Shawerma Review: Kabab Al Hajat

Kabab Al Hajat are know in Kuwait for their Kababs but recently they started making shawerma and I was curious to know how well it faired up.

Anyone who has ever been to Kabab Al Hajat and tried ordering food will know that there usually its extremely crowded and wait is long. Thankfully the shawerma station there has its own cashier and so is never full. When I passed by they only had chicken shawerma but the guy told me they were going to add meat also soon. I ordered two chicken and a coke, each shawerma costs 250fils and the coke 100fils.

Firstly it is important to point out I had my shawerma at lunch time. Very very few places serve shawerma during the day for some reason, I can only think of maybe 2 or 3 places max that serve shawerma for lunch so Kabab Al Hajat don’t have much competition while the sun is still out.

How did the shawerma taste? Well the garlic wasn’t strong which I usually mark as a bad thing. This time though I actually appreciated it because I was having shawerma during my lunch break and I didn’t want to get back to the office stinking of garlic. The overall flavor of the shawerma though was average, nothing in it stuck out as being amazing and there was no flavor that tasted weird or out of place. They use small Arabic bread not the hot dog one (samoon).

For the final score I would give it a 3.5 out of 5. Since they serve shawerma for lunch I think thats a great thing and I would pass by again for sure. At night though I would rather drive a bit further and get a shawerma from Badar Al Badoor.

Back in Kuwait

I got back from Lebanon yesterday night. My flight arrived at around 11:30PM which was around the same time Star Academy Prime was on LBC. I wanted to watch it to see if we made it on the program since they were going to talk about the making of the MTC commercial. According to k.thekuwaiti I did make it on the program but only for around 4 seconds and I was like in the background behind Shada. Not bad considering I was the only one from my agency that actually made the final cut and appeared on the show.

The MTC Commercial Shoot

Today I had the MTC Atheer commercial shoot with Ilham Al Madfai and Shada from Star Academy. I woke up at 7AM and was on the set by 8. The whole shoot took place in an old house/museum here in Lebanon and it was a really beautiful location. The shoot started at 8:30AM and ended 16 hours later at 12:30AM. It was extremely exhausting with only 1 short break for lunch.

Its now 2:15AM and I just got back to the hotel room. I am posting three pictures from todays shoot for now but will try to post more pictures tomorrow with more details.

The Chili Dog Showdown

Nathans or Hardees, which of the two has the better chili dog?

THE NATHANS CHILI DOG
Chili Hot Dog Nathans

THE HARDEES CHILI DOG
Chili Hot Dog Hardees

PRICE
Nathans Chili Dog: 750 fils
Hardees Chili Dog: 500 fils

SIZE
Both Hardees and Nathans have similarly sized hot dogs. The Nathans is just slightly bigger but not by that much.

LOOKS
Hardees looks visually more attractive and colorful while the Nathans hot dog looks dull and stale.

SPEED
Nathans hot dogs take longer then Hardees to prepare. I ordered my hot dog from Nathans Souk Sharq then I went to Hardees ordered a hot dog, I picked it up and went back to Nathans and my hot dog was still not ready. Also while waiting at Nathans I had to stand there listening to the manager making fun out of people who pass him. He’s an idiot.

TASTE
Nathans Chili Dog: The chili is terrible and the onions tasteless. The hot dogs meat itself is tastier then the Hardees meat but everything else tasted bad. I even ordered a plain hot dog with just ketchup and mustard and I don’t know what ketchup they use but its one of the worst tasting ones I have ever tried. A real mess seriously.

Hardees Chili Dog: Although the actual hot dog itself tastes a bit better at Nathans, the chili used at Hardees is much better and the mustard and onions are also better tasting. Even the bread feels softer and fresher.

CONCLUSION
I believe the Hardees Chili Dog is a better hot dog overall. Firstly it costs 50% less then the Nathans one Nathans hot dog costs 50% more. Its also visually more attractive, quicker to order and in general is a better tasting hot dog. I would not have a Nathans hot dog again, not unless they get better ingredients.

Banners, Banners and More Banners

As you probably noticed I have a new sponsor, Al Ghalia Group who are based in Bahrain. This means I now have a total of 5 banners on my blog which I won’t deny is a lot. I have tried my best not to clutter up the blog too much with banners and this is honestly the best I can do.

Like you I would rather this blog had no banners at all but the banners are there for a reason… they provide me with extra income. I understand these banners decrease the aesthetics of the blog but the money is actually pushing me to continue blogging.

Blogging daily is difficult, its a lot of pressure and it takes time. I currently try to post a minimum of 3 posts a day so I could remain consistent. If I didn’t have the income coming in from the banners I might have stopped blogging ages ago or at least I would have stopped posting as often.

Now money usually is not a comfortable subject to discuss but this is a blog and I think its important for me to be as open as I can with my readers.

How much money am I making? Well I have decided to share with everyone a PDF file I send to people who request information on advertising on the blog. Its my rate card and you can download it by clicking [Here]. I wasn’t sure if I should make this information public or not but I figured if I was a reader I would be curious to know how much money this blog is making the same way I am curious to know how much money engadet or digg make. Well as you can see from the rate card this blog is currently making nearly $3000 a month. This is a good chunk of cash and I hope now everyone understands why I have so many banners here.

I have not sold out. Just because I am making money from the blog doesn’t mean I have sold out. All I am doing is cashing in on my 15 minutes of fame. When something sucks I will still say it sucks and when something is good I will still say its good.

Anyway it feels awkward sharing this information but I hope everyone especially my long time readers understand the reason for all these banners. Thank you!

update: If anyone has any questions you can ask by leaving a comment below and I will reply to it.

One reader, Biohazard asked an important question which is Can I bash a sponsors product? The answer is simply no. When Alghanim Automotive were my sponsors I told them that if a cars they lent me to test drive sucked then I would post negative stuff about it. So what they did was just lend me their best cars. Now though what I do is tell my sponsors that if they lend me a product to try out and it turns out to suck I will just not mention the product at all. This way they aren’t afraid to send me more stuff to try out.

update 2: I changed the location of the new banner because of complaints. If you prefer the new location over the previous one please leave a comment below. In case you missed it here is a screen shot of the previous location. [Screen Shot]

Bird flu transmission and infection

As most of you probably know by now there have been a number of Bird Flu cases reported in Kuwait. The big question of course is are we in any danger? How can we contract the Avian flu? Well I did some research and from what I understood the only way you can contract bird flu is through their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Meaning unless you are planning on making out with a bird you should be pretty safe. [Source]

Pierre Marcolini

pierre marcolini

Yesterday I took a day off work so I could go to the Pierre Marcolini event at Hilton. It started off with lunch at Teatro followed by a chocolate presentation at the Song Bird cafe at 2PM. The presentation which I thought would be boring turned out to be pretty cool and informative. It was like watching an episode on Discovery Channel on how chocolate is made except the presenter was Pierre Marcolini himself. I guess it was like watching the Teutul family talk about how they made choppers minus all the shouting and banging.

I now understand the difference between good chocolate and bad chocolate. The presentation was a walk through on how Pierre Marcolini chocolate is made. It turns out they are the only ones in Belgium who actually create chocolate starting from the cocoa beans all the way to the chocolate bar. Its a long process but in the end you get the best product. They even passed around chocolate in its various unfinished stages so we could smell and at one point taste.

pierre marcolini

Once the presentation was over me and Nat went up to Pierre and had a little chat with him. Since he only spoke French, Nat was my translator. I made her ask him if he had a favorite commercial chocolate like Crunch, Mars, Twix etc.. He replied telling her that he didn’t eat commercial chocolate but every now and then he would try new products just out of curiosity. He also told her he does like eating chocolate from small chocolatiers in France and Italy. We then asked him what he thought of Kuwait. He told us he had just been in Japan and now he was in Kuwait and the difference in culture is huge and he loves that. He said he loves experiencing new cultures because he learns new things. For example now that he has visited Kuwait he is considering making chocolate with coffee.

He was a very friendly guy with good sense of humor so the whole thing was really enjoyable. In the end they gave us some chocolates as a thank you for coming gift and we then left the place. It was a cool experience and I am glad I went.

Charger Vs G-Class

charger g-class

Me and a friend at work both purchased some pimped out RC cars from Fantasy World. I got the Mercedes G-Class and he got the Dodge Charger. We built like a makeshift ramp in the office and we were flying the cars off it. The cars although costing only KD8 are pretty responsive and fast.. for their size. My G-Class out performed the Charger in everything except when it came to making donuts but thats because the Charger has a longer wheelbase.

Jazeera Airways tricked me

Me and Nat just got to our Jazeera Airways gate and noticed they were boarding people onto the plane. I thought that was weird since it was like 50 minutes ahead of time. Nat wanted to get coffee I told her we didn’t have time they were boarding the flight.

We checked into our gate, gave them our boarding pass and they then led us into a very tiny over crowded room located just before the door to the plane. I was like WTF? Turns out they weren’t boarding the passengers just making it look like they were boarding to the people who were still outside the gate. We were tricked!

So we are standing in this tiny over crowded room with barely any seating while right outside this door lied the main boarding lounge for the gate. How messed up, they herded us all into this tiny room just so it looks like we are boarding so people would come in. I am really pissed. I told the Jazeera guy I was going to be outside getting coffee, he took my boarding pass and kept it with him. Now they can basically leave without me.

This is really a cheap ass move by Jazeera Airways. Can’t believe they are still shoving more people into that tiny room its really packed!

Shawerma Review: IKEA

ikea shawerma

Sweden is famous for their meatballs so when IKEA started making and selling shawermas I was eager to try it.

First time I had the shawerma in the new IKEA branch at The Avenues mall I didn’t like it. They mixed vegetables with my shawerma and I hate places that do that. The vegetables which is usually made up of onions and some green stuff (I don’t know what its called) over powers the chicken flavor. So next time I passed by IKEA I ordered the shawerma plain with just garlic.

How was it? Its edible.

The biggest problem I had with their shawerma is the bread. I think there is too much bread for the shawerma. The solution I would recommend is to either increase the quantity of chicken in the bread or decrease the size of the bread itself. The chicken tasted good and the garlics presence was felt but not over done. If only they weren’t so stingy.

Final score I settled for was 3 out of 5. The shawerma costs 250fils which is great specially since the place is extremely clean. They also have an offer combo, coke plus shawerma for 350fils. The location is crap, no one is going to drive up to IKEA just for their shawerma of course. Overall its not bad for their first try. I just hope they start filling up the bread with more chicken.

Further issues with Showtime

Late last month I posted about how Showtime were still taking money from me every month even though I canceled my account. Well I finally spoke to a guy at Showtime who told me he would solve my problem by making sure they cancel my subscription and then refund me two months worth of subscription fees by the next day. I was like fine, great.

A few days later I call the guy up again telling him that I still hadn’t received the refund. He told me he had deposited the money into my account and it should be there. After further investigation it turns out the guy deposited my refund in the wrong account! He told me that its too late now and he couldn’t take it back and that I should contact the other person and try to get my money off of him. I told him I wouldn’t do that and that he should solve the problem. He then sarcastically told me fine, he would pay me the refund from his salary. I was like whatever you want to do, do it. I just want my refund.

Since that day I haven’t been able to get a hold of the guy again. He won’t return my calls and I have been leaving messages on his voice mail and still no reply. I don’t think my troubles with Showtime will ever finish.

update: I just got off the phone with the COO of Global Direct. He told me I will get my refund within the next 2 days. I told him that it wasn’t about the money but the actual process I had to go through to get my account canceled. He assured me that Showtime was going through a major restructuring of the customer service department and all the problems I faced will be fixed.

My Dubai Trip 11/06

batuta

I found out last minute I had to go down to Dubai for work and since Gitex had just started, finding a room was practically impossible. Finally though the travel agent came through and found me an empty room and booked it. I have to say it was the crappiest hotel I had ever been to. The whole place looked like a bathroom and smelled like one that had just been cleaned. They had these air fresheners that spray perfume automatically located all over the hotel but they just reminded me too much of bathrooms.

If the look of the hotel wasn’t enough to put me off, before we got the room key they made us sign a paper which said if any of our stuff goes missing in the rooms that they wouldn’t be responsible for it. Not only that but inside the room there was a framed photocopy of a similar paper stating the same thing and another A4 sheet located on the table also saying the same thing. As you can imagine I didn’t want to leave anything in the room and I didn’t, I kept my backpack with me the whole time.

Traffic in Dubai because of Gitex was just a disaster. It was always at a complete standstill, a real mess. One cab driver told me things get even worse in February during the shopping festival.

The weather in Dubai was also a lot hotter then Kuwait. Its currently freezing here. Froze my ass off tonight while leaving Maki at Marina, even had a jacket on and it wasn’t enough!

I wanted to visit Gitex but I finished my work around 8PM and Gitex closes at 7. Why can’t they stay open till like 10 or something like exhibitions that are held in Kuwait? Its like people need to take a day off work to pass by them.

I went to Ibn Battuta mall. Its not as big as Mall of the Emirates but its still a lot bigger then Marina Mall and the whole thing felt very Las Vegasishy.

I still can’t believe I was in Dubai and didn’t get to pass by Gitex!
