Former British ambassador’s wife attacked with boiling water at Kuwait restaurant

The wife of a former British ambassador to Kuwait suffered third-degree burns after having boiling water thrown on her in a restaurant by a suspected Islamist activist, The (London) Times reported Wednesday.

Dianne Wilton, whose husband Christopher Wilton served as British ambassador in Kuwait between 2002 and 2005, was dining with a member of the Gulf state’s royal family and other friends when a woman entered the restaurant and grabbed a pot of scalding water.

The woman proceeded to hurl the pot at Wilton’s table.

The boiling water hit Wilton on the neck, shoulder and back — causing her to be hospitalized for treatment. She was released from a Kuwaiti hospital Tuesday night and will fly back to the UK for more treatment Thursday, the Times reported.

“She was extremely shaken up,” said her husband, the former ambassador.

“She’s all right but traumatized that this could happen at all. The assumption is [the attacker] singled out a table where Arab men were dining with obviously Western women.”

The attacker managed to run from the restaurant without being apprehended. [Source]

Haven’t read about this anywhere else yet so not sure how accurate the story is. But out of curiosity what kind of restaurant has “a pot of scalding water” lying around?

Thanks Najib

Wolf Designs available in Kuwait

I’m a fan of Wolf Designs products mainly because they’re a family owned business that dates back nearly 200 years and also because their products are pretty affordable and well made. I purchased a Wolf Designs watch box from Amazon awhile back and then a few months ago I emailed them to find out if there were any stores in London that carried their brand (there wasn’t) which is why I was pretty surprised when I found out a local place called Violet Concept Store carried them.

I passed by the store yesterday honestly not really expecting much since I figured they’d have a couple of items and that they’d be overpriced but I turned out to be wrong. They had a pretty large collection of Wolf Designs watch boxes and winders and they were very reasonably priced compared to Amazon. To give you a rough idea about their prices, the watch box I bought from Amazon cost around KD30 and another KD30 to ship it with Aramex while they’re selling the exact same box for just KD35. It was a Homer Simpson “Doh!” moment but they only recently opened while I bought my box over a year ago so I didn’t feel too bad.

So if you’re interested, they’re located in Sanabil Tower (near Amiri Hospital in Kuwait City) and they’re open only on weekdays from 2pm to 8pm. They also carry a small collection of Wolf Designs jewelery boxes and drawer inserts if that interests you. Here is a link to their website [Link]

Kuwait Times iPhone App

I downloaded the Kuwait Times iPhone App last night and so far I think it’s pretty cool. Visually the app doesn’t look that great or appealing but I am finding it pretty practical to use. My favorite feature in the app is the ability to easily move over to the next article once you’re done reading it without having to go back to the main list. Sounds like a trivial thing but I’ve seen news apps that don’t have this feature for some odd reasons.

The app is free and you can download it from the App Store by either searching for Kuwait Times or by clicking [Here]

Kuwait nearly last in environmental performance index

According to the Environmental Performance Index done by Yale University, Kuwait was one of the weakest performers and came in 126 out of 132 countries. What’s confusing is that Lebanon came in 94th place but the pollution there is so bad that we recently had an incident where one river turned red while another turned white!

So other than the recent tire issue, the desert pollution and the Mishrif sewage problem, what else is really so bad that we rank this low? I’m not surprised we rank low just surprised it’s at the very bottom of the list. [Link]

Kuwaiti official tasered after urinating on Tony Blair’s doorstep

Diplomatic protection officers came across the Arabic man as they patrolled outside Mr Blair’s £4.3 million townhouse in Connaught Square, Belgravia, central London in the early hours.

When they asked the man, who appeared to be drunk, to stop urinating he allegedly refused to cooperate and a scuffle broke out.

Officers eventually discharged the 50,000 volt taser in order to place the suspect, who spoke little English, under arrest.

However the man collapsed and had to be taken to hospital, where it emerged he was a Kuwaiti government official, Ayedh Alrashidi.

Such a strange incident. [Link]

Thanks Uzair

Kuwait’s nuclear power dilema

I say lets go for solar and nuclear energy and turn Kuwait into an electric hub that would supply the region with electricity for a fee.

Rumor: Chick-fil-A not coming to Kuwait

According to a source of mine I found out that Alshaya was trying to bring the very popular franchise Chick-fil-A to the region but the deal fell through. Supposedly one of the terms they couldn’t agree on was the fact that Chick-fil-A wanted to close on Sundays (they’re a very Christian company). Alshaya was trying to convince them to change that rule for the region but Chick-fil-A wasn’t backing down and the deal fell apart. It sucks but I like the fact Alshaya were trying to get the Chick-fil-A franchise.

Help save the animals in Kuwait

YOU CAN HELP US SAVE ANIMALS IN KUWAIT
DIWANIYA AT AWARE CENTER
Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
by Kuwaiti animal-rescuer Nadia Al Kandari and local photojournalist Claudia Farkas Al Rashoud

With the inhumane ongoing official policy of poisoning stray dogs and cats, the status of animal rights in Kuwait has reached a new low. Added to that, the widespread practice of dog fighting, illegal importation and breeding of wild animals that are unsuitable or dangerous as pets, dismal conditions in the animal section of the Friday Market, and other unpunished acts of animal cruelty all tarnish Kuwait’s reputation in the international community. However, there are caring and active Kuwaitis, along with compassionate expats, who are striving to make things better for these innocent creatures.

Are there alternative, more human methods of stray animal population control? Of course there are! Are there laws to protect animals in Kuwait? Yes, they do exist but need to be enforced. Is there anything you can do to help prevent cruelty to animals? Yes, definitely! Please attend our diwaniya on animal rights in Kuwait, add your voice to the discussion, and become part of the solution. The AWARE Center is in Surra, Block 3, St. 50, Villa 84

Kuwait 5 Aside League

Kuwait 5 Aside is a new sporting venture, one that builds on the success of the outdoor football pitches. Salem Haidar the owner of Kuwait 5 Aside noticed a lack of structured football in Kuwait so he came up with the idea to start a 5 aside league.

By being part of a league you can playing more competitively but what I thought was more interesting is the fact you get to play in a large flood lit indoor and air conditioned football pitch. That means you could play football all year round no matter how bad the weather is outside.

According to the league rules, each team should have minimum of 7 players and they’re hoping to get a maximum of 140 teams to provide leagues running 6 days a week. The games are from 6 to 11pm and each game lasts 45 minutes. The cost is KD156 per player which would come out to around KD3 a game since there will be 52 games a year. If you’re interested to find out more check out the Kuwait 5 Aside website [Here]

Kuwait not that happy

According to the first World Happiness Report launched at the United Nations, Kuwait came 31st in the world but behind UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. They used a number of measurements to come up with this figure and I downloaded the full report to find out more details but honestly it’s 158 pages long and it wasn’t written by Stephen King so I skipped it.

Now the reason I’m posting this is I found it a bit surprising that Saudi Arabia scored better than both Kuwait and Qatar. I would have imagined UAE first followed by Qatar, Kuwait and then Saudi but that isn’t the case. You can read the Arabian Business article on this [Here] or you can download the full report from [Here]
