Soundflavor DJ for iTunes

Soundflavor DJ serves as your personal DJ that automatically selects and plays songs from your library based on your personal tastes and the music you’re listening to. It also makes it easy to create great playlists from your library, find new music “by sound,” and to rediscover great songs you own but may have forgotten about.

Sounds really cool and I was about to download it but guess what? Its only available for Windows XP users and will not work on Macs! [Link]

Fetch Art for iTunes

One of the coolest features of iTunes 7 is the album cover browser. Problem is if you don’t have the album art its pretty useless. iTunes does come with an option called “Get Album Artwork” but you need an iTunes music store account to get it working and to get an iTunes music store account you need a US credit card. Sucks but there is some good news. Before iTunes 7 when there was no “Get Album Artwork” option I used to use a script called Fetch Art to download the album covers. I just tried it now and it is still working with iTunes 7 so I figured some people might find this script usefull. Its only works on Macs though so PC users need to find another option. [Link]

update: I just found this other software which seems cool while trying to find a Windows version. [Link]

update 2: PC users, here are 2 programs that downloads art. [Link 1] [Link 2]

Hazel the Mac Finder Organizer

Hazel

My desktop is cluttered with a ton of jpgs, urls, txt files and other random shit. In fact, the majority of Mac users desktops are cluttered. Its a Mac thing.

This is where Hazel comes into play. Hazel can help you keep your desktop and any other folder organized. You could create rules that will tell Hazel to do a certain thing once these rules are met. For example, you could tell it that any JPG that is placed in the Desktop to automatically take it and place it in the Pictures folder. Or if you find a movie file place it the movie folder. You could also set rules based on time, for example you could tell it to delete files from the trash that have been there for more then a week. Its really flexible and you could really do a lot with it.

Problem is its not free, but what I am doing is trying it out and if it turns out the software is actually practical I will pay for it. Check it out. [Link]

Introducing Vista 2.0

Vista 2

I love the way how Apple always manages to find a cool way of attacking Microsoft. Tonight is the Worldwide Developers Conference where Apple will be introducing some new products and someone managed to take a picture of a banner for the new Mac OS which has the headline “Introducing Vista 2.0”. If you didn’t get what it means its basically taking a shot at the upcoming Microsoft Vista (the new Windows) which is already more then 2 years late. Basically the poster is saying that OSX (Macs operating system) is already way more advanced then Vista. [Link]

update: another banner reads “Redmond has its own cat. A copycat.”

iPhoto for Documents

I found this cool Mac software via Digg called Kip. What is Kip? According to the description on their website, every house has cardboard boxes full of receipts, important medical records and old letters. Kip finally gives you a tool to keep all these documents in one place, instantly retrievable and searchable.

Whats also cool about Kip is that it looks and works like iPhoto. You can tag your documents so you can later find what you want quickly. I am going to use it to scan some of my receipts, contracts and letters which should turn out cool. Its also free so check it out. [Link]

WriteRoom

WriteRoom

I think I finally found a replacement for TextEdit and its called WriteRoom. This is how the creators describe it:

For Mac users who enjoy the simplicity of a typewriter, but live in the digital world. WriteRoom is a full screen, distraction free, writing environment. Unlike standard word processors that focus on features, WriteRoom is just about you and your text.

You set the software to full screen and thats it, you are suddenly in a different place. You could also change the background color to blue and the text to white and pretend you are Doogie Howser. Whatever colors you go with, the most important thing is this software is free! [Link]
