Sheraton Kuwait – 1965

Sheraton looks pretty good in 1965. Supposedly it was the first Sheraton to open outside of North America. I say supposedly because I also read Sheraton Tel Aviv was first. Check out the much larger shot [Here]

Back in 2008 Kuwait announced they were going to build a nuclear power plant to satisfy our electricity consumption. Two years later they announced they were actually building not one but four nuclear plants and they would be up and running by 2022. Well, it seems the plans to go nuclear have now been scrapped because of the Fukushima disaster [Link]

The Meteorological Department is holding a photography contest. If you want to participate you need to submit a photograph you’ve taken related to a meteorological phenomenon in Kuwait. First place prize is KD100, second is KD75 and third place is KD50. Fourth to tenth place will also receive KD30 each. Not very large amounts of money but it’s very easy to take part in and there are going to be 10 winners in total. Closing date for the competition is March 13th. Kuwait is doing fairly well
According to the latest Legatum Prosperity Index, Kuwait ranked 35th in the world. We came second only behind UAE in the MENA region although the list missed some important countries like Bahrain, Qatar and Oman due to lack of data. Lebanon ranked pretty low but what’s most surprising is Kuwait ranked better than Lebanon when it came to personal freedom.
You can check out the full list along with more details on the Legatum Index website [Here]
This is a video of all the bikes heading towards the Concours event on Friday for the bike show. It was a never ending line of bikes after bikes. [YouTube]
Thanks Ramez

The entire project consists of 69 stations (16 per cent underground) with total length of 160 km. PTB is currently focusing on delivering phase 1 of the project which will include the construction network of roughly 50 km, with 28 new stations, 30 per cent of which will be underground.
The article doesn’t mention a start or end date but I guess it’s the thought that counts. [Link]
Update: Work on the Doha Metro starts in 2013 [Link]
Run Kuwait is a 240KM run from the very north of Kuwait to the very south. It’s taking place on the 25th of this month and is estimated to take 50 hours. Six runners are taking part an effort to promote the Aymstrong message of empowerment by creating a sense of determination, and unity within local society and amongst Kuwait’s youth. One of my goals in life is to one day end up in WIRED Magazine so I’m kinda jealous these guys got in before me. I guess my flavored banak idea isn’t WIRED worthy. Anyway back to the subject. WIRED has a feature in their latest print and online issue on the new Stars of Science Arab reality show. I haven’t watched the show but the article features the final 5 and includes local inventor Mohammed Al-Rifai who created a steam iron robot. You can read the article online on WIRED’s website [Here]

Kuwaiti is aiming to double its tourist arrivals to one million by 2015 as it seeks to boost its tourism infrastructure to attract more leisure travelers, said the organisers of an upcoming travel expo in Dubai. [Source]
Ummm what tourists??

Just read on Gulf News that “Kuwait has banned smoking and shisha in all public places, including airports, cafes, restaurants, shopping centres and recreational areas.” I thought at first the law was against shisha only but it seems it’s against both smoking and shisha.
Now what’s confusing me is that in the same article it states that “Under the ban, cafes, restaurants and hotels have to allocate a secluded area for smokers.” Isn’t that basically how things are right now? [Source]
