Kuwait Stock Exchange by Andreas Gursky

Yesterday I found out that the popular German large format photographer, Andreas Gursky, had captured two photos of the Kuwait Stock Exchange. The one pictured in this post was auctioned off at Sotheby’s for KD280,000!

His two Kuwait Stock Exchange photos were captured one year apart. The first photo was captured in 2007 and you can view it [Here] while the second photo which is pictured in this post was taken in 2008 and you can view the larger version [Here]

Apple Pay Works in Kuwait

Looks like Apple Pay is now starting to work in some places in Kuwait. Some of the new Knet machines that support wireless Knet payment now also work with Apple Pay. I haven’t been able to try this myself, but a friend of mine was able to paying using Apple Pay at Solo Pizza. You need to have a credit card already added to your phone from a country that has Apple Pay like the US for example.

There is no real advantage to using Apple Pay in Kuwait, if anything its actually more expensive when you factor in the cost to transfer money from Kuwait bank account to your US one. But for now, I guess there is a bit of a cool factor to using Apple Pay.

Update: Just tried my Apple Pay at Liquid and it worked!

What its Like Inside a Prison in Kuwait

A reader recently spent over a month in prison for driving his mum’s car without having a driving license (he nearly got deported too). He wrote about his experience on his blog, and you can check out his post [Here]

The part I found interesting is how prisoners get free cigarette packs. I wonder if that decision was made to prevent or cut down on drug use and violence. It’s interesting because I’ve never heard of a prison doing that before. The cost on the government to supply cigarettes to all the inmates for free must be ginormous.

Update: The writer has now edited his post based on the advice of his lawyer and removed certain parts including the part about free cigarettes.

Rapper Russ Backs Out from Kuwait Concert

I honestly have no clue who Russ is, but a friend told me he’s pretty popular so figured this was newsworthy. Based on some tweets he posted a while ago, Russ was supposed to come and perform in Kuwait but then found out the promoter was planning on selling the tickets for a ridiculous price, so he backed out.

The prices for the tickets were going to be as follows:

VIP – KD250
Gold – KD200
Silver – KD150
Bronze – KD100
Normal – KD50

The prices seem similar to Sting but looking at the seating chart of this event, it didn’t look like it was going to be held at a proper theater. In fact, I think it was going to be held in a large tent or hall with no elevated seating which means anything behind silver would have been terrible seating. According to Russ, he’s still willing to come to Kuwait, but only if the promoter decides to reduce the ticket prices. We’ll see how this plays out.

Pet Friendly Places in Kuwait

A friend of mine recently moved back to Kuwait and brought his dog with him. He asked me the other day if I knew of any pet-friendly places and I had no idea. My dog is currently living with my ex-wife in Canada now and so I’ve been completely out of the loop with where to take a dog out. I used to take him to Al Shaheed Park back when it was just a regular large park (not what it is today), but with the new Al Shaheed Park pets aren’t allowed. The Scientific Center walkway is generally pet-friendly just because its a common sight seeing people walking their dogs there but other than that, I have no idea where someone can take their pets.

My friend heard Richards Coffee and Wild Cafe were both pet-friendly, but if you know of anywhere else let me know.

Sponsored: Kuwait Reggio Center

There seems to be a nursery on every corner in Kuwait, and yet none of them had everything I wanted for my child. As a teacher, I’d researched some of the top nursery programs in the world and fallen in love with the Reggio-Emilia approach. The primary schools in this small, Italian town cater to the unique needs of the community and students. Children construct their own understanding of the world around them through literal construction with blocks, clay, sand and water. They represent their ideas with painting, photography, film, dance, music and theatre. And most importantly, they play! They play outdoors in the grass and dirt; they climb and swing; they play pretend and they play out real life scenarios. This rich and stimulating environment is what I wanted for my child, and when I couldn’t find it, I created it.

The Kuwait Reggio Center brings all of the above from Reggio-Emilia, Italy to Mansouriya, Kuwait. KRC is an inquiry-based, child-centered nursery where curiosity is the curriculum. Children explore the classroom to find what interests them. Maybe they will learn to compare sizes and shapes in the block area, or choose to learn colors and fine motor skills in the art space. They can build literacy skills cuddled up with a book in the reading loft, or expand their vocabulary through dramatic play. Outside the classroom, the central piazza allows them to perfect their gross motor skills in the soft play obstacle course or move to a rhythm created in the music corner. They also have the chance to play with light, sound and touch in the sensory room, or calm their senses and focus on their breath in yoga class.

It’s not all pretend-play, the children have real work to do! They cook up snacks in our custom built kitchen using food from the school garden. They create works of art using diverse media from modeling clay to woodwork. They reduce, reuse and recycle in our recycling center. Their artwork, dialogue and photos decorate the walls so that the children know their work is meaningful.

Learning takes place outside the walls of KRC too. There is a playground where they can swing and slide, a sand and water section where they are allowed to get messy, a large track where they can pedal, scoot, and drive, and an open field where they can run through the grass or rest under the shady tree.

They can do all of this safely because the children are supported by well-educated, caring, vigilant, and certified teachers who extend and foster the students’ creativity. Parents are also invited to participate in their children’s education because parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.

I am a parent first, and Kuwait Reggio Center is the nursery I built for my children. If you think it might be the right school for your child, find out more at our website www.kuwaitreggiocenter.com or request a tour by contacting [email protected] or 98747518.

Flyover of the Kuwait Motor Town Circuit

I need to do this with my drone, except I’d have my drone follow the track on the same path the cars would take. It’s so close to being finished, just three more months!
