hope you keep following my posts
