Gus Van Sant, the director behind great movies like Elephant and Good Will Hunting just released a new movie last month called Last Days. The movie is loosely based on the last days of Nirvana’s lead singer Kurt Cobain who died in 1994. Michael Pitt who plays the lead role in the movie as a musician named Blake looks like Kurt Cobain, dresses like him and dies like him at the end of the movie. You can watch the trailer on Apple’s website [here] and you can check out the official site [here]. I can’t wait to watch this movie since I love Nirvana and it was a really shock to me when Kurt Cobain died. I was in Montreal when it happened and I remember the music channel there, Much Music played Nirvana songs all day long.

Ebert’s Most Hated Movies
Via Kottke, here is a list of Roger Ebert’s most hated movies with his reasons for not liking them. [Link]
Ebert’s a nice guy, I’ve seen him a couple of times on Jay Leno and always wished I had his job of just watching movies all day long. I don’t think his taste is very cool though, I prefer Rollingstone’s movie reviews, they are a lot cooler and younger then Ebert AND they gave Dukes of Hazzard zero stars! I found that very funny.

NetLag is a beautiful shortfilm by Pleix. What appears at first as a map of the world with continents lit by electric lights becomes a series of web and video cameras from across the world set in sync with each other to mimic days, nights, and seasonal progressions. To create the movie, Netlag combined footage from over 1609 live web cameras while the music to Netlag was composed by Henrik José aka BLISS. The title of the track is Do You Remember How It Felt? At first I thought this movie was a hoax or a spoof but it turns out its real and its a documentary. Its really interesting and funny, its about a group of people who live 2 lives, their real life where they work and have a regular family, and their play life where they are part of a huge army of medieval warriors. Maybe we should setup the same thing here in Kuwait. [Link]
I guess only people who were into computers in the 80’s will get this. [Link]
Million Dollar Baby
I watched a Million Dollar Baby last night. It was a really good movie but if I had known the ending was going to be so sad I wouldn’t have watched it. I also understand now why people were saying the title of the movie was so terrible. I also got to watch LA Confidential yesterday. I had watched it when it first came out as a cinema copy video and I remember getting bored half way and turning it off. Yesterday I watched it all over again and I liked it a lot. The coolest part was that the mob boss Mickey was played by Paul Guilfoyle, the police captain on CSI. Speaking of which, the first episode of CSI NY will be on August 22nd on TV Land.
Commando Fans (Yeah the movie)
This site is crazy, I can’t believe there are actual hardcore fans of the movie Commando. It did bring some nice flashbacks of the movie though, I found this quote which I still remember from the movie:
Matrix: Remember, Sully, when I promised to kill you last?
Sully: That’s right, Matrix. You did.
Matrix: I lied.
Now I am going to go look for a Cobra fan site.. [Link]
I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Collateral yesterday. I really didn’t like Eternal Sunshine and I don’t understand how it was rated one of the best movies ever on IMDB. The movie just dragged too long and some of it was really cheesy. Collateral on the other hand was a really good movie. Tom Cruise was really great, I think this is one of his best roles ever, it really suited him. Jamie Foxx was also really cool, I still remember him from the days of In Living Color so its hard for me to accept he doesn’t have to be funny all the time, but in general I think he’s aged like some good old wine. He just keeps getting better.
The Machinist

Yesterday night I watched the movie The Machinist which stars Christian Bale (Batman Begins, American Psycho). I am not that big a fan of Christian Bale but he is a cool actor. So anyway when the movie started I spent the first 5 minutes trying to figure out if the actor we were watching was or wasn’t Christian Bale. It was incredible, Bale was like incredibly skinny, like you can see every single bone on his back and chest. Turns out for the movie he went down from 86KG down to 58! The guy is really fucking crazy, he is such an incredible actor for being that dedicated to the part. The movie was also great, there was some suspense at times which I usually hate but overall the movie with the ending was truly something. If you can get a hold of the movie definitely get it. Here is a link with pictures from the movie where you can see how skinny he was. [Link]
I watched The Aviator yesterday and Sideways. I was really disappointed with both the movies. Sideways was long and slow, I spent the last hour just forwarding through the movie. The Aviator was also long and slow and I nearly fell asleep watching it, Nataly fell asleep watching it. After watching the amazing movie Crash the other night I doubt I will be able to find another movie that will top it. I have 3 more movies to watch now, The Longest Yard, Eternal Sunshing of the Spotless Mind and Million Dollar Baby. Hope they turn out to be good.

Remember when I said Doom was Doomed? Well I guess I was right. I just watched the trailer and I have to say I would rather watch my brother play Doom 3 on the Xbox. [Link]
Just watched the trailer for the movie “The 40 Year Old Virgin”. Looks like a really fucking funny movie. Can’t wait till it comes out. [Link]
Since I installed the Xbox Media Center I started downloading movies from the web again. I stopped downloading movies along time ago because it was a pain watching them on my computer. Now with the Xbox Media Center I stream all the movies onto my TV in the living room. I downloaded 7 movies this weekend, Sin City, The Jacket, Monthy Python and the Holy Grail, The Ring Two, Napoleon Dynamite and Anchorman. I only managed to watch 3 movies though.
Sin City turned out to be great. I had totally forgotten how the actual comics were made up of short stories so I was glad to see this got transferred into the movies. Mickey Rourke was the best thing about the movie, I am glad his career is back on track now.
The Jacket was so so. My brother thought it was an amazing movie so I was expecting it to be so, but I found it un-eventual and slow. They could have done so much more with this movie. Adrien Brody is a good actor though, I like him.
Napoleon Dynamite was hilarious. I have never seen such sad looking characters in my whole life, they are the most incredibly dorky and geeky people you could ever meet, and they fucking kicked ass. Pedro is like the man!
Tonight I am probably going to watch Anchorman. I am also downloading the A-Team season 1, hopefully that will turn out to be as good as I remember it.
Overall the quality of the movies were really good, like DVD quality and all were actually DVD rips not in movie recordings. The only downside is that from all the movies I downloaded non of them have Dolby Digital so I am stuck watching all the movies in Stereo mode only.

Really cool 30 second flash cartoon of the movie Pulp Fiction re-enacted by bunnies. [Link]
House of Wax Out… of the Theaters
According to an email from Moe, the movie House of Wax was removed from all theaters in Kuwait by KNCC due to heavy pressure from the Ministry of Information. I have no clue why they would do this since the movie was already heavily cut, maybe Paris HIlton is just banned in Kuwait.
