The hacker group Anonymous released a video a few days back stating they were planning to attack a number of countries including Kuwait on June 20th. Why? Because oil is sold with the dollar and Saudi Arabia has betrayed Muslims with their cooperation. No idea what their strike would encompass but most likely they’ll be bringing down all the oil related websites. Check out the video they released above. [YouTube]

The Regional Center for Development of Educational Software (ReDSOFT) have created a pretty amazing iOS App which allows you to download all the books for all grades required by of the Ministry of Education in Kuwait. You just have to tell the App which class you’re in and then you will then have access to all the books that are required by the Ministry for that year. The App is called “كتابي” but if you don’t have an Arabic keyboard setup on your iPhone or iPad then you can search for “nader marafie” in the App store and you’ll find the app or even better here is the direct link to the App Store [Link]

The weather this past week has been fantastic, it was sunny and the skies were a deep blue with very little wind. It’s really the best time for outdoor activities including jet skiing.
If you’ve never jet skied before it’s really very easy and not complicated at all. Jet ski has just two buttons and one leaver. The buttons are for starting and shutting down the engine while the lever is for accelerating. To slow down the jet ski you just let go of the lever. You don’t need to know how to balance a jet ski or anything of the sort, you just sit on it and pull the leaver and that’s pretty much it.

There are various locations on the Gulf Road where you can rent jet skis from and they all basically follow the same guidelines. You need to keep your Civil ID with them while the jet ski is out with you and you also have to sign a waiver/contract. Some locations offer lockers to put your stuff in others don’t. I would recommend you keep everything in the car anyway and then either leave your keys with them so they don’t get wet or get a small waterproof pouch to take with you. Some jet ski renters also give you a cheap Casio watch to wear so you know how much time you’ve been out for and when you need to be back by. Most also have a tap/shower to rinse off once you’re done.

The cost of renting a jet ski is KD10 for 30 minutes or KD15 for 1 hour. If you’re interested in renting one below are some Google Map links to various locations along the Gulf Road. If you’re planning to take pictures make sure your phone has a water poof case.

Capital Punishment in Kuwait

There has been a lot of debate about the pros and cons of capital punishment in the past few days which is why I wanted to take the time to explain capital punishment in the Kuwaiti law.
What is the procedure before getting capital punishment?

So an accused gets three trials, when he gets a guilty verdict in a trial he HAS to appeal. If he doesn’t appeal then the public prosecution will appeal the case. Before being sentenced with capital punishment an accused has to be proven guilty three times in three different trials made up of different judges. After three different guilty verdicts, the accused get sentenced to capital punishment. But, even then, capital punishment would not be executed unless the highest authority signs off on the sentence.
Who is exempted from capital punishment?

What are the crimes that you would get capital punishment for?
The below apply to everyone, Kuwaiti or non Kuwaiti, visa or no visa, pretty or ugly… as long as you committed the crime in Kuwait.
– Murder, deliberate + premeditated by il will (Article 150 with a def in Article 151)
– Any person that kidnaps another person using force or threat or with the intent to kill, hurt or rape (Article 180)
– Sexual intercourse with a female without her consent and the accused was related to the girl, or was her teacher, her caretaker or her servant. (Article 186)
– Sexual intercourse with a female with her consent but the female is not mentally stable and the accused knew this or if the girl was under 15 years of age. In both cases the accused was related to the girl, or was her teacher, her caretaker or her servant. (Article 187)
– Capital punishment found in other Kuwaiti laws like national security crimes (treason for example)
– For growing, selling, buying or importing or exporting drugs the accused might get capital punishment. But, if you add any of the following points as well then the accused will get capital punishment:
1) The drug is cocaine, heroine, Acetyldihydrocodeine and Codeine
2) You’re a public employee
3) Used a minor to help with the drug crime
4) Its the accused 2nd time convicted of either growing, selling, buying or importing or exporting drugs
The above is based on the Kuwaiti law and not my opinion. If there is anything that isn’t clear leave a comment below and I will try to clarify it.

Alcohol Prices for Kuwait – 2013
Al Qabas newspaper Al Shahid released a list of alcohol prices in Kuwait. I guess they want you to be aware of the prices so your dealer doesn’t try to rip you off. If your dealer is overcharging you, refer them to this list.

For non-Kuwait residents, KD1 is around $3.5
The Embarakiya Floor Lamps

These are just too damn creepy. They’re by Kuwait based Al-Hamad Design:
Each of the lamps features a touch sensor in the hand with three dimmer settings. Shake hands and the lamp will turn on. The men include a built-in-speaker in the torso.

Check them out on the Al-Hamad Design website [Here].

Arabian Business released their “100 most powerful Arab women 2013” list and 11 Kuwaiti women made the top 100. This year the most powerful Kuwaiti women was Suad Al Humaidi who came in at number 10. The Wall Street Journal released a chart showing the price of the Starbucks Grande Latte in various cities around the world. The most expensive location to get one turned out to be Oslo where the price of the Grande Latte was around KD2.800. I was curious to see how Kuwait faired so I passed by Starbucks and checked the price. A Grande Latte in Kuwait is KD1.250 and when I converted that to US Dollars using the NBK website, it turned out to be $4.38. That is the same price as a Grande Latte in Dublin. [Article]
Update: I just found out the price of the Grande Latte is actually KD1.500 which translates to $5.25 and puts the price higher up the list. The Starbucks I visited in the morning was located at the NBK head office and I guess that Starbucks has cheaper prices hence the KD1.250 I was quoted. Below is the updated chart.

World’s cheapest petrol prices

This is one list where I’m glad we’re at the top of. I also can’t believe the gas prices in Venezuela are THAT cheap. If I lived in Venezuela I could fill up my FJ’s gas tank for just 250fils! That’s a lot cheaper than bottled water…
1. Venezuela US$0.06
2. Saudi Arabia US$0.45
3. Kuwait US$0.81
4. Egypt US$1.14
5. UAE US$1.77
6. Iran US$2.15
7. Nigeria US$2.34
8. Malaysia US$2.36
9. Mexico US$3.22
10. United States US$3.29

Kuwait City Museums
Over the weekend I decided to pass by three museums with a friend of mine. All three museums are located right next to each other so you could cover them all in under two hours. There’s actually a fourth museum right next to the Maritime Museum which you could visit as well, the Modern Art Museum, but they were closed when I passed by.

Maritime Museum
Our first stop was the Maritime Museum which is located opposite Souk Sharq. It’s easy to spot since they have to large wooden ships parked outside with a miniature light house [Google Maps]. The museum is pretty nicely designed on the inside, it’s two floors and pretty modern looking with a ship like structure being the main inspiration to the design. They have a lot of sea related items on display from old tools used to build the ships to fishermen gear. Really worth checking out.

Here is their visiting hours:
Monday to Saturday
8:30AM to 12:30PM and 4:30PM to 8:30PM
Friday
4:30PM to 8:30PM

Dickson House Cultural Centre
Further up the road was the Dickson House Cultural Centre. The Dickson House served as offices and residences for the British Political Agents in the early 1900’s. I didn’t like this place much since there wasn’t much to see inside and the whole interior was refurbished but not to the original state. The outdoor yard in the back on the other hand was nice and the Dickson House caretaker Fayez, whom one of my readers nicknamed the Tour Guide Nazi (in reference to Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi) was a really interesting character. I actually enjoyed sitting on the bench in the yard chatting with him more than the actual tour. [Google Maps]
Here is their visiting hours:
Monday to Saturday
8:30AM to 11:30AM and 4:30PM to 8:30PM
Friday
4:30PM to 8:30PM

Amricani Cultural Centre
The final destination was the Amricani Cultural Centre which is located across the street from the House of Parliament. The Amricani was originally the American Mission Hospital and just recently got renovated and opened to the public. Lectures and exhibitions take place there occasionally but when I passed by there wasn’t anything going on. They do have a 20 minute movie you can watch about the history of the hospital but personally I’d go there just to see their freaky looking display. It’s a small corner showing how the hospital used to look like when it first opened but it really looks like a scene from the movie SAW. Definitely worth checking out. They didn’t have opening hours displayed and I couldn’t find anything on their website but my guess it’s similar to the other two museums above. [Google Maps]

Monday to Saturday
8:30AM to 11:30AM and 4:30PM to 8:30PM
Friday
4:30PM to 8:30PM
All the museums above are free of charge to enter.
Menus Restaurant Complex

The Menus Complex is located in Abu Halifa and by the looks of it will be opening pretty soon. As of now the complex will house the following restaurants:
Ribs and Rumps
Elevation Burger
Zaatar w Zeit
Lorenzo
Millions of Milkshakes
Nestle Toll House
Stone Grill
Dip n Dip

The first restaurant that will be opening at the complex is Elevation Burger (pictured above) and they’ll be opening this coming Tuesday. Compared to Spoons this complex seems to have more parking space and less traffic in the general vicinity so that should make it more convenient. Menus is located right after Hilton (if Hilton is on your right hand side). Here is the location on [Google Maps]
