(un)Official Hash Bar – Kuwait

Ummm is there a Hash Bar in Kuwait that I don’t know about? BusyNow was researching for his upcoming trip when he discovered this under a review of accommodations in Kuwait:

SAS Radisson, Salwa, Tel. 575 6000, Fax 575 0155, E-mail: Again we have some good eating, a reasonable gym, and hosts of many Quiz Nights. Chalets are available for long term guests and this is the nearest hotel to the (un)official Hash Bar.

WHAT HASH BAR?? Can someone post a map or something??

Here is the link to the page he found it at, do a search for the word “hash” and you will find it. [Link]

Hostage

hostage

Yesterday I watched Hostage starring Bruce Willis. I hadn’t heard allot of decent reviews on it so I didn’t have my hopes up. In the movie, Bruce Willis is a failed police negotiator turned small town cop. A hostage situation takes place in his town and he is forced back as a negotiator to save the lives of the family taken hostage. Things turn out to be allot more complicated and he gets drawn into a much more dangerous situation.

The intro credits to the movie were really cool. It looked like something out of a Frank Miller comic and the style didn’t match the movie at all. The intro credits were basically too funky and stylish for the actual movie.

The movie itself was good though, it never got boring and something was always happening. Some reviews said that they were tired of Bruce Willis playing a cop and the movie reminded them too much of the Die Hard trilogy, I personally would rather see Bruce Willis play a cop then anything else. If you’ve watched Hudson Hawk or the disastrous The Whole Ten Yards you would know what I am talking about.

Ultimately, if you are looking for a fun movie to watch that doesn’t require you to think, this is the movie to watch.

Kuwait Cinema

I can’t find it now but I remember reading in a local blog a complaint about Kuwait Cinema closing for Ramadan. Well I think I now know why, it seems they are rebranding. KNCC will become the mother company while CinemaScape (if i remember correctly) will be the new name. You might have noticed the outdoor ads recently (the do not cross yellow police line), I think they will launch the new brand once they open up the cinemas again during eid.

update: seems KNCC closed today till eid and has been open throughout ramadan.

Thirtieth Anniversary Macintosh

tam

Apple turns 30 on April 1st. When Apple turned 20 they released the Twentieth Anniversary Mac. It cost $10,000 and was delivered to your home in a limo. The system looked like nothing else at that time. It had a very small foot print kinda like the current iMacs and the sound system was designed by Bose. The Mac came with a remote control so you could turn it on and off plus control the volume. You could even watch TV on the Mac and change channels using the remote. Due to the price though they only sold 12,000 world wide. I was able to purchase a brand new TAM three years ago from a local dealer for KD150. I gave it as a gift to my parents who proudly display it and use it today. Even though the TAM was released in 1997, it still grabs the attention and curiosity of visiting guests.

If Apple would release a Thirtieth Anniversary Macintosh this time around, it has to follow the footsteps of the previous one. It has to look like nothing else available which shouldn’t be too hard for Apple to accomplish. It should cost $10,000 and this time they probably would team up with Bang & Olufsen. Finally every hardcore Mac user would want one but none of us would be able to afford it. [Link]

Movies I need to Watch

DA (1988)
A New York playwright is summoned to Ireland to bury his father (his “Da”). While at his boyhood home, he encounters his father’s spirit and relives memories both pleasant and not.

I Am Dina (2002)
In Northern Norway during the 1860s, a little girl named Dina accidentally causes her mother’s death. Overcome with grief, her father refuses to raise her, leaving her in the care of the household servants. Dina grows up wild and unmanageable, with her only friend being the stable boy, Tomas. She summons her mother’s ghost and develops a strange fascination with death as well as a passion for living. Family friend Jacob encourages Dina’s father to hire Lorch, a tutor who introduces her to the cello. When Dina is old enough, she marries Jacob and moves to Reinsnes, a port he runs with his mother, Karen, and his stepsons Niels and Anders . Niels doesn’t like Dina’s wild ways, or the fact that she has taken over accounting duties at Reinsnes. Dina’s eccentric tendencies become even stronger, eventually leading Jacob into an accident of his own and bringing Tomas back into her life.

Dogville (2003)
Set in an American Town in the Rocky Mountains in the 1930s. Lars von Trier re-explores the concept of goodness, but this in an idiom very different from that of his Gold Heart Trilogy (Breaking the Waves, The idiots and Dancer in the Dark). DOGVILLE is shot exclusively in studio with a minimum of props once again allowing the actors’ maximum freedom and full exposure inspired by televised theatre of the 70s. In DOGVILLE Trier works extensively with light, sound, score and music to obtain and heighten dramatic atmosphere.

Angel Heart (1987)
Harry Angel has a new case, to find a man called Johnny Favourite. Except things aren’t quite that simple, and Johnny doesn’t want to be found. Let’s just say that, amongst the period detail and beautiful scenery, it all gets really, really nasty.

Found this link on Will’s Weblog and decided to try it myself. As expected I turned out to be a Low-Rank Computer Geek. Hopefully Tivo-Guy will take the test. He should probably ace it. [Link]

My computer geek score is greater than 62% of all people in the world! How do you compare? Click here to find out!

Update: Tivo-Guy took the test and sadly scored only a 93. I thought for sure he would get 100. tsk tsk

Movies Movies Movies

orlando bloom

I watched three movies this weekend, here are some quick reviews.

Ocean’s Twelve
First one I watched was Ocean’s Twelve. I wasn’t expecting allot of this movie but it turned out pretty cool. I like George Clooney so thats why I probably enjoyed the movie. Catherine Zeta-Jones did a pretty good job in this movie although I really dislike her. The movie wasn’t action packed but since there were allot of characters and most of them celebrities, it was pretty entertaining to watch.

Hellboy
The second movie I watched was Hellboy. I thought this movie was pretty silly. Its watchable.. if there was nothing else on TV.

Kingdom of Heaven
Finally, the third movie I watched and the best of the bunch was Kingdom of Heaven. I was for some reason expecting it to be a romance and thats why I held back on watching it till now. Well it turned out it’s not a romance. The movie was exciting to watch but I was expecting more battle scenes. Other then the last large one you don’t see that much fighting. There was one battle I was excited to watch but they didn’t show it to us. They showed the army arriving in one scene, and then the next scene the battle is over. I thought that was pretty lame. After the couple of mediocre movies I watched recently, this movie faired better at keeping me interested.

Fact of the Day

Someone shared this with me in the morning. Did you know the nails on your fingers grow four times faster then on your toes? Also another fact I learned, international banks that are opening up in Kuwait like HSBC and CitiBank are only allowed to open only one local branch according to Kuwait law.

Nissan GT-R

nissan gt-r

Autoblog has tons of pictures of the new Nissan GT-R concept. Supposingly the production car is going to look very similar to this. So far it looks like they have retained most of the characteristics of the previous model which is a good thing. [Link]

Hacked PSP – My Experience

Yesterday I recieved my 1GB Ultra II Memorystick Duo and I quickly tried running games off it by copying their iso’s onto the Memorystick and running them using FastLoader 0.7. Majority of the games I tried didn’t work and I even had trouble unraring most of the files. So here are some tips I would like to pass on from my experience.

– Firstly, Mac users, if you want to unrar files, get UnRarX. Its a great utillity that does a much better job then Stuffit. I was getting errors using Stuffit but didn’t get any when using UnRarX.

– Secondly, there are two different types of MemoryStick Duo’s, the regular kinda and the High-speed. Whats the difference? Regular memorysticks read and write at 15MB/sec while the high=speed ones read and write at 80MB/sec. So get the High-Speed (Ultra II) ones since they cost a bit more but offer better performance.

– Thirdly, most of the games like Winning Eleven 9 and Madden 2006 wouldn’t work with the regular FastLoader. To get it working I used Devhook 0.21.

If I have any more tips I will add them to this post in the future.

You know you’re a Mac geek when…

* You have an Apple ][e in your room
* You have over 5 web browsers installed
* You use an old desktop-format Mac II/Powermac as a laptop stand
* You’ve been to 1 Infinite Loop
* You’ve used System 1 on a 128k Mac…within the past year
* Your external hard drive has Apple stickers on it
* You’ve stood in line for at least one Apple Store opening/OS release
* If you see a Mac/iPod in a movie or TV show, you know exactly what model it is, how many megahertz it has, and whether it can run OS X at a decent speed
