Zain 5G Review – One Year Later

It’s been a year since I first tried 5G and so I wanted to post a quick update on how it’s been. Since my initial review last year, a lot more people have now gotten 5G and the prices have dropped considerably. When 5G first came out we got it at the office and our monthly fee was KD45. When I got mine last year, I was paying KD19 for 1TB. Earlier this year prices dropped even further and so Zain called me up and told me that they were changing my package from KD19 for 1TB to KD19 for 4TB. A cool gesture considering on two occasions I had exceeded my 1TB bandwidth before the end of the month.

But, because there are now a lot more people on the network, the speeds aren’t what they used to be. When I initially reviewed 5G I was getting speeds of 650-750Mbps on average with the occasional 1.0-1.2Gbps. For the past 6 months, the highest speed I’ve seen is 390Mbps which I was actually surprised to see this morning when I ran the speed test for this post. In full transparency, that was actually the fastest speed I achieved over a number of tests this morning with the lowest coming out to 290Mbps which is close to the speeds I’ve been getting recently. On CITRA, the highest speed I got was 366Mbps.

The fastest connection I could get where I live before 5G was 28Mbps with Zain Beam. So although I’m not getting the 600+ speeds I used to get, I’m still getting speeds 100x 10x faster than my previous connection. I think as long as it stays around 300Mbps I’m good, if it drops down to the 100s I’d still be ok I guess, just annoyed because I used to get 700Mbps. According to Open Signal real-world download speeds, the average 5G connection speed in Kuwait is 185Mbps (one of the telecoms must be killing the curve) so I’m above average. Kuwait actually has the 6th fastest 5G connection speeds in the world according to the same data.

So do I still recommend 5G? Yup, 100% especially with the current prices (10KD for 1TB). So if you’re still on 4G it’s definitely worth upgrading.

Tempting..
I will need 5G when i get a ps5 to download games.
Now i consume an average of 600GBs.
I download in my mobile and stream from small internet router.

Just checked Zain’s offers,, looks like i missed the unlimited data 5G for KD15! It’s for 20 now.

From my personal experience 5G is the best option for faster downloads . I had mine for a year almost STC and used to have incredible speed but now 350 Mbps is the limit with high jitter ranging 5-20ms depending on the time of the day.
On the other hand, you should be aware that your latency will be heavily affected and you will have major inconsistencies when playing games online. I consider myself an avid Warzone player on ps4 and my ping these days ranges 150-200 which was not the case back in DEC until Mar.(70-95)

As soon as i was contacted by the ISP informing me that i will be upgraded to 1TB i knew things are turning to the worst for my gaming experience (downloads i cannot complain)

My brotherly advice, if you are getting the 5G for gaming purposes like i did, please reconsider having fiber instead speeds will be lower but stability is unbeatable with no flactuation in ping.

Hey Mark .. guess u have much experience with 5 g so need to ask u.. I live in Salmiya block 10 and speeds are terrible 😔… I have zain bolt 818 and viva bolt also .. evening times speed is barely touching 5 Mbps .. viva hardly 2 mbps … when I contacted the respective providers their answer was I live in 9th floor that’s the reason !! So now if I upgrade to 5g from zain or viva u think I will get significant speed boost or I Wil regret for paying extra for nothing .. greatly appreciate ur input . Thanks

Thanks for the advice.
I don’t care about ms as i only play solo.
I want the 5g for the increased data cap.
Games are going to be huge.
And since im not getting the ps5 anytime soon, i can wait 🙂

I don’t think one carrier is killing the speed average, the speed they provide varies depending on the location I guess. I’ve had 5G for a while in Mishref with Zain and I never reached 300Mbps. Currently at night, since they advertised their July offer for unlimited 5G 2 year contracts, my speed drops to 20Mbps and sometimes it gets unusable so I go back to using my trusty DSL connection. During morning hours it’s good, I’ve just tested and I am getting 201Mbps in Mishref now.

That is interesting, I live in block 3 but I asked my friend who lives in block 4 (we both use Zain) and he is getting double my speed. I guess it depends on the tower you are connected too and how many people are on it at the same time.

The speed is weird in Mishref for the 5G.. especially block 1 near Naif restaurant where i live with 4g+ i get to 140-190 on speed test while 5G only goes to 210-280 and sometimes even lower. i guess the 5G coverage is not good although the data tower is very near to my house,

I’m right there with you in Mishref. The speed where we are is atrocious. There are huge blocks of the day that the network is unusable.

I have 5g with Ooredoo, about 15 months into 24 month contact. Prices are so much cheaper than when I signed up but no gesture from Ooredoo. I pay 35KD for 500gb.

Speeds average around 275Mbps where I am in Salmiya.

When I asked about changing/cancelling my contract to get a better deal they told me I would need to pay almost 400KD to end the contract! Pay back the discount they gave me on the monthly plan and pay for the router!! Can’t wait for this contract to end!

STC has 12 month 5G contracts.

10 KD/month for 1TB
13 KD/month for 2TB
18 KD/month for unlimited

You can check out the details in this link below
https://www.stc.com.kw/sites/stc/en/m/4G-5G

Zain only has 24 months, I’m sure because I asked their rep. Not sure about Ooredoo. Also I feel Ooredoo has higher rates than the other two for the same amount of data given.

Looks like these are SIM-only rates? Add KD 10 for the router and it goes into the weird pricing territory!

And what’s with the telcos hiding the early termination fees? Why cant that info be also displayed upfront?

Yea SIM only rates. Add any 5G router and it’s easily 18 KD and above.

Not only do they hide termination fees, they don’t even inform you the same when you actually sign up the contract unless you ask. Not a lot of people think or even know about it tbh.

+1 to that. I have been duped once by Zain (my very first contract in Kuwait) back in 2015. I was informed *after signing up* very casually that in case I cancel – even in the 23rd month – I will have to pay the FULL FIXED penalty fees (IIRC he cited KD 300).

I found that ridiculous TBH. I dont deny the penalty for braking the contract but it should be pro-rated and calculated on the remaining term of the contract rather than a princely fixed sum.

And the funny part is that Viva (now STC) follows the pro-rated policy in Bahrain but a fixed sum here.

Uhm, actually… STC does follow the prorated policy here in Kuwait but that is only if you’re a business customer. For eg. I have a 5G router with 1 TB data with 24 months commitment and I have already finished 8 months for that commitment and if I wanted to terminate the contract, the fee would be 40 KD (in my case). But I’m very happy with my 5G line as I get a stable 300-400 mbps download speed with an upload speed of 40-70 mbps. so theres no use of terminating my line -_-

THAT is the problem with the telcos here. They never pass on the benefit to old customers. That’s why I was surprised to read that Mark got 4TB data when Zain introduced new plans.

In my home country, they usually either match the data cap or speeds to new plans without even asking. I have seen this in many other markets. I used to think this is a standard customer retention protocol. I guess not!

Zain upgraded me from Initial 1TB for 19.5KD to 11TB for the same price without me asking them anything. This was done i presume after they had the 15Kd unlimited offer some months back.
Getting an average of 400Mpbs in Farwaniya block 6

I sometimes wonder if majority of the users actually end up consuming the 1TB *regularly*, let alone 11TB in a month!

I don’t think I exceed 1tb per month, most of the time I’m hovering close to 1TB and I don’t download much just software updates and streaming. But all it takes is for me to download a game or two on my console and I’ll easily pass 1TB. 11TB is just another way of saying unlimited bandwidth.

Yeah I know what you mean. I’d rather trade UNLIMITED data for better pricing / less restrictive contracts anyday. Even on my LTE plan, I barely manage to exceed 300GB what with endless streaming (music + data), FT/Duo and software updates. Of course, no gaming so I guess that’s what makes most of the difference.

You mean 10 plus 5 for the router.

I don’t think Zain has a without-router package. STC does if I recall correctly.

STC also had the CPE PRO2 router (which is the best available as of today), plus 11 TB for 15 p/m.

The same router in Zain is 17 p/m with only 1 TB. STC’s offer was way better for me and very happy since August! 😃

Actually I have found a sort of workaround Zain’s obligatory router contract. I took 12 months commitment with a cheap 4G router for 10 KD/month.
The value of the router is 12 KD incase I need to cancel I would pay 12 KD max and its reducing each month.

I have an unlocked 5G router and it works perfectly.

“The value of the router is 12 KD incase I need to cancel I would pay 12 KD max and its reducing each month.”

Which telco is this? Because this is the ideal method to apply the early termination penalty.

AFAIK, STC has a fixed cancellation fee (KD 150 if you cancel in the first 6 months and KD 75 if you cancel in months 6-12 for a 1 year commitment. I am sure the other two telcos follow somewhat similar logic.

Can I know which area you are in? And what’s the average speed you get? Specifically, does STC block/throttle specific data types (e.g. FaceTime)?

1. Anyone knows the early termination penalty for STC?

2. Which telco is offering 10KD for 1TB?

3. How is the 5G router in terms of range for a thick-concrete walled large apartment? With the 4G router (the big LAN port equipped Huawei model) I barely get it beyond my living room.

Answering your 2nd question as far as I know Zain provides 1TB 5G PLAN for 1 year commitment, with a 4G router, that means you have to purchase your 5G router from electronic shops like Excite, Best, or Eureka.

On your 3rd question, all routers are bad in Kuwait because we have concrete walls instead of wood like in the west. So they depend on signal bounces and suffer with a weak backhaul.

5G or 4G, makes no difference. The only solution if your router is farther away is 1) to use the 2.4 Ghz band ssid instead of 5ghz but then the quality suffers. 5Ghz is much better in terms of strength if the router has line of sight of the device and is near by. 2) get a repeater or redo it into a mesh network (more expensive) powerline routers are an option but suffer signal loss badly too.

In fact I have tried the range extender method but that doesnt work well either. Every hop reduces the speed by a percentage.

Mesh is the only method left for me to try now.

On another note, how is the range of the CPE Pro 2, given that its WiFi 6 based?

I’ve got my 5G router connected by Ethernet to my Nighthawk router and it’s not that bad, like I can barely tell there is a difference even with running a speed test.

Wifi 6 is an advantage only if your client laptop, phone, TV supports it. Most of the devices are wifi 5 (ac) and they can use the wifi 6 signals but without any added benefit. Yes your repeater will lead to a significant signal loss. Your only solution is to wire the repeater to the base router or move to a good mesh solution with a strong backhaul. Even there I suspect you’re better off wiring the satellites to the base. Good luck!

That’s the thing yeah.. when we got 5G at the start of the service no one was paying those prices so we had much fewer people connected to the same antennas I guess which made those initial speeds possible.. now for me in Salmiya I am starting to notice lower speeds and lags that weren’t happening just a few months back which is worrying because in a year or two everyone will be on the 5G network and then we will be back where we started with the 4G coverage that sucked..

I thought one of the benefits of a 5G network is that it solved that congestion but seems not

Same like Mesh, Zain upgraded my plan from 1TB@ 20KD to 11TB@ 20KD per month. Usual speed is 280Down and 50Up, that`s in Salmiya Block 3.

forgot to mention the above speeds are measured against servers in Europe & US. If I use the Fast app (Neflix) or direct test with local servers I get 490Down but still around 60Up.

I am presently in Ooredoo 4G contract, located in Salmiya Block 10, area 7. Speeds are pathetic, most of the time I stream through my STC mobile data. By march my internet contract will be done, I would like to know what are people’s experience with 5G network in salmiya block 10. What Telco provides better service?

You need to run a speed test several on the 3 providers (zain – viva – ooredoo) prior to decide which one is providing faster download and upload rates in
I believe this is the best practice you need to apply prior to commit a 1 or 2 year contract.

MY dear sir, how do you propose to do that without committing to a contract? Or buying an unlocked 5G router and still committing to a data-only SIM? No provider here offers try-before-you-buy plans.

Too many variables here! I need three friends + three different 5G data plans + all three should be using 5G phones.

Presently on my Note 10, its STC LTe and I get decent speeds, 40-60MBPs on a good day, lowest it went was 20MBPs. Ooredoo sucks royally, I have yet to test out zain. unfortunately I do not know anyone who has 5g

By the way, do any of the larger Huawei routers allow you to change DNS? Or are they locked too, same as the LTE ones?

I want to configure SmartDNS directly on the router.

I don’t think it’s locked, i just don’t think the routers have the option to change the DNS to begin with. Because the router allows you to set up a VPN on the router, but nowhere to edit the DNS so I have the DNS changed on my devices instead.

Sorry, that’s what I meant. Not locked, but rather inaccessible.

So how do you ‘activate’ the DNS if you set it on your devices? I am referring to that landing page (My Dashboard) on SmartDNS where you should see 4 green ticks if the configuration is correct. The specific field that I am talking about is ‘IP Activation’ which displays a red cross whenever the router is restarted or the IP changes from the ISP’s end.

Also, do you not use static routing? If yes, is that configurable on the CPE Pro 2 router? Or do you do that also on your devices?

Since I have configured DNS settings & static routes on my after-market (Netgear Nighthwak) router, I can manage the above ‘IP Activation’ easily via the browser.

Oh wow, you’re right. I found out how to do it. Check last comment here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Huawei/comments/dgzlmg/how_to_change_primary_dns_in_huawei_5g_cpe_pro/

So now i can see the DNS option
https://248am.com//images/2020/10/Screen-Shot-2020-10-22-at-6.27.41-PM.png

Nice, but I won’t set the DNS on router since if I want to watch UFC Arabia I need to show I’m in Kuwait so I tend to watch it on my iMac which doesn’t have the DNS set up.

Regarding your how to activate question. U set up the DNS say on your Apple TV and Amazon Fire Stick for example, u then just connect to the smart dns website and click on activate ip. Thats it. I don’t have to do it again unless my router restarts which it never does unless i tell it to and then i just reactivate ip again.

What code? Have you accessed and configured the DNS or is this based on hearsay?

Because there are several ways to use a “code” for the LTE routers but that is only for unlocking them (to use it on the SIM of any telco). I have done the same on my router. It still doesnt display any menu to change DNS or enter static routes.

Unless they have prepaid 5g plans, I ain’t trying it anytime soon. I’m happy with my prepaid 4g. No contracts, No BS termination penalties

I was waiting to see if I was the only one who felt that way. 4G, depending on your area, gives you 50-100Mbps easy. Plus you are not locked in. Also, 4G or 5G are both bad for live streaming because of drops caused by bad latency and jitter. The only contact I would invest in is the 1 year contract with Gulfnet and its fibre. 2ms latency and 50Mbps. Unless you are a serial downloader, I think that’s all you need really

Live, as in LIVE live. Netflix, Hulu, Pluto, are not live, they all buffer so you’ll get the occasional stutter but mostly good 4K streams.

Live TV streaming – Hulu Live TV, YouTube Live TV, zoom and Google meets, etc where content is real time do not do as well with mobile data. And I did not just say 5G, 4G too is bad with this.

Live streaming needs just 15-20Mbps, so you having 5G is not going to any difference from 4G. Point being with their high latency and jitter (check yours at speed.ix.kw), fibre works absolutely better and is cheaper with no need to sign 2 Yr contracts.

Now if you do not have fibre, well then you have no choice but then again 4G+ is better than 5G for most ppl. Contract and price wise

I had live TV, there is no issue streaming that either or playing video games. 5G isn’t like 4G.

You can see my jitter in the screenshot above but just ran it now and it’s even better:

Latency | وقت الاستجابه
13 ms
Jitter | تقطع
8 ms

Fiber is obviously gonna be better in latency but it’s a lot slower (100Mbps max), more expensive (61KD a month for 100Mbps vs 19KD a month for 300-600Mbps) and not available is 80% of Kuwait.

I tried Zain 5G with live TV a few months back. Speeds were at 450-600 Mbps. It made no difference, channels were buffering every now and then and it was irritating. So I switched to Fiber and got the 4G backup (even gulfnet goes down for a few mins every now and then in the week)

Btw yesterday an 8GB file took me less than 4mins on fiber. Why is it taking you 20mins on 5G with those speeds?

i think you’re taking my words out of context. i didn’t say 8gb file took 20 mins. If it took 4mins on your fiber connection it would mean it would take around 1 or 2 on 5G.

Yes, 4G+ LTE is great w.r.t. the speeds. Especially right now when many people have moved on to 5G so the bandwidth has freed up even more.

However the one thing I find it severely lacking is the multi-tasking capability (i.e. bandwidth). It doesn’t really allow me to watch YouTube or streaming TV (Netflix/Hulu et al) at the same time when my wife is chatting on FaceTime. And if there is a Zoom/MS Teams call, then its a royal mess.

I am guessing that is not at all the case with 5G?

Trying to post this again. Netflix, Hulu, etc are streaming platforms but not really live. The apps buffer and so you get the odd stutter but get mostly steady 4k streams over 4G and 5g.

4G or even 5G have notoriously high latency and jitter in Kuwait. Live TV such as Hulu live, YouTube TV, zoom and Google meets and above all gamers require uninterrupted realtime streams which only fiber provides without drops. Live TV streams also require just about max 20Mbps per stream and so having 5G is not going to make a difference – fiber would be best and if that’s not available, then 4G. Also Netflix and Hulu max out at 25Mbps so if you have 50+Mbps on 4G again that would suffice and theres no need for 5G. Unless you are a serial downloader and have no requirement for live TV, I see no need for 5G and locking yourself to a 2 year contract. I have a 50Mbps gulfnet connection and backup 4Kd/month 4G Zain connection.

Btw an 8GB file took me less than 4mins on my fiber. Why is it taking you so long on 5G with those speeds?

No it never was. It has bad latency. Go to speed.ix.kw and you’ll see what I mean. Fiber has 1-2ms latency and single digit jitter. I can guarantee you, 5G and 4G cannot beat that

But you’ll still need a 5G router! Unless you are willing to plonk down KD ~120-135 for the CPE/Pro 2 at one shot, the prepaid plan doesnt make much sense.

Prepaid 4G with a 4G Huawei or netgear router. No one really needs 5G unless they are a serial downloader and 4G coverage is bad in their area.

There are 3rd party unlocked 5g routers which costs around 60 kd and also if I get a new phone with 5g, I don’t think there will be any issues

Any users from Bneid Al Gar here? I want to know which provider is better here. I see that only STC and Zain have their 5G towers. But the location and orientation of my building is such that I dont get a good 4G/LTE signal from Zain (manages only about 12-16 Mbps) whereas STC in the living room gets me between 20-40 Mbps.

Wondering if I can base my 5G purchasing decision also on the above facts, or does that work on different logic?

They are mostly aggregating signals to get you 5G speeds. Stc rocks in Bneid AL Gar. You should consider buying a small external antenna box and drawing a cable to your house? It’s cheaper than locking yourself into 5G even at this point.

“Stc rocks in Bneid AL Gar”

Do you have any first-hand experience or source for this statement? Also are you aware if STC blocks/throttles specific data types (e.g. FaceTime)?

This is a good find. Shows what I suspected, theyve invested heavily in the Kuwaiti areas where all three operators are available. 2 and 1 operator in other areas. Makes sense since they buy more expensive contracts with phone plans

There isn’t any accurate database regarding coverage of telcos, and websites like these are based on minimal speedtests/ data which dosen’t provide accurate covergae info

it literally says zain has no 5g services in salmiyah, this entire page is about mark’s 5g experience in salmiyah. that info alone is proof that this is complete rubbish. not to mention they wrote that zain has no 5g services in rumaythia, Salwa and that only viva operates in mishrif. common sense says it completely inaccurate.

My Zain 5G must be coming to an end soon. Is there a way to check when it ends and I’ve also heard it’s almost impossible to end a telco contract in Kuwait. Can anyone advise?

My previous experience with Zain is in the shop they tell you to call them and when you call them they tell you to go into a shop.

I upgraded from an Ooredoo to a Zain 5G connection back in Aug this year, when they had the unlimited offer for 15 KD per month. Averaging about 200 Mbps in Salmiya. Loving the speed since I upgraded from 4G. Only pain point is that i need to keep restarting the router at least once a day.

I love how Internet posts gets the most comments. If only Kuwait had decent fibre infrastructure we would be surfing the web with low latency and high speed.

If you want to check your closest tower, use Opensignal on your phone and it pings the tower you are connected to. I believe the same tower provides connection to your mobile internet routers/devices.

Fiber is king but it seems it’ll never reach complete overhaul in Kuwait since majority of users I’d argue use mobile internet (whether on their phone or through a router). I’ve been hearing about fiber being laid out since 2013 and it has yet to reach even Kuwait City(!!). at least according to what local ISPs posted on their website for fiber availability.

And places like Salwa, Mishref and Rumaithiya who got fiber 1st in 2010/11 are stuck with a max 20Mbps line because they got Siemens boxes which do not support anything more. The rest of the country (where that is) has Huawei boxes that support higher speeds. Even Internet is a Mish mash and a mess like everything else. You pick from what you have where you are.

Can anyone help me out ??

I live in Salmiya block 10 and have zain bolt 818 and viva bolt too … trust me speeds sucks specially in the evening time .. don’t even hit 5-10 Mbps .. I don’t game .. but even streaming 2k is difficult.. Ooredoo no need to ask it’s the worst in my place .. all they have to say is i hey bad speeds cos I live on 9th floor ..: so it’s always to stay in flats which has less than 6 floors in their opinion … which sounds funny but may be true … so now I have a question… if I switch to 5g from zain or viva can I see better speeds ??? I mean if I just upgrade the plan with a 5 g router or It’s just a waste of money ??? Ur opinion does matter ..thanks

It’s a Zain issue bro, not yours I am living in Salmiya Block 12 on the Ground Floor and I also face the same kind of speed issues.

These are their ways to put the blame on you.

I live in Salmiya Block 12 and for the last 1 month, Zain 5G speed is maximum below 1Mbps yes 1Mbps.

I called many times customer service and the only thing they will tell you that Sir, there is an issue we will get back to you but no one ever will get back to you neither the issue will get resolved. Not only that their customer support behaves very badly they do not want even to listen to you.

I would say I am experiencing the worst 5G speed and worst customer service support.

It takes like a few minutes to open Google, even so, forgot about the streaming or downloading.

I want to know how I can reach their management? Or how can I cancel the contract? I signed the 2-year contract with them and I want to cancel because their service is very bad would they will still ask for the cancelation fee?

I will suggest anyone who wants to go for Zain 5G think twice.

Please advise what can I do? Thanks

I am sure there is cancelation fee .. all providers charge for early termination of the contract ….STC speeds sucks in salmiya block 10 .. can’t help it.. I have the 4g bolt routers .. wanted to switch to 5 g but not sure it’s gonna help me … So just waiting.. I am also clueless …have no idea how people are getting over 500MBPS speeds..

If you ever decidef or 5G and living salmiya never go for Zain their 5G service is trash and support is worst.

Brother it’s same with STC and oreedoo … They are worst too.. now even stc s website they have put that above 6 th floor and in basement internet will be weeker.. so guess just have to live with these trashy speeds forever

Hey.. any improvement on the speeds yet ? Zain is not even sure if they can provide better speeds in block 10 and higher floors.. I live in 9th floor.. I am planning to get 5g zain or ooredoo .. or Stc depend on the speed.. just let me know if u have any improvements

Hello guys,
I live in salmiya block 12 and I have been contemplating on which service to choose. I doubt that zain will work as good as people might suggest in salmiya. STC is outta question. The only option left for me to go for is ooreddoo. Recently they came up with a new offer of 500GB for 10KD (5G) but I think one would need a router since all of us are gonna use it. I have no information regarding the router and what will be better for us?
Any suggestions and advices will be appreciated fellas.
