I just found out some disappointing news. After all these years of drinking Like Cola thinking I was supporting a local product, I just found out that Like was actually introduced by 7up. Oh well at least we still have Shani to be proud of.

Yesterday some people suggested that the reason behind KFC’s recent addition to the Fish Zinger sandwich is so that they can offer a non-chicken alternative on their menu in case of another bird flu scare. I suggested that if that was the case KFC should have advertised their Colonel Burger. Well turns out there is a story behind that burger. Tat, a reader of the blog commented with the following information:

Business predictions are that bird flu will reappear every summer. Last summer, Egypt’s KFC sales fell almost by half and the Gulf KFC’s by 20 – 25%. Therefore KFC international has come up with non-chicken products to offer alternatives.

The Colonel Burger has been around for a long time. It was a product, started many years back, by Americana locally, to beat a competitor called Jack in the Box; a burger chain concept that dared include fried chicken in their menu. Since the burger is not a KFC product its not advertised too much.

KFC in the gulf will move over to transfat free oil in a few months.

Yes I know I already posted at least two different opening dates for Carrefour before but they just kept pushing back the opening dates. Now according to a user (Rocker) in the forum the new launch date is this Tuesday.

Ever since I saw the ad for KFC’s Fish Zinger sandwich I thought to myself, why?? It didn’t make any sense, who would want to have a fish burger at KFC? Now since I needed content for my blog I figured what the heck, I would try it for lunch. Luckily for me it wasn’t that bad.

It tastes like chicken. No really it does, I think its because the spicy zinger overpowers the taste of the fish… which is a good thing because who wants to taste KFC’s version of the fish anyway. The sandwich is presented in its own customized over sized packaging which misleads you into thinking the Fish Zinger is huge, only once you open it you realize its not that big. The bun they use is pretty good (not the regular KFC bun) but its not as good as McDonalds fillet-o-fish bun which I rank as one of the prettiest looking buns ever.

The price of a Fish Zinger sandwich is KD1.000 and if you order it as a combo its KD1.500. I personally wouldn’t order it again but its really not as bad as I imagined it to be. I don’t know why they would suddenly introduce a fish burger to their menu, maybe they are thinking of launching a Kentucky Fried Fish in the future and they are just testing the waters? Whatever their reason might be I hope they stick to chicken. Final score is a 3 out of 5.

I just came back from Boubouffe which is my favorite shawerma place here in Lebanon and anywhere else in the world for that matter. With over 30 years experience, Boubouffe simply make the best chicken shawermas I have ever tasted. The price of each shawerma sandwich is KD1 which I guess would make it also one of the most expensive? Maybe, although I hear the shawermas in London aren’t cheap at all.

Today I got some brownies from Choowy Goowy to work. I had tried them before but this was the first time I got them to the office. I let everyone try a bite and everyone simply loved them. They are really good and aren’t too sweet so they don’t feel heavy. It comes with either caramel or chocolate dip but I prefer the caramel. The packaging is nice and 2 dozen brownie bites will set you back KD5.500 but keep in mind they are brownie bites meaning the pieces aren’t very big. note: I called up The Burger Hub and it seems this Monster Burger will launch on the 29th of April which is on their anniversary. The price isn’t final yet but it should cost over KD15.
