I am not a big fan of diet drinks but I have them every now and then to help ease the guilt, like when I am having the 2,400 calorie spaghetti and meatballs at Macaroni Grill, I feel more comfortable eating it when I am drinking a diet coke. The problem with Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi is that they taste like crap. I tried Pepsi Max when that came out and I also really hated it since it tasted worse than the diet versions. A week ago though I decided to try Coca Cola Zero since it looked cool and now its the only Coke I’ve been drinking. I don’t know what the advantages are, I don’t know how many callories it has or whatever, I just know it has no sugar and that has to be better than the regular coke. Now best part is that it tastes like the regular coke if not better. They might as well have replaced the regular coke with zero and I doubt anyone would have noticed.

KitKat Senses
Last month I read on Memoirs of A Kuwaiti-Chick about a version of KitKat called Senses. Today while I was checking out the chocolate corner in Shamiya supermarket I spotted them and decided to take two to try and now I think I found my new favorite chocolate. The taste is a mixture between KitKat and Kinder’s Bueno which also has a hazelnut cream filled chocolate wafer. Downside is they cost 450fils a bar but its worth it. The chocolate section at Shamiya has a lot of imported stuff which is cool and right next to it there is the gourmet section which also has a ton of stuff not available elsewhere. If you don’t know where Shamiya Coop is its near the Sheraton roundabout and here is it on google maps. [MAP]
The Anti-Energy Drink
While drinks like Red Bull give you energy, Drank works the other way round. Drank is an anti-energy drink which relaxes you and makes you sleepy. Sounds like my kind of drink! [Link]
Hot Dog Cooker
This looks like the perfect way to cook hot dogs at home. I wonder if I could find something like this in Kuwait since I don’t feel like ordering it off the Internet. [Link]
Soda Pop!
A really cool photo set of soda bottles, cans and logos dating from the 60s through to the 80s. Coca Cola launched their classic bottle awhile back but someone should tell 7up to do the same thing. Their can design pictured above from the 70s is extremely funky. [Link]
The 9KG Burger
Thats HUGE! [Pictures]
Bavarian Food
One of my favorite things about Munich was the food. I was eating non stop through out the day since their food is very hard to resist although it would be easy for the majority of you since most of their dishes are pork based. I took pictures of my dishes whenever I could and if you click on continue below you could see some of them. As you can see most are sausages with potato salad. The one above was taken at the Augustiner Beer Garden.
Dean & Deluca – Kuwait
A reader of the blog sent an email to inform me that Dean & Deluca will be opening in Kuwait before the end of the year. According to the reader the upscale gourmet food grocery store will be brought to Kuwait by Alshaya and that they are working overtime to try and have the place opened by Q4 of this year. I don’t know the accuracy of this information but if its true it would be something to look forward to. Alshaya launched the Dean & Deluca Cafe in Dubai early this year but they haven’t opened their store yet.
Thanks SJM MUKI
Häagen-Dazs Fondue
Looks like its going to a food day on this blog. I hate it when I post about a certain topic and then by coincidence end up with a number of posts around the same topic, in this case food. A reader (SJM MUKI) just emailed me the flyer of the new fondue at Häagen-Dazs here in Kuwait and from the picture it looks reallllly good. According to the flyer the fondue costs KD7.500 and is enough for 4 people.
A reader in the forum (aglocogirl) just posted pictures of the Beef Festival menu at Cheeburger Cheeburger in Souk Salmiya. I already reviewed them when they first opened and their burgers were pretty ok but now with the Beef Festival they’ve heavily discounted their prices which makes them more tempting.
20 ounce burger was KD3.250 and now is KD1.750
3/4lb burger was KD2.450 and now is KD1.450
1/2lb burger was KD2.250 and now is KD1.250
1/3lb burger was KD2.050 and now is KD1.150
5.5 ounce burger was KD1.750 now is KD1.050
That prices are pretty cheap specially for the super large 20 ounce burger which I think I have to try. Oh and I haven’t forgotten about The Burger Challenge, I should start passing by more burger joints again very soon.
Bakdash Ice Cream
I passed by Bakdash when I was in Syria. It was impossible to resist, the ice cream just looked delicious. What surprised me the most was the amount of traffic they had, They were serving ice cream non-stop!
Lebanon: Varouj Restaurant
Varouj is an incredible Armenian restaurant located in a tight backstreet of Bourj Hammoud in Lebanon. The place is tiny on the inside with only 4 tables and the restaurant is run by a father and son, the son cooks while the father takes care of the guests. Anyone who’s watched the Seinfeld episode with the soup Nazi will feel right at home in Varouj because the father is Lebanon’s version of the soup Nazi.
What makes Varouj unique other than the really good food is the character of the father. We were five people having lunch and we were ordering the cold appetizers when the father decided we had enough appetizers and walked away. He wouldn’t let us order any more. Then when he felt it was time he came to us and asked us what hot dishes we wanted and while we were ordering he again told us that he thought we had enough and walked off. We wanted frogs for example but he refused telling us we already had enough dishes. Then later he even decided to cancel one of our other dishes. So we ordered frogs again and again but he kept telling us we didn’t need it. The table behind us called the father and told him they wanted some soujouk and makanek (kinds of sausages) and he told them not now later. Its crazy. He also wouldn’t remove a dish from the table unless it was wiped clean.
The food was delicious, we ordered: hommos, moutabal, fattoush, loubyeh, batata harra, labneh, tongue, spleen, kibeh neyeh, sheep balls, little birds, chicken liver, chicken wings, basterma, soujouk and makanek. All the dishes were the best I have ever tasted.
The way everything is priced is also interesting. Basically nothing is priced and there is no menu. You go in, you order what you want and in the end he will tell you how much you need to pay and you don’t even get a receipt. Our bill came out exactly 100$ but according to my friend if we had ordered less or more the bill would have still come out the same. If you are planning a trip to Lebanon this is a place you need to try if you want a taste of local cuisine. The best way to find the place is to ask a taxi driver in Bourj Hammoud to take you or give the father a call on 03-882933
Ice, Ice Baby
Who knew there were so many different kinds of ice cubes. The one pictured above is called the Orchid Ice and actually contains an orchid flower inside. When you get to the page just click “next” on the top to flip between the different ice cubes. [Link]
the hummingbird bakery
One of the places I was looking forward to visiting while I was in London is the hummingbird bakery. Some say that most of the cupcake stores in Kuwait were based on the hummingbird bakery, that might be true but I haven’t tried their cupcakes. My main reason for visiting the hummingbird bakery is for their Chocolate Devil’s Food Cake which is just incredible. Sadly there are only two hummingbird bakeries in London so there is very little chance that a branch will open up in Kuwait. If you ever visit London make sure you pass by the hummingbird bakery and then make sure you visit Ben’s Cookies for the best cookies in London.
A friend just told me that Trader Vic’s is opening on the Gulf Road right after Kuwait Towers and Ruby Tuesday. There are 3 small buildings that were just built on the sea side and one of them supposedly is Trader Vic’s. Will try and double check this myself tomorrow.
Update: I can now confirm that Trader Vic’s is in fact opening on the Gulf Road near Ruby Tuesday in front of Mais Alghanim.
