“I am here” is a short film (ad) for the architecture firm SSH that showcases their work including the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Center and the soon to open Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre in Shaab. In their red, white and blue uniforms, Kuwait’s first female ice hockey team is training hard in the desert ahead of their debut world tournament later this month.

Affectionately dubbed the “ice ladies” by local media, athletes in hijab or with their hair hastily tied in topknots pull on their helmets before taking to the rink in the Kuwaiti capital — where temperatures top 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) on a sunny October afternoon. [Source]

The team will play their first international game on October 30 at the Ice Hockey World Championship in Bangkok.

Failaka Island was recently featured in the New York Times “The Daily 360”. Th video is composed of a bunch of short 360 degrees videos stitched together which you can move around in. Check it out above or in full screen on the NYT website [Here]

Last week police arrested a man who stabbed his wife at least seven times and the video of the arrest went viral. I just got to watch the video now and found it a bit confusing since in the video it looks like civilians are arresting the murderer, while the cop is on his phone the whole time.

The video starts off with a police officer ordering a man to surrender while he had his Apple earbuds on and the phone in his hand recording the whole incident. While he is recording the video, two men in civilian clothing get closer to the man, one of them looks to be carrying a police baton. Once the man surrenders and lies down on his stomach, the two civilians proceed to secure the man down and then one of them goes to get handcuffs before coming back and handcuffing the man. Finally a second policeman comes into the video and hands something over to one of the civilians.

Now my educated guess is at least one of the civilians is actually a cop himself, probably off duty or undercover, but its still weird that the first cop was on his phone the whole time. Check out the video above to get an idea of what I’m talking about.

Sam Chui, the world’s most followed aviation blogger recently flew on one of the new Kuwait Airways planes and reviewed it. Overall he really liked the new planes although he had major issues with the Kuwait Airport, but don’t we all. I’m surprised Kuwait Airways didn’t bump him up to first class from business since it didn’t look like anyone was there and it’s Sam Chui..

Just found this video while looking for stuff to post about. It took place around a month ago based on the upload date and it happened right in front of Abyat. No clue what it was about but a number of cars were attacked and one car even tried running over a bunch of guys.

The Dewaniya Show on Marina FM brought up my post on my parents having to leave Kuwait for good and discussed the topic of long term expats on the air. They’ve only shared the first two and a half minutes online which you can watch above, but I’m hoping to get a hold of the whole episode since I’m curious to what peoples opinions on the subject was. Once I do I’ll post it up here.

“The Unmissing Part” is a short 2 minute film by Kuwaiti film maker Ahmad Alkhudari. The film won a total of 11 awards at various film festivals around the world last year which is pretty impressive so check it out.

Just digitized this video taken at the Kuwait Ice Skating Rink back in April of 1995. 1991-92 is when I frequented the ice skating rink mostly and back then the music was amazing with hits like Snap – I got the Power and Soul II Soul – Back to Life. Still, the video above should bring back memories and if you look closely you can even spot the arcades in the background.

This is a short film showcasing one of the best wetland reserves in Kuwait, the Al-Jahra Natural Reserve. With scenes similar to the one pictured below you wouldn’t guess this was Kuwait. So beautiful.

The second time in a couple of months that an attack on police was captured on video. This time though one of the cops manages to pull out his weapon which ends up scaring off the attackers. This is one of the cases where the video ends too soon since it stops just as the cop starts running after the attackers with his weapon pulled. If anyone knows what happened after let us know in the comments.

Brownbook magazine shot a short interview with architect Zahra Ali Baba who reflects on her research, the practice of architectural conservation and the importance of history in the development of Kuwait. Its less than 4 minutes, is interesting to watch and nicely shot, so check it out above.

A YouTube user going by the name jalili99Q8 has been uploading tons of old videos on Kuwait. The videos range from music videos, interviews, shows, documentaries and more. Personally I like the documentaries similar to the ones I’ve embedded in this post. Most of the videos I’ve come across have been in Arabic, but there are a few English ones and even if they’re in Arabic, you can still flip through them since the music is usually very 70s or Miami Vice 80s which is amazing.
