How to get a physical copy of your driving license

A couple of weeks ago the Ministry of Interior announced that expats are now able to get a physical driving license printed for a KD 10 fee. A lot of people were asking what the process was, and thanks to the Reddit user InsecureInflux, there are now instructions. Here are the steps he took to get his physical driving license:

  • Go to your respective Muroor.
  • Visit the typing section and request a physical license.
  • Provide your civil ID and license; they’ll type out a form for you (fee: KD 1).
  • Take the form to one of the counters inside; they’ll give you a paper with your license details.
  • Take both papers to the stamping officer; pay KD 10 for the stamp.
  • Obtain the manager’s signature on the stamped papers.
  • Submit the signed papers at one of the counters.
  • Wait approximately 10–15 minutes to receive your printed license.

I just picked up mine yesterday from Ahmadi traffic dept office following the exact same procedure. Only difference in my case was the 15 minutes waiting time has become 1.5 hours! Perks of visiting govt offices on sundays or thursdays! 😀

why cant we just pay the 10 kd online and go and collect it from the self service kiosk itself? saves a lot of time and omits all the manual processes mentioned.

Thanks Mark. I can confirm that the steps listed above is the current process. I have got my physical driving license last week from Ahmadi muroor following the same.

Yes thanks Mark ..Even I go mine physical liscence but the employees make mistakes when printing the card ..Before you leave please check all your details carefully.

i had that issue with my car registration. My 91 Suburban has silver and dark grey listed in car registration. Been like that i guess from 91. Went to get car registration done guy is like it should say grey and red. Went got all the paper work done, all the approvals done to change color on car registration. Brought them the paper, they issued new car registration with the old colors. Guy was like oops, just leave it for now and do it again next year.

Can anyone help me with the process of applying for an international driving license in Kuwait? I’m traveling soon and was hoping to rent a car during my trip, now that physical cards can be printed.

Just apply for it online, they deliver in 3 days. Also most first world countries don’t require international license since our license is in English.

Sorry Mark, a friend of mine had IDP and he was denied a car in the first world USA and was asked to show the physical card, this was with enterprise rentals

Read what I wrote. I said you don’t need an international driving license for first world countries because our driving license is in English. You can rent a car in the US using just your Kuwaiti license. I’ve done it like at least half a dozen times on both west coast and east coast. AND I’ve even been pulled over and ticketed for speeding and my Kuwaiti license wasn’t an issue for the cop.

IDP is not exactly a license, it’s a driving permit supported by your driving license. For US, IDP is not mandatory, but the physical license is. I had taken IDP from Kuwait for US but no one asked for it while picking up the rental.

As I read in some reddit forums, they ask for IDP in some European countries like Italy. But from my personal experience, nobody asked for IDP but the physical license card (Southern Italy, Amalfi). One of my friends was denied Hertz rental car in Netherlands as he didn’t have the KW license card, even though it was prepaid. In short, I agree with what Mark said, physical card is more important and must have than IDP.

my mother’s liecense expired two days back first they asked 15kd which i paid then another 5kd for renewal. Once everything is done the message is coming up saying visit any kiosk to print your liecense. i thought 15kd was late fees but now i guess 10kd is for printing card and 5kd for late fees and that now no need to go to muroor. not sure about this can anyone guide me please

I received the same message to visit any kiosk to print the license when I renewed the license back in february. When I went to kiosk location to pickup the card, the person sitting there told me it’s not for expats and you won’t get a physical card. I tried anyway, only to receive an error message, something like ‘no pending transactions’. Finally, I collected the card this month only from Traffic dept following the procedure shared in the above article. So, I believe the message to collect the card from kiosk is a default response from the system which doesn’t work in reality.

Did you go to any traffic department office or your governorate. A friend told me even i live in Hawally I should go to ahmadi . Just wanted to confirm which office you used. Thanks

As an expat, can we visit the traffic department in the morning, or is there some segregation or time set for expats?

You will be directed to the muroor where your license was first issued. This happened to me. I didn’t get it from the muroor of the governorate I live in. So please be ready for that too.

is there an allotted time frame for expats who would want to apply for the physical card at the muroor
