Ruby’s

Last week Nat had dinner with some of her friends at a new restaurant that just opened up in Kuwait City called Ruby’s. She had a good experience and suggested that we pass by for lunch yesterday.

From outside the place doesn’t look like much since the shops and buildings next to it are pretty old but once you walk into Ruby’s it’s a completely different atmosphere. The place is pretty spacious and has a very cozy look and feel to it. We sat down in a comfy corner and the waitress brought us the menu. The first thing that impressed me was with how minimal their menu was. They have only 3 salads, 3 panini’s, 3 pastas and 3 burgers which I thought was very brave. Restaurants here seem to get the impression you need to have a million items on your menu but you really don’t since it’s about the quality not quantity.

Nat ordered the Mango Pumpkin Chicken Salad while I ordered the Bronte Burger on my first visit and the Chicken and Mango Chutney Panini on my second (had lunch there yesterday and today). Nat really loved her salad and I thought my burger which had a sweet chili sauce was really well made. It was delicious and on my second visit I was really tempted to order it again but decided to try something else and I am glad I did. As much as I thought their burger was amazing the Chicken and Mango Chutney Panini was even better. The Mango Chutney was sweet and gave the panini amazing flavor, I really loved it. I also ordered their chocolate dessert on my second visit and although it was good, I would prefer the Chocolate Fondant at Life with Cacao or the Chocolate Pudding at Slider Station instead.

Their prices are very decent. Their menu ranges from KD2.250 for their cheapest Salad up to KD3.750 for their Shrimp in Linguine which is their most expensive dish.

Ruby’s has been open I think for around 2 weeks only. They still don’t have a sign outside and they will be installing their Knet machine hopefully this week according to the waitress. I’ve drawn a map to the location which you can view [Here]. The service is great, the place is cozy and the food is amazing. I highly recommend the place.

Update: Currently (as of December 29, 2010) they open from 3PM to 11PM. According to the employees there within the next 10 days they will start opening from 11AM to 11PM. Their phone number is 22496526,

IHOP coming to Kuwait

Just found out Alshaya are bringing IHOP to Kuwait. IHOP stands for International House of Pancakes and is an American breakfast chain. I don’t think they’re open anywhere outside of North America.

In non-food related news, Harvey Nichols will be opening their first store in Kuwait in Avenues Phase III. Originally Harvey Nichols said they were opening the store in the summer of 2011 but not sure if that’s still the case since I thought Phase III still needed more time then that to be completed.

Thanks damdy

The Prick Test

During the summer while in Lebanon I posted about how I found out I was allergic to dogs by doing a “prick test”. Well there was a lot of interest on that subject so I figured I would share this information with you. First of all for those of you who don’t know what a prick test is, basically they write on both your arms with a pen a variety of things that cause allergies like cats, dogs, dust mites etc… and then they put a concentrated drop of that item next to the corresponding name and they prick you. After 10 minutes whichever spot swells then thats what you have an allergy to.

So anyway I was recently having breathing problems I called International Clinic, booked an appointment with the lung Dr and then passed by. She asked me if I had allergies and I told her over the summer I did a prick test and found out I was allergic to dogs. She told me I might have an allergy to pollens. Turns out every country has different pollens, for example in France they have apple trees, in Lebanon pine trees, in Kuwait it’s completely different type of plants as well. The test I had in Lebanon most probably covered only the pollens that are popular in Lebanon. She told me she would give me the prick test again.

When I took the prick test in Lebanon they tested me for 11 different kind of things I could be allergic to. The one I did at International Clinic had 26 different item, more than double of that in Lebanon. The Dr was also right, turned out I was allergic to two more things other than dogs, I was allergic to palm trees and another sort of weed pollen that grows everywhere in Kuwait.

Regarding my allergies, she told me I either had to get rid of my dog or start on a dog allergy vaccine which within 3 years would cure me from my dog allergy. The palm tree and weed allergy is a seasonal thing and could be solved with medication so I didn’t really need to get a vaccine for them.

So if anyone is interested in the prick test you can get one done at International Clinic. The cost of the prick test was KD40. I also paid a KD20 consultation fee but not sure if that’s the same for everyone (I also did a respiratory test among other things).

The new Radisson SAS

Starting December 22nd SAS will be closing down for renovations. The pictures above and below are 3D renderings of how the hotel will look like once the renovation is completed. I originally thought it was going to be a minor face lift of the interior but it looks like its going a major revamp. Sadly this also means Peacock, the best Chinese restaurant in Kuwait will be closed for at least a year. [Link]

via Desert Girl

Update: According to the owners of the place, the menu of the Peacock will be transferred to Rangoli so you can eat the Chinese food at Rangoli. Cool!

Update2: Turns out that the Peacock menu did not get transferred to Rangoli, instead the Al Bustan menu did.

We’re in trouble

The cops now have new portable cameras and by the looks of it they will be very difficult to spot. Judging by the picture above they will be used to catch the people who drive on emergency lanes which is cool but I believe they will also be able to capture speeders.

The Ministry pointed out that the new radar is accurate and can be transported from one place to another easily, in addition to having the video and photographic characteristics, which confirms the fact of the violation. It stated that the mobile radar is currently working with high efficiency in many locations, especially places of high traffic density, including schools.

Desert Ops Tactical Paintball

Back in May I posted about MILSIM and how I took part in one of their Tactical Military Simulation Games. It was amazing! I was totally surprised we had something like that in Kuwait, it was lots of fun, the weapons were very cool and realistic and the location the simulation took place at (old abandoned prison) was something right out of Call of Duty. Now this year my friends at MILSIM (which is short for Military Simulation) have introduced something new called Desert Ops Tactical Paintball for the trigger happy people. Unlike the Tactical Military Simulation Games which require a lot of patience, skill, strategy and discipline, Desert Ops Tactical Paintball is a faster paced game that’s easier to get into right from the start.

The MILSIM Paintball is located in an area near Mutlaa. You can sign up and come as an individual or group. Price is KD15 for a full day of playing. A bag of 500 balls is for KD10 and can be shared amongst the players. You need to book in advance and you can do that from their website [Here]

They have another field opening up at Shaab Park in mid January. It’s going to be the first Milsim Airsoft and Milsim Tactical Paintball field in the region. Basically real life Call of Duty stuff and it’s going to be located right near my home so I can’t wait.

For the advanced players who are interested in the Tactical Military Simulation Games (pic above) which I took part in back in May, if you’re willing to take a 2 day training program at desert Ops to get familiar with the MILSIM game play and gear then you can also email them [Here]

Benihana now open

The American Japanese chain Benihana opened up yesterday for business and I passed by today and took a quick peek. The place is much larger than I expected since although it has a small shop front it actually expands quite a lot to the back and sides. I didn’t eat there but took a look at their menu and the prices seemed pretty good if not cheap in some cases at first glance. They had 6 pieces of crab maki for example for KD1.500, 6 pieces of California for KD2.500 and their most expensive special maki was like KD5. Their teppanyaki dishes ranged in price as well with some of their more expensive lobster dishes hitting around KD16. I’ll probably pass by sometime this week and try them out. I usually enjoy sitting at the sushi bar and their sushi bar looked pretty good and big.

Benihana is located in phase II of the Avenues, in the area behind the escalator next to Dean & Deluca. They officially launch on the 20th but are open for business right now.

Note: Picture above is from last week before they opened. They’re the shop in the corner with the red sign.

Caribou Coffee + BlackBerry amazing offer

A reader emailed me telling me that Caribou Coffee and BlackBerry had teamed up for an offer where if you show them your BlackBerry phone you get a KD2.5 voucher. Luckily I got the email while I was having lunch at Leila (Salhiya) and there was a Caribou Coffee right next door. After lunch I decided to pass by and see if it was true or not and if there was a catch. Turned out the offer was actually better than what the reader had emailed me.

Go to a Carribou Coffee at one of the following locations:
360 Mall
Avenues Mall
Al Kout Mall
Sahiya Mall

You will find a BlackBerry representative. All you do is show him your BlackBerry and fill out a coupon (your name, phone number, email) and you will get the following in return:

– Free coffee
– Free donut
– Free original BlackBerry rubber sleeve for your BB
– KD2.5 voucher
– A chance to win a BlackBerry Torch

You don’t have to buy anything to get all the above. I went in got all the above and didn’t even take my wallet out of my pocket. Now that’s a really good deal. The offer is available every Thursday this month only.

Thanks Babar

Kuwait Little Theater Documentary

Just found this documentary about the KLT on their website. It’s really well made and interesting to watch (they’ve been around since 1948!). The documentary is divided into two parts, the first one is above and the second part if below. This is the description posted with the videos:

“From its humble beginnings as the KUOCO Independent Players in 1948 to its present day position as the leading amateur theater company in the region, Kuwait Little Theater (KLT) has undergone quite a transformation. Through archive footage, photos, interviews, and video clips dating back to the early days of The KLT, this documentary offers a fascinating stroll down memory lane of the busiest and best little theatre in Kuwait.

Join us on a journey back to times when sets were painted out in the 40 degree summer sun, theatrical lighting consisted of car headlamps, and staging a live performance in Kuwait meant closing down the local cinema for a night. Then, stroll through six decades of development as the Little Theatre is born and raised by a band of enthusiastic volunteers.

‘KLT – Celebrating 60 Years’ takes you on a journey, not only of the development of amateur theatre in Kuwait but also of the country at large as its members battle the climate, the culture and the aftermath of war to bring live entertainment to the stage year after year.”

Produced By – PANORAMA PICTURES (A division of Agrim Projects Services)
Script writer, Editor & Director – SONU SHARMA

A taste of Japan

Oishi Nippon at Marina Crescent is opening today. Nat’s currently designing their menu and from what I saw they will have Japanese fruits, desserts and coffee and tea.

An interesting fact, I found out that in Japan fruits are sometimes given as gifts. I thought that was an interesting and healthy concept which I might pick up on since Oishi Nippon will be selling the Japanese fruits I had previous posted about. They even package them up as gifts for you.

Update: Nat just told me they opened up yesterday.

Update2: Sorry I mixed up in my post above. Turns out the place is called Kei Cafe and not Oishi Nippon. Oishi Nippon is the name of the fruit company.

More info on Kuwait’s emergency medical services

Last week I posted about how you could order an ambulance online via Kuwait’s EMS website. Well someone from the EMS commented with the following bit of information:

Thank You For The feedback..
I work for E.M.S Kuwait and this is a Non-Emergency Ambulance request, so in case of emergency you can always use the number 112. The form only requires you to fill the basic requests in order to avoid any sort of confusion like the name of the patient, age, sex and the location where the patient is located and the location to where he is to be transported. The code at the end is to make it secure from spammers.

As soon as some one clicks submit the form will be visible in the control room located in Subhan. An operator will then call to confirm that the request is a genuine case and will arrange the ambulance at the specified time for the genuine cases.

The system Installed in Subhan E.M.S is a world class one, so if anyone of you has the time please visit us in Subhan. All the ambulances in Kuwait are now fitted with laptops with a navigation system installed. Its not a regular navigation software alone but also contains a lot of other information that is passed on from the Control room like the location, age, name, condition of the patient etc. There is a new pre question and answer software as well. In emergency cases the operator will give the necessary instruction to the patient or the third party on how to do basic life support procedures like CPR. The system is developed by CyberMAK which is the I.T wing of M.A Kharafi.

Kuwait Blogs Tip

Not sure how many people know this but you can customize the main icons on the bottom of the Kuwait Blogs app. In the latest version I have my blog, Fahad’s blog, Buz Fairy and Me Blogging but you can set up any of your favorite blogs instead. All you need to do is click on “More” and then click on “Edit” on the top right. Now you can just drag and drop your favorite blogs down to the bottom bar.

There is a minor bug currently where you can’t read the names of the 4 most bottom blogs in the edit page. I couldn’t figure out how to fix that honestly. From now on for every update I will have 3 random blogs other than mine set up by default at the bottom. They will most probably be blogs which I think are good but aren’t getting the attention they should be getting.

If you haven’t downloaded the Kuwait Blogs app already click [Here]

Kuwait Blogs 2.0

I’ve updated the Kuwait Blogs app now to version 2.0. Basically I’ve fixed a ton of bugs and also updated the bloggers list by removing inactive blogs and adding new ones. The total amount of blogs in the App has increased and is now 21. Here is the list of blogs:

2:48PM
360 Dewan
4th Ring Road
Ansam
Banana Q8

Buz Fairy

Another major update is the graphics. All the icons were redone in high resolution so they will look much better on the iPhone 4’s. Previously they were looking a bit blurry but now they’re back to looking extremely sharp. You can download the update from the App Store or if you haven’t downloaded and installed the App before then you can find it in the store by searching for Kuwait Blogs or by clicking [Here]
