Class of Chairs 2013

Last night was the launch of the Class of Chairs exhibition at the Contemporary Art Platform. The idea behind Class of Chairs is pretty simple and fun. The space at CAP was set up like a classroom with each chair in the class representing a certain stereotypical character you had back in school like the nerd, the tall guy, the pervert, the hairy guy etc..

The event itself was pretty fun last night since it was a social gathering and everyone knew everybody else. If you’re interested to check it out, Class of Chairs will be exhibiting until tomorrow (Friday). For more information on the event click [Here]

Graffiti Supplies at “Not Just a Pop-up”

If you’re looking for graffiti supplies I found some for sale last night at the “Not Just a Pop-up” event that was held at Dar Al-Funoon (behind Casper & Gambini in Kuwait City). The event was supposed to be just one night but they’ve extended it for two more hours tonight, 8PM to 10PM. They had Montana spray cans, a collection of caps as well as Krink markers and some stencil books. So if you want any tonight is the last night to pass by.

Event: Class of Chairs 2013

Date: Wednesday 24th to Friday 26th July 2013
Time: 9:30PM to 11:30PM
Location: Contemporary Art Platform

Update: Here is some more info from their Facebook page

The Class of Chairs is a satirical commentary on the stereotypical characters found within school life. The school culture in Kuwait is relatable to Hollywood’s pop-cultural representation of the high school hierarchy and social groups found in playgrounds and classrooms.

The collection of chairs is a literal adaptation of the different student typecasts found in international and public schools in Kuwait. Each chair represents an individual high school persona, where the character’s attributes are translated in the design aspect of its material and functional use.

The template of each chair was based on the classical 1950’s European school chair in which different manufacturing processes were used to materialistically translate the different student characteristics. The Class of Chairs attempts to evoke nostalgic scenes of past high school memories to create a relatable experience for the viewer.

Pop Up Graffiti Picnic

My friends at Monstariam are organizing a super cool event, a “Pop Up Graffiti Picnic”. They’re going to provide you with walls to graffiti (legally) and you just need to come down with your own spray cans and food and just spend the afternoon tagging the walls while eating and socializing.

The event is on May 10th in the park outside Discovery Mall in Kuwait City. I’m going to be there for sure.

The weather is still good right now catch a rooftop movie while you still can. Volver and The Life Aquatic are two movies I would want to see and maybe for nostalgia purposes I’d watch Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal again. Check out the full list of movies for Maybe below:

CHUNGKING EXPRESS
From the critically acclaimed director of In the Mood for Love, Wong Kar Wai’s Chungking Express holds a 96% rating on rottentomatoes.com, and winner of 15 international awards. Two stories, two lovelorn cops, two objects of desire: one a big-time heroin dealer in deep trouble with her boss after the cargo disappears, the other a seriously flaky take-out waitress who inadvertently gets hold of the keys to her admirer’s apartment, all shot in a breathless kaleidoscope of color and hand-held camera work to create a mesmerizing portrait of Hong Kong in the 1990s.

Cinemagic Kuwait, is organizing these events as part of its efforts to contribute to the development of an internationally competitive Kuwaiti audio-visual production industry, partly by bringing the filmmakers and audiences together and by Increasing the public’s interest in – and appreciation for – the art of film-making. Event: Ecru – When Life Gives You Lemons

Ecru is a local Kuwaiti homeware brand (yay! not cupcakes) that will be launching this week with a pop-up shop at Dar Al-Funoon. What I found interesting about them is that their prints are created manually. Basically the way their prints are created is an old fashioned technique where blocks are carved with the pattern and then the pattern is manually stamped onto the fabric. I did a bit of that as part of an art class back in university and I loved the technique because every time you stamped a pattern it was slightly different from the other.

Date: April 24th to April 30th 2013
Time: 10AM to 8PM
Location: Dar Al-Funoon

For more information you can visit the Ecru website [Here]
