Campaign for Change to Benefit Kuwait

The U.S. Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) of the State Department is sponsoring the Kuwait Leadership Mastery to teach men (17-24) and women (of all ages) leadership skills.

There are seats for only 50 participants and these 50 participants will work in teams to develop a campaign for change to benefit Kuwait. Each team will have the benefit of a mentor who will guide them over a 5-6 month time period as they develop their campaign. At the end of the program in March, the media will be invited to a presentation that highlights the Campaigns for Change. In April the 50 participants will graduate and each receive a special certificate that certifies their leadership skills.

The regular fee for this training is usually around KD700 to KD900 but since it’s being sponsored you don’t have to pay. If you’re interested in applying for this program visit their website at kuwaitleadershipmastery.com. Registration will end 15 October.

Nano Sim Cards in Kuwait

The new iPhone 5 uses new “nano” sim cards that are smaller and slimmer than micro sim cards. Luckily it seems all local telecom providers will be getting nano sim cards and we won’t have to do any cutting or card slimming to get it working with our iPhone 5’s. Wataniya already posted on twitter that they will have nano sim cards and Viva just confirmed to me that they will also have nano sim cards available. I’ve contacted Zain as well but I’m still waiting for a reply from them.

Google Maps with Navigation Arrives to Kuwait and MENA

I was under the impression that this was already available but I guess it wasn’t. It still doesn’t work with iPhones but if you have Android 4.0 and above then you’re in luck. [Link]

Yousef is a 17 year old Kuwaiti kid with a thing for backflips. He went around Kuwait and shot clips of himself backflipping in front of different landmarks and inside different places with the idea to show Kuwait in a different way.

He makes backflipping look so easy. [YouTube]

The Kuwait Towers Renovation

The Kuwait Towers have been closed for a few months due to the fact they’re being renovated. If you’re curious to see how they will turn out after the work is completed check out the video above. [YouTube]

Update: I just found out the video above is a design proposed around six years back but was never approved. There currently isn’t an approved design since they’re still getting proposals from various companies and this process requires another 6 to 9 months. There are plans to have a 3D theater and some other features you can see in the video above but again there is no design finalized as of now.

Currently the Kuwait Towers are closed and the interiors of all three towers have been ripped out since they’re upgrading the fire system, plumbing, electricity cables etc.. in preparation so that once a design is approved they can start work immediately. It’s expected to take 3 years for the project to be completed and the towers to reopen.

Go Karting in Kuwait in 1964 and more

I was trying to find information on the Anglo American School of Kuwait and by chance ended up finding a whole bunch of old photos of Kuwait dating back from 1960 up till 1984. I hadn’t seen any of them before and the one that grabbed my attention the most was the one above of a karting track in Ahmadi back in 1964. Most likely the first go-kart track in the region. There are a ton of photos, some are more interesting than others but all help paint a picture of life in Ahmadi back in the 60s and 70s. Check them out [Here]

I hope I’m not too late posting about this but I just found out from Kuwaitiful’s blog that not only is Kuwait competing at the Paralympics but that since 1980 they’ve won 49 medals including 10 gold. Why did I just hear about this!

At the current Paralympics that’s taking place in London Kuwait has a total of six athletes competing. For more details check out Kuwaitiful’s post [Here]

Kuwait represented at Ironman

Some members of The 3 Club competed in Ironman Austria recently and they were featured in a short documentary of the event. Ironman is a brutal long-distance triathlon race that consists of a 3.86km swim, 180.25km bike ride followed by a 42.2km run. It’s insane! Check them out in the video above, skip to the 4:26 minute mark. [YouTube]

Emmy Eats Kuwait

I had no idea who Emmy was until a reader emailed me telling me about her. Emmymade in Japan is a YouTube channel where Emmy usually reviews different kind of candies (mostly from Japan) while eating them in front of the camera. Well it seems she has some Kuwaiti viewers because someone from Kuwait sent her a box full of treats all the way to Japan. It’s really fun watching her trying to figure out what everything is. Thanks Teeba

Warriors War – Kuwait

Turns out Gladiator Fighting Championship is not the first MMA fight in Kuwait. Warriors War was an MMA cage fight that took place in Kuwait back in 2001 and not only was Bruce Buffer the announcer and John McCarthy one of the refs but UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes was on the fight card and he lost! Not sure how I never noticed Kuwait mentioned in his professional record on Wikipedia.

KUWAIT SHIDOKAN JITSU WARRIORS WAR I
Hughes, Pele, Newton, Menne, some of the top talent in lightweight world traveled half-way around the globe in hopes of winning $60,000 in an 8-man tournament on Kuwaiti soil. No easy victory as Menne would face Canada’s Carlos Newton in the first round and then Russian alternate Maro Magob before fighting the much heavier Kareem Barklaev from Russia in the finals. [Source]

The video on top of this post is of Antonio Tello versus Kuwait’s Khaled Mubarak [Video]

Here is a link to the full fight card of Warriors War Kuwait [Link]

Thanks lulz
