I hit my unlimited download limit again

Back in October I posted about hitting my Red Bull Mobile internet unlimited limit for the first time. Unlimited limit sounds contradictory but somehow an unlimited internet plan is limited.

I’ve been using Red Bull Mobile for my 5G internet connection at home since they first launched. It’s a great deal, KD63 for 6 months unlimited internet so KD10.5 a month. Back in October my internet stopped working and turned out it was because for the first time I hit the limit of the unlimited plan by consuming 3TB of bandwidth. Thats when I discovered that RBM has a 3TB limit on their unlimited plan. Once you hit the limit the only option is to refill it by paying 5KD for just 50GB. 5KD for 500GB I can understand but for just 50? Wasn’t gonna happen.

As you know I built a new PC this month and so had to download Windows, apps, and games on it. I hit my 3TB limit again with 10 days to go in my month. Last time the only option I had was to get a post paid line from Zain for 500GB at 8KD a month and then cancel it before the month was completed. This time I decided to do the same thing except I’m not canceling it.

Yesterday I went and signed up for a post paid unlimited internet plan for KD16 a month (with no contract, cancel at any time). Zain’s unlimited plan is limited to 10TB a month which is a lot more reasonable than Red Bull’s 3TB. I don’t really download a lot of things, most of my bandwidth is used streaming 4K on my Apple TV, but the thought of having to worry about hitting my limit every month with Red Bull was stress I didn’t need in my life.

The weird thing is I couldn’t transfer my Red Bull Mobile number to Zain. I have a premium RBM number since I picked it out myself and Zain don’t allow the transfer of RBM numbers to Zain because RBM is Zain but not really. The only option they gave me was to transfer my number from Red Bull to a competitor like Ooredoo or STC, and then transfer it back to Zain. I wasn’t gonna do that so now I need to keep my RBM number alive every month. 🤦🏼‍♂️

I’ve hit the limit twice so far which isn’t a big deal except for the fact once you hit the limit you’re screwed with no way of getting internet back unless you pay 5KD for 50GB.

50GB isn’t going to last a day so you don’t have any other option except for signing up for a new plan with someone else.

Haven’t even crossed 1 TB ever! I think the maximum I’ve used is around 700MB when I wasn’t working (currently not working as well) and I browsing, using YouTube, downloading music and streaming Netflix/ Amazon!

usually the unlimited plans have a fair usage where its like for example 3TB at full speed and then after that at a slower speed so it’s still technically unlimited. RBM don’t have that, so there is a limit to their unlimited plan.

Wouldnt that fall under false advertisment? or were you told from the get go that there is a “fair usage” limit when you first got the subscription?

Not accusing them of anything but just curious.

unlimited*

*until someone finds out it’s not

I wouldn’t even be mad if they clearly specified a limit of 3 or 10TB. This could improve competition and we could have other players in the market offer better deals like 12TB, 15TB etc, but we know it’s all an oligopoly so that’s not going to happen.

I wouldn’t even be mad if they had the option to add another 1TB for 10KD when I hit the limit. It’s the fact that once I run out of bandwidth I have to go through the hassle of getting a temporary new internet connection that I have an issue with.

True, there are many ways they could fix it. They don’t care about the 10TB data cap hitters that probably make up less than 0.1% of their entire customer base.
Zain, if you’re reading this, introduce an “Unlimited Ultra Max” plan that’s truly unlimited for double the price, and throw in an RGB 5G modem, thank me later.

get a load balancer and another subscription from another ISP, you get the peak performance from either at all times and more bandwidth

Unlimited Internet is subject to FUP, which is a widely known fact. A 3TB plan is quite generous for 10KD a month. Theoretically, they don’t disconnect the service; they only lower the speed, so it’s essentially unlimited. I believe Zain offers a higher unlimited capacity, like 10TB per month. In France, my unlimited Orange 5G plan on my cell is 55GB!

yup except in this case once you hit the limit you don’t have internet at all not even at a slow speed. And you also can’t pay to reset it or add another 500GB for example. The only option is adding 50GB of bandwidth at a time at a cost of KD5.

This is clearly false advertising and should be reported to authorities. RedBull is just branding, its still zain as the provider.

Id encourage you to file a complain against the provider, it can be done in sahel app.

well fair usage policy applies everywhere, I don’t have an issue with that, my issue which I’ve already told them about before is that 50GB at 5KD isn’t reasonable.
