ubon : noodles rice curries

There’s a new local creation called ubon opening up soon in my office building. I checked out their website and this is the description:

Ubon, a contemporary Thai restaurant specializes in curries, rice & noodles. Located in the heart of Kuwait city, Ubon is perfect for a quick lunch break or for a relaxing night out dinner. Ubon serves flavorful Thai food in a hip, modern and welcoming atmosphere.

Seems like its going to be cool. [Link]

Off with your head!

If for some reason I accidentally hit that bus from the rear I could easily imagine getting decapitated. Why are buses allowed to have their rear engine cover open like that? It’s not the first time I’ve seen that and I’m guessing they do it to keep their engine cool but that’s no excuse.

Chihuly sculpture not badly damaged

When I first heard that the orange Chihuly sculpture at 360 Mall got damaged I got really upset since I imagined a large chunk of it had fallen to the ground. Luckily my imagination had run wild and the damage turned out to be barely visible. I passed by 360 Mall earlier tonight and actually had a hard time spotting the damage which is great.

If you’re curious to know how both the Chihuly sculptures were built check out these pictures that were taken during the installation. [Link]

Beirut & Burgers

A few burger places have recently popped up in Lebanon and I decided I would try a new place every day on this trip. So far I’ve tried two places and have ended up with mixed results which you could read about on my Lebanese blog [Here]. Best part is, since I’m on vacation everyday is a cheat day!

GulfRun 26 Hour Karting

Our friends over at GulfRun are setting up a 26 hour endurance karting race. The race is going to be held on the 25th of November but registration has started already. Since it’s a 26 hour race each team is required to have at least 4 drivers or a maximum of 12. They’ll be building their own track in Kuwait City for this race which will be regulated by UK marshalls according to FIA regulations.

If you’re interested here is the link with more information [Here]

Burgers don’t make you fat

As I’ve posted before I am now riding to and from my gym on my bicycle. The combined distance is around 16.5KM, it takes around 30 minutes each way and I end up burning around 600-700 calories in the process. Since I go to Core three times a week that means I’m basically burning around 2000 calories a week just by riding my bike to the gym.

The way I look at it is every time I ride to the gym that’s an extra 700 calories I’m burning which means I can have a burger that’s also around 700 calories and I would even out.

What this means is I now ride to eat. If anyone is looking for a way to burn calories I highly recommend riding. Even with this hot weather it’s not bad at all, it’s actually not that hot at night. Just park your car near Corniche Club on the Gulf Road and then ride to the Kuwait Towers and back. Easy as that.

SNOG – Pure Frozen Yogurt

Yes another frozen yogurt place is opening up. I spotted the above hoarding in Phase II of Avenues. It’s a good location since other than two Pinkberry’s, Napket and IKEA they really don’t have much competition there.

MP BuRamiah warns Communication Minister on internet prices

Someone get me some popcorn:

Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Daifallah BuRamiah expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the Ministry of Communication, adding that giving the internet companies the chance to manipulate prices is unaffordable. BuRamiah said, “The ministry has become a playground for some influential traders and those who rob public funds.” He added claiming that the ministry turned a blind eye to the improper practices of some companies in order to gain political loyalty at the expense of public funds.

MP BuRamiah said that the ministry’s insistence on keeping internet services monopolized by a small number of companies indicates that the ministry is supporting some companies against the subscribers in order to satisfy some greedy traders and influential people. BuRamiah noted that he would direct parliamentary questions to the Minister of Communication to inquire about the number of internet companies, their owners, the fees, and also about the reasons behind not allowing foreign companies to enter the local market. He also warned the minister of neglecting his questions, which will in turn reveal the facts about those who rob public funds.

Know your thob female edition

Last month I posted the male edition of Know your thob and this month Brownbook released the female edition. Sadly this edition isn’t as interesting since it groups up the whole Gulf under one thob and it also leaves out the popular coneheads look. You can see the full version [Here]

Kuwaiti Entrepreneurs

Kuwaitism (yes he’s back) posted a BBC report he found on Kuwaiti entrepreneurs. It’s a very short piece which is disappointing since it’s a very interesting topic. I really couldn’t figure out what BBC was trying to say with this piece, all I understood was that the Kuwaiti government helps Kuwaitis set up their businesses, so why aren’t there more entrepreneurs? That’s fine as an intro but they spoke to just 2 entrepreneurs and one government official and we’re really left with no investigation or conclusion. For example I’m sure laziness isn’t the only reason for lack of entrepreneurship, what about the fact that the market is flooded with international chains? Maybe rents are too high as well? I’m not sure since I am just guessing here which is why I would have liked BBC to really dig into this subject. If you can’t see the video above for some reason here is the [Link]

Horrifying Kuwaiti mythical creatures

I am not a huge fan of art unless it’s something really strange or different and I think this painting fits into that category easily. Kuwaiti artisit Nawaf Al-Hmeli has two oil paintings based on two Kuwaiti horrifying mythical creatures the Tantal and Hemarat Algayla. I honestly had never heard of these two creatures but this is what the artist says about them:

Hemarat Algayla (painting pictured above)
Half Woman/Half Donkey creature which hunts children and feeds on them “ONLY” at noon when the sun is blazing hot. It used to be the elders way of preventing children from wandering about at noon and keeping them safe so they’re not subject to neither heat strokes nor kidnapping.

Tantal
Tantal is a myth created by the elders in order to keep children from going out at night and ensuring their well-being. More like the Kuwaiti version of the Boogeyman if you like. The stories coincided with the disappearance of a young boy at that time who went out to sea at night and never came back. People immediately blamed it on Mr. Tantal here and the myth grew. 20 years later, this man comes along looking for his family and told everyone his story of how he was kidnapped and sold to a Persian man as a slave when he was a kid.

I really love the artist for bringing these two mythical creatures into focus since it allows me to share it with everyone. I’m not sure if there are any more myths but if there are would love to hear about them as well. I don’t have any information on the size of the paintings or if they are for sale but you can check out the artists deviantART page [Here], the Hmarat Algayla painting by clicking [Here] and Tantal by clicking [Here]

Thanks Safaa
