Since I arrived to Cairo on the weekend I hadn’t really experience Cairo traffic until today. It took us around an hour and a half to get to Lucille’s a burger place that was highly recommended by a few readers on the blog while it took only 20 minutes on the way back. If that wasn’t bad enough there was a football match tonight in which the Egyptian team Ahli won and I ended up getting stuck in one crazy traffic jam celebration on my way to the production house.
Anyway finding Lucille’s wasn’t very easy and when I did the place didn’t look impressive. I decided to ignore the location and look of the place and go in and order a cheese burger. I had read a lot of positive stuff about this burger so I was really expecting it to be great, it wasn’t!
For everyone who rated this burger highly you must have had a different burger than the one I had because mine was pretty ordinary. Presentation wasn’t appetizing at all and although the bun was soft and the meat tender the burger overall was just fair. If it was in Kuwait I would have rated it a 3 or 3.5 out of 5 not more so I don’t understand how this could be the best burger in Cairo. The one I had at Four Seasons last night was a better burger than this.
No more burgers for me on this trip, I need to start having more local dishes.

Back in 2006 I posted about how I was able to get a hold of three original Apple Think Different banners from the local Apple dealer (Digits) and today I finally put them up.
For those of you who don’t know, the slogan “Think Different” was created for Apple back in 1997 (yes they were around before the iPod). The slogan was used in various commercials and print adverts but the most famous ones were the creative innovators tribute ads. I was able to get a hold of 3 banners, a Pablo Piccaso, Martha Graham and the rare Buzz Aldrin one.
Since I just finished redecorating (I now officially live inside my blog), I managed to find space to put up the banners and they look great. It took me two years but they’re finally up. The picture above is of the Buzz Aldrin banner, its 70cm wide and 160cm in height.

A blog reader that goes by the nickname Komsomol posted the following observation in the forum:
I find it hilarious that there is catch phrase words used by Kuwait newspapers and journalists. The result is usually hilarious hyperbolic headlines.
Any criticism for example is always “slammed”:
MP slams government
Kuwait slams Israel’s inhuman practices
MP Dr Ali Al-Hajri slammed the government’s silence towards the statements made by the Minister of Commerce and Industry Ahmed Baqer
Al-Harbi slams commerce minister
Iranian paper slams MoI’s Farsi language channel plan
Clerics slam German magazine
MP slams govt’s incapability
Officials slammed for frequently traveling on ministry’s expense
MP slams govt over disorganized food distribution for Kuwaitis
MP slams education minister
MP Al-Mulaifi slams premier
MP slams Al-SabeehAnything great is always either “hailed”, “praised” or deemed a ‘success’:
Al-Sabeeh meeting hailed
Kuwait reform process hailed
Eight-digit phone system ‘success‘
WHO praises Kuwait for its efforts to combat smoking
Kuwait praises women’s roleIn the cabinet and parliament they only ‘grill’:
Al-Sabeeh may resign if grilled in parliament
Al-Sabeeh grilling proposal
Move to grill premier
Call for grilling
Al-Hajji among ministers expected to be grilledAny Country ties are always “deep tied” or “deeply rooted”:
Kuwait-Yemen ties ‘deeply rooted,’ says ambassador
Kuwait, Turkey affirm deep ties
Kuwait, Bahrain affirm deep-rooted relations
I think the grilling ones sound hilarious! [Link]
Reporters without Borders just released the 2008 Worldwide Press Freedom Index and Kuwait came first among Arab countries ahead of both Lebanon and UAE. It isn’t really a surprise since the top spot is usually always a fight between Kuwait and Lebanon but when Kuwait wins it always feels more impressive. [Link]
There was a demonstration taking place on my way to work today this morning in front of the house of parliament. At first I assumed it had something to do with the current financial instability but looking at the banners now I think the demonstration was related to the naturalization of the Bedouins Bedoun’s. Here is the larger size of the picture above. [Picture]

Back when I was taking pictures for my Miskan project I passed by the Kuwait Stock Exchange and ended up taking some cool pictures. Since the stock market is a popular topic at the moment I figured I would upload all the pictures I had taken that day so people can download them and use them. I’ve gotten a lot of emails from magazines and newspapers asking for the hi-res pictures so here they are all compressed into one zip file.
Download stock market pictures (4.8MB)
In return, please credit the blog if you end up using any of the photos.
The Kuwait Stock Exchange, the second largest in the Arab world tumbled at opening today. I don’t know what that will mean for us regular folks (more price increases at McDonalds?) but there are currently investors outside the stock exchange demonstrating. The 4th Ring Road blog are dramatically calling this the “KSE Bloodbath” and are currently tracking things and posting pictures of the demonstration, here is their [Link]
Arab Times printed an article in today’s paper on Latina Mina’s drunk deejaying the other night and the whole article was just all quotes from the post on my blog and all its commentators. Its cool that blogs are actually being taken seriously but they should have actually mentioned 2:48AM instead of calling it just “a blog”. I guess they should have also written an article instead of just taking quotes from everyone and sticking them together. Here is the link to the article on Arab Times and if it doesn’t open up for some reason I’ve saved a pdf version which you can download below. Maybe I should just call them “a newspaper” from now on.
Update: Latina Mina has fled the country. Here is the latest article on this from “a newspaper”. [PDF version]
Update2: According to someone working at 99.7, any employee at the station who asks for a recording of the session will get fired on the spot. The ministry really does not want the recording to make its way online.

According to the blog Kuwait Black Market, Slider Station will be opening up at the Avenues. Their new location will be much bigger than the current one and which is pretty tiny. No mention of a launch date though. [Link]
Update: Ok I spoke to the owner and this is not true. Slider Station is not opening at the Avenues only 360 Mall. But, it seems they are planning something for the Avenues, my guess is a new project which is good news for us.

Miss Ghesquiere sent me a link to this video 5 days ago of a teacher in one of the local schools singing the Bird song but I didn’t find it funny until I watched the latest Family Guy episode below. Pretty cool teacher.
