Autonomous Vehicle Baqala

Spotted this in Dubai over the weekend. It’s an autonomous vehicle that just drives around until someone waves at it and then it stops. Once it stops you can then buy water and snacks from it.

Videos of Ahmadi from the 1950s

I have a series of old posts called “Life in Kuwait back in the 1950s” that still attracts some of the most amazing comments today by people who used to live in Ahmadi in the 50s. I’ve even previously posted about how a bunch of kids who grew up in Ahmadi together were able to reconnect after 60 years in the comments of one of these posts and now someone left another very interesting comment. Mike Green grew up in Kuwait in the early 50s and he converted some of his parents old 8mm film to digital and uploaded the footage to youtube. Below is his story along with the videos:

My Dad (Cliff Green) arrived in Kuwait in 1953, and the rest of the family left rainy Manchester in a Dakota the following year. My final time in Ahmadi was 1968 when I started work in the UK, and Dad left in 1971. I have converted some old Standard 8 film to digital and that along with some interspersed photos and modern film I have posted on YouTube.

Many of the “second generation” along with now very few older generation meet each year for an Ahmadi reunion which has been running now for nearly 50 years. In 2010 my sister and I visited Ahmadi on our way to Dubai and it was very strange to see the old haunts still there but there have been many changes to the housing (etc).

The Hubara Club has been renovated but there are still some remnants of the old days which were not destroyed during the invasion. Particularly (and how strange is this memory) the power socket on the outdoor stage is still the same one I used back in 1966 with Chris & Glyn Gustar, and Kerry Scott as our “holiday band” got into full swing – supporting, if I remember “The Twisters” I must consider putting down on paper more of the life we had as “privileged kids” during the 1950’s and early 60’s.

YouTube Premium Now Available in Kuwait

I spend more time on YouTube than I do Netflix which is why when YouTube launched their Premium ad-free service a few years ago in the US, I signed up to it right away. The cost was $9.99 a month and it was worth it since it meant I no longer had to watch long ads before and in the middle of my videos.

But last week YouTube Premium became available in Kuwait and for a cheaper price! YouTube Premium costs $5.99 if you live in Kuwait and a family account for 5 people costs just $8.99. So this morning I canceled my YouTube Premium on my US YouTube account and signed up to it again from my Kuwait YouTube account. $5.99 is a really good price if you hate all those YouTube ads.

If you want to sign up to Premium then click here.

Al Hamra Tower Got Flooded

I got a bunch of videos forwarded to me a while ago. Turns out a pipe burst in Al Hamra Tower earlier today and flooded the basement of the mall. This hasn’t been a good week for them, just a few days ago the whole building had a power outage and now this.

Al Sawaber Couldn’t be Saved

I was watching the video below and wondering if demolition had started on Al Sawaber, or if people were able to save it. Sadly as you’ll see by the end of the video, Al Sawaber couldn’t be saved.

Some 80s-90s Nostalgia

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ارشيف الزمن الجميل (@zmn_gmil) on

I came across the Instagram account @zmn_gmil that had some videos of Kuwait from the 80s and 90s which I hadn’t seen before. I went through the account and picked out a few videos I thought were worth sharing. One is embedded above, the rest are below.

The scene with the girl and her arm down the meat grinder (below) is probably why I never stuffed my hand inside one. All those old government-sponsored awareness videos I watched as a kid on KTV really stuck with me, even until today. It’s sad people don’t have that nowadays. I’ve seen so many parents, for example, let their kids hang out of the car’s sunroof, I’m sure if they knew how dangerous that could be they wouldn’t do it anymore. Anyway, check out the rest of the videos below.

Drone Footage of Flooded Highway

A friend sent me the drone footage above of the Fahaheel Expressway flooded in Mangaf. The highway is completely submerged underwater and looks like a river. It’s supposed to rain worse tonight… [YouTube]

Watch Fajer Eat

Not sure if you know this or not, but like watching people play video games is a huge thing, watching people eat is also a pretty huge, at least in Asia. The actual term for it is mukbang which is a combination of the Korean words for eating and broadcasting.

The first time I came across a video of someone eating was back in 2012 when I posted about Emmy who was sent a box filled with sweets and snacks from Kuwait to try. Nowadays though the videos I tend to watch don’t have any talking, they’re usually just of someone sitting in front of their phones and broadcasting themselves eating something. The only sound you’ll hear come from any crunching or slurping that’s taking place. An example is the video above which has 24 million views and is just of a guy eating some crispy fried chicken.

I’ve always found this fascinating so when a friend of mine called Fajer started doing something similar here in Kuwait I got super excited. I’ve known Fajer for years, she’s always been a big foodie and I always love going out to eat with her. Recently she started gaining popularity with her food eating videos. At first, she started posting them on her personal instagram account, but then she got invited by the popular local food account @q8food to do live broadcasts of herself eating there. That’s when she really started blowing up and now even has her own account @fajereats.

I honestly think its a brilliant idea and I’m not only saying that because she’s a friend. With every girl in Kuwait left and right trying to be a fashionista, I love how Fajer is having fun by just being herself in front of the camera, stuffing down a 5 patty burger because she feels like it.

So if you’re into mukbang or curious to check it out, she does a live broadcast a few times a week on @q8food and you can also check out some videos on her own account @fajereats.

How Your Mail Gets Sorted in Kuwait

Although Kuwait mail has improved over the past few years it still needs a ton of work. Imagine how great online shopping would be if we had a mail system that wasn’t so archaic. [YouTube]
