Al Nata Now on Talabat

My good friends at Al Nata have started selling their baked goods on Talabat. They’re the guys behind the addictive Portuguese tart pastries (pictured above) which I posted about on the blog. Previously you could only catch them at various food markets on weekends with also a limited product placement at Sultan Center. But now their full product line is available on Talabat and that includes the Al Nata tart pastries, the Claudinos and their fluffy croissants. Check them out [Here]

Modern Architecture Kuwait 1949-1989

modernarch1

Yesterday evening I was invited to the launch of the book “Modern Architecture Kuwait 1949-1989” that was held at Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah in Yarmouk. I really didn’t ask any questions about the event before I went since I’ve been wanting to get my hands on the book ever since I found out about it last year. So when one of the book authors invited me to the launch, I just went no questions asked. What I didn’t know was that there was going to be a presentation by Mr. Khalid al-Essa, the former Minister of Public Works and Dr. Ibrahim al-Shaheen, the former General Director of Public Authority of Housing and former Minister of Municipal Affairs. Both those presenters were around and involved during Kuwait’s architectural rise and once their presentation was over they took part in a panel discussion.

modernarch0

For those of you that have following the blog for awhile now you already know my obsession with Kuwait’s past and so I felt extremely lucky to be in attendance last night listening to the stories of how Kuwait went from mud buildings to having world renowned architects like Kenzo Tange, Jørn Utzon and I. M. Pei involved in local projects. Listening to the two of them talk last night reminded me again how truly young Kuwait is.

modernarch2

The book “Modern Architecture Kuwait 1949-1989” is a combined effort by Roberto Fabbri, Sara Saragoça Soares and Ricardo Camacho. It involves over two years of investigative research as well as gorgeous photography taken by the gifted architectural photographer Nelson Garrido who travelled across Kuwait to document over 150 buildings that are featured in the book. The buildings are divided into four categories:

Specimens I – building as infrastructure: 1949-1960
Specimens II – building as national identity: 1961-1979
Specimens III – building as cityscape: 1971-1979
Specimens IV – building as programme: 1980-1989

As you can imagine, the book if fairly thick but with the amount of constant demolishing of old buildings taking place in Kuwait, its important to document as many buildings as possible before it’s too late.

modernarch3

The book costs KD22 and is available on Amazon [Link] and also at the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah bookshop in Yarmouk [Map]. If you have the slightest interest in architecture, design or Kuwait’s past then you should definitely get one.

This morning the architectural and design magazine Dezeen ran a piece on the book along with around 20 photos. Check it out, their article has a lot more details and the photos will give you a general idea of what to expect inside the book. Here is the [Link]

Richard’s Coffee, A Pop-up Cafe

richardscoffee1

Coffee places are becoming the new thing in Kuwait which I don’t mind since we really need to move on from our burger joints craze. As I’ve mentioned before on the blog, I’m not a coffee drinker but, I do like coffee shops and what I found interesting about Richard’s Coffee is that it’s a pop-up.

richardscoffee2

Starting from tomorrow (Thursday, March 17th), Richard’s Coffee will be located at Bao Cafe for 90 days only. After 90 days? They’ll shutdown and move on to a new location. Bao Cafe is what they’re calling the space next door to Bao the Restaurant, it’s a small empty spot that in 90 days time will be occupied by a new Indian restaurant. But until those 90 days are up, they’ve given the spot to Jarrah, the guy behind the concept Richard’s Coffee. Jarrah is an avid coffee nut who roasts his beans the old fashioned way and is really passionate about his brand. So if you’re a coffee person then you might want to pass by and check his coffees out.

Starting tomorrow and for the next 90 days they’ll be open from 7AM till 10PM except on Fridays when they open from 4PM to 10PM. They’re located right next door to Bao in Sharq, if you don’t know where that is, here is the link on [Google Maps]. They’re also located on instagram @richardscoffeebar.

Herafy Store: Clays & Crafts

herafy1

I found out about Herafy through Tamara’s Teaspoons instragram account. If you don’t already know about Tamara, she’s a super talented artist who creates handmade polymer clay and resin charms that are mostly food related. You can check out her instagram account [Here] to see what I’m talking about or check out the photo below.

tamarasteaspoons

Anyway so Herafy is a small store in Al Rai that has everything you need to get into this hobby and what caught my interest is not only do they supply all the items, but they also hold clay classes in the store as well. It’s such a random hobby which is why I thought I thought it would be interesting to share on the blog. So if you’re looking for a new hobby, check out the Herafy instagram account @7erafy or visit their website where they have an online store selling all their products [Here]

The Most Powerful Women in Kuwait- 2016

Once a year Arabian Business releases a list of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Arab Women” and every year I go through the list and find all the Kuwait based women and list them on the blog. Last year the list was the smallest since I started keeping track of it with only 5 women making the list and 2013 had the highest number with 11 women making the list. This year things have improved slightly with 7 women making the list including a few new comers like Noor Al Qatami, the owner of SaveCo. Shaikha Al Bahar is also back on top as the most powerful Kuwaiti woman after losing that spot last year to Maali Alasousi, who went from 25th most powerful Arabi women to no longer being on the list. Here are the most powerful women in Kuwait for 2016:

48- Shaikha Al Bahar (-27)
56- Maha Al Ghunaim (-5)
74- Sara Akbar (+20)
76- Eaman Al Roudhan (New)
83- Elham Yousry Mahfouz (New)
89- Noor Al Qatami (New)
94- Rasha Al Roumi (-48)

Note: The (-) is how many spots they dropped from the previous year, (+) is how many spots they’ve moved up and (New) means they weren’t on the list last year.

Update: Changed the post title to reflect the fact not all the powerful women in Kuwait are Kuwaiti.

Vapes and E-Juices Now Legal to Import into Kuwait

vape

Vapers can rejoice, according to the official customs instagram account, it is now legal to import vapes and their juices into Kuwait. Not sure if this means vape bars will start popping up all around Kuwait but at least current prices of vapes and juices should drop since it’s a lot easier now to bring the stuff into Kuwait.

Also who knew customs had an instagram account? And I love how they posted a picture of a shipment of vapes and juices they had confiscated and then a few hours later post that its now legal. Check out their instagram account [Here]

Two Anniversaries, One Month

So this past Friday (February 19th) was my blogs 11 year anniversary. I published my first post here back in February 19th 2005, a really odd post which I find hilarious now since my blog has become what it is today. If I had known my blog would end up here I would have probably posted something a bit less… crude.

But, what I just realized a few moments ago is that this February also marks the 13th anniversary of my first post on my first blog ever. Back in 2003 me and a few friends launch a blog called Qhate and my first post there was published on February 6th, 2003. At that time we were the first blog based in Kuwait and unlike my early posts on 248AM, I actually enjoy reading my old stuff on Qhate. For those of you who don’t know, Qhate started off as a war blog in which we were posting about life in Kuwait during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. So reading through my old posts there just takes me back in time during the volatile period. If you’ve never gone through some of the posts there you should, it’s like an untouched time capsule. Tumi Love

tumi

I’ve had my Tumi suitcase for 6 or more years now and it just won’t die. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Tumi but I’ve also had my eye on an aluminium Rimowa for sometime now. I saw a badly beat up and dented one at an airport a few years ago and even though the suitcase wasn’t in its best shape of its life, it had a lot of character and I fell in love with it right away. I decided I would get one as soon as my Tumi fell apart but that day doesn’t seem like it will be coming anytime soon.

I travel a lot and my Tumi bag (pictured above) is my favorite and primary suitcase which I take with me wherever I go. I’m not very gentle with it, I’m abusive and I really throw it about and expect it to take my shit with no questions asked. The wheels have probably taken the most amount of abuse from me and yet they’re still in perfect condition. The suitcase is bullet proof (probably literally).

After all these years of my Tumi putting up with me, I figured it was time I’d be nice to it and show my appreciation with a post on the blog. So if you’re looking for a durable travel suitcase I can’t recommend Tumi enough.
