The Ice Cream Guys are Back

I don’t think I’ve seen any KDD ice cream guys yet but the Petra ones are back out on the roads. Going through their products list, I don’t think I’ve ever had Petra in my life, maybe back in the 80s when I was a kid so I don’t remember, but definitely not in my adult life.

I’ve always been a KDD guy.

I worked with and for KDD for many many years in my past. Indeed KDD quality is unsurpassed. I remember many times when they would dump complete containers of product just because there was a small variation in the taste or some hint of a potential problem. Also it is unbelievable the amount of testing and quality control that goes into each and every process (I mean they even monitor/limit) how fast the delivery truck is moving and how frequently they stop and open the back and for how long, so that things like yoghurt don’t get spoilt. Same for the fresh milk they get from the farms, so much testing. I hope the KDD ice cream guys come back as well.

They use both powdered milk and fresh milk (depending on availability, seasonality and quality). I distinctly remember the fresh milk silver trucks coming to Sabhan daily.

I work in corporate sales for IHG and I remember meeting a marketing personnel of KDD a couple of years ago. Since she was born in Kuwait as well, we spoke for an hour on our childhood foods. She confirmed KDD uses powdered milk and she is amazed by how good almarai milk is. We both agreed on how the KDD ice cream sandwich is like the perfect ice cream. kdd is now brining up new healthier products (power fruit juices with no added sugar)

amazing that they care so much about their product, and then it gets to the Co-Op and they just leave fresh yogurt and fresh milk at the door in 55 degrees for hours, until one of the packing guys gets the will to pack it in the fridge. had countless encounters at my local small Co-Op where i tell them to stop leaving the dam milk in the heat outside.

Kdd or Petra… Whether you feel like an icecream or not… I’d ask humbly that everyone stop next to them and atleast get a bottle(s) of water. It’ll quench your thirst and help these poor guys working on this inhumanely hot weather with some revenue.

I love kdd products actually they r way better than igloo products I compared igloo n kdd Chocolate ice cream n to b honest with the amount of money , kdds lulu ice cream was creamier tastier n chocolaty , London dairy is too hyped few ice creams r better with the brand tag

Are these owned and run by KDD or Petra? I always think about them, sometimes they are stationed way out on the highway. I wonder if they use dry ice in those carts.

The KDD Shuwaikh branch was the ice cream factory before, and the Ice Cream guys would pick up products and spread out to sell them. I think most were KDD owned and the guys were KDD employed, but I’m really not sure about this. I was responsible for the post-war innovation and automation of the factory, but that part was actually running pretty efficiently, so I had no reason to touch it.

i love to support these guys. i always get a bottle of water and a ice cream sandwich, i usually pay 1KD and tell him to keep the change.

I dont know why, the water from those carts is always the best….its so cold, sometimes a little frozen.

They have a decent frozen yogurt in mango and berry flavours, low on calories as well, 90 something calories.

Choco Rico KDD ice cream stick……that is the best, If you are dairy free KDD has some frozen ice lollies that are awesome, even though I battle to open the wrapper on those πŸ˜‹

maybe you are out of the country. but during all this lockdown stuff and corona going on, they were away for like 2 months.

Anyone remember the Rocket popsicle..or the Spaceship Vanilla lolly covered with grape sherbet?? They are still around from prior the invasion and in todays heat are a godsend. My wife and I are Kuwait born and I try to purchase as much of these for her from the local grocers.

Hmmn..Petra ice-cream is not too bad either.. Specially their sandwich ice creams

So this is totally off subject but prior the invasion in the 80s there used to be a type of chocolate milk that used to be available in one of those half diamond tetra packs made by Kuwait Danish Dairy back in the day (that’s what they were known as prior the controversy.. Long story there ). Anyway the chocolate milk though at that time was out of this world..better than the KDD chocolate milk available now. So much so that we would actually suck on the tetra packs.. πŸ˜‚ I imagine not a good idea though now with Covid and all

I’m pretty sure that the recipe for KDD chocolate milk did not change much (if at all) since the 80s, regardless of the packaging. I know they introduced like a richer chocolate version, which probably got dropped because no one can compete with their original version, not even themselves. Wish we could have them here in Turkey,

KDD Chocolate Milk Rules …….

That being said I remember those tri-color Rocket Popsicle..and Spaceship Vanilla lollies;

Used to call them the shuttle lolly owing to the space shuttle pic on the wrapper . My fav though has always been the Lulu Stick and the Silver Cones. cant get enough of them .. would eat a whole box by myself if only my wife would allow me to πŸ˜‰

Yup those were the ones .. I liked Space Shuttle / Columbia better than Blitz…

I wonder they went all uniform on the names and packaging .. I like the old packaging too.. It was better when they had the pictures of the little boy and girl in traditional dress made it less commercial and more authentic

Yeah I remember that post in 2011.. reading it got me all depressed again … gonna stop by Shuwaikh and pick me up a couple of cartons of Lulu and Silvers.. πŸ˜‰

try their square not sure what it’s called i love everything KDD but the square from patra is perfect

I miss my Mehaan ice cream and the KDD strawberry ice lolly very much.

Also I used to have a knee trembling weakness (still do) for the New Supermarket back in the day when it used to be housed right next to the GPO where Joy Alukkas now stands….or shuttered as the case may be. They would stock all manner of European products and there was something about the smell of that store which no other supermarket or co-op in Kuwait has hence, been able to recreate.

I still ache and brood over the loss of the New Supermarket in Kuwait especially their presence on Salem Mubarak street adjacent to the Sahara pharmacy.

Ummm that’s not where the New Supermarket was located. New Supermarket was located adjacent to where MRG is now, basically out of the frame to the right of the building in this photo https://248am.com/images/goingdown.jpg

The building in that photo got demolished, it’s where Swan Lake, Barakat and Fay used to be located. The ugly MRG building is there now.

Here is the location on Google Maps of where the New Supermarket used to be https://goo.gl/maps/8mHPvecZtCAmGBnR7

oh wait, i just noticed u mentioned the correct location at the end of your comment, was there another new supermarket somewhere else?

Yes there used to be a New Supermarket in town close to Souk Al Watya. I remember it for its air con which used to be on super blast all the time something I actually enjoyed as a kid : )

Damn I don’t even remember that one 😳 I’ll have to ask my mum about it, how old r u out of curiosity? I’m guessing older than me? Cuz I’m 42 and new supermarket I think closed down mid 80s, maybe 88 tops in Salmiya?
