I just found out about this and think its amazing news for Villa Moda and all the other local start ups. It just goes to show that great local ideas are great ideas anywhere in the world.
Majed al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti lifestyle retailer known in the fashion world as the “Sheik of Chic,” has teamed up with the government of Dubai to create a global brand development strategy for his Villa Moda enterprise.
The Dubai International Finance Center, or DIFC, was to announce Monday that it had taken a majority investment in the multibrand high fashion retailer, where Sabah will remain as chairman and creative director. The exact amount of the investment was not disclosed.
I think Dubai is a perfect partner for Villa Moda but its depressing because Villa Moda is a Kuwaiti based idea and operation and it would have meant more to have Kuwait finance Villa Moda. But I guess its not only about the money, Dubai have a vision, Kuwait’s vision is… Dubai? [Link]
Thanks Mish!
An anonymous reader emailed me a link to this article. It seems its confirmed, Kuwait is going with Dodge Chargers which is something everyone thought would happen since the alternatives weren’t as practical. [Link]
The Animal Friends League in Kuwait recently rescued 15 dogs that were living outdoors on a farm in Kebd. The dogs were never taken indoors not even during the extreme summer heat. AFL have some pictures and more information on their website plus a YouTube video. Fourteen of the dogs were Saluki’s and are now being prepared to be transported to the USA where they will be handed over to the Saluki Tree of Life Alliance. They are seeking donations to help with this and you can get more information about that on their website [Here]
I also found an article on the Saluki Tree of Life Alliance website on this rescue and on other rescues in Kuwait. The article contains a slightly graphic picture. [Link]
If you would like to help them out with donations please call them on 7001622
The guy pictured above is married to 86 woman and has 170 children from them. Thats 256 names and faces he has to remember, if I was him I would probably make everyone wear name tags. [Link]
This is very shocking and sad news. [Link]
A Qatari Sheikh sent his Lamborghini by plane all the way to London for an oil change and back. It sounds fishy because if there isn’t a Lambo dealer in Qatar why didn’t he just send the car to Dubai or Kuwait? [Link]
Thanks Rashid
A 22 year old male died when he lost control of his Mercedes SLR and crashed in Qatar. Jalopnik has photos of whats left of the car which isn’t much. [Link]
The shawerma place called Weekend that is located in front of AUK in Salmiya got demolished. Supposedly the owner of the building demolished it so that he could drive off the owners of the shop. You can read more about it on the Al Rai Alaam newspaper but its in Arabic. I wasn’t a fan of Weekend, I prefered Malek Al 3aseer which was right next to it but it still sucks. They are doing the same with the shops in old Salmiya. For example Family Bookshop is still open but you can barely get to it. The entrances are blocked by rocks and sand because the owner of the building is trying to drive them out. [Link]
Thanks LunarDream
On my way to work today there was a demonstration in front of the House of Parliament. I didn’t have my camera with me so I couldn’t take pictures but the demonstrators where of both sexes and I would say young and aged around 18-28. They were all wearing white t-shirts and a lot of them were holding white umbrellas. Unlike most of the demonstrations I see every so often on my way to work, this one was getting a lot of coverage by journalists. Some of the signs they were holding were in Arabic while others in English (for international media?) and I think they were talking about their voices being heard and their constitution rights… My memory is really bad so I couldn’t memorize any of the banners. Anyone know what its all about and why the white umbrellas?
Two days ago the most beautiful goat in the world contest was held in Saudi Arabia. The goat pictured above won first place in what has to be the strangest beauty contest I’ve ever heard of. If you follow the link you can see more pictures from this event, doesn’t anyone else think these are some of the weirdest looking goats? [Link]
I just heard that the former Crown Prince and Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah has passed away. I am trying to find some news about this online but as of this post no online news site has posted about it.
Update: The news has started appearing online. [Link]
