Falantan a blogger that works at a local internet provider just posted that today they received an order from one of the department heads at the Ministry of Communication asking them to block Youtube.com. I hope this isn’t true since if they block YouTube they might as well just go all the way and block the Internet completely.
The video says this fire happened three days ago (16/9/08) but I haven’t heard anything about it. Here is another video showing the plane more clearly.
I passed by the Kuwait Regency Palace today and managed to take some pictures of the construction thats taking place there. Many of you might remember Kuwait Regency from before the Gulf War, it was one of the best hotels in Kuwait and most school graduation ceremonies used to be held there, I’ve had two graduations there personally. They were also known for their incredible indoor tennis courts and during the Iraqi invasion the hostages from the British Airways flight 149 were even held captive at the Kuwait Regency. Well the place is getting a huge makeover and as you can see from the picture above the tennis courts are currently being used as offices. The hotel should be soft launching by the end of the year with the proper launch by early next year. I took some more pictures which you can see by clicking on continue below.
I think its really great that the place is getting a renovation instead of being completely demolished and rebuilt. I also love the way the name has progressed in time, when it first launched it used to be part of the Hyatt group of hotels and it was called Hyatt Regency, it then became Kuwait Regency and now with the relaunch it will become just The Regency. Sadly the indoor tennis courts will no longer exist once the renovation is completed.
Back in March I posted about how the blog was mentioned in the Brownbook Urban Guide Kuwait edition and since then I’ve been trying to get my hands on a copy of the book. I couldn’t find it in Kuwait and when I was in Lebanon a month ago I only found a box set that included a whole bunch of guides from around the region but I didn’t want to pony up $60 just so that I could check myself out. Finally a few days ago a friend of mine got me a copy of the Kuwait edition which she found by chance in another bookstore in Lebanon. The guide is pretty cool featuring most of the trendy places in Kuwait and a few other interesting places to visit. I need to buy a few of these guides and give them away to some friends (not cuz I am in it but because it makes Kuwait look cool) but I couldn’t find one copy yet a few!
I just got an SMS from the KTM dealer TriStar that the new RC8 is now on display in their showroom. I am not sure what color they have displayed but white is my favorite on it.
The other day I posted a picture of what some guys in the States did with a Krispy Kreme donut. They took an original glazed donut and stuffed it with a cheese burger and although it looked a bit gross I imagine it probably tasted pretty good. Well some blog readers decided to try it out for themselves and went to Marina Mall and created their very own Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger. They’ve posted some pictures of the burger in the forum and even a video of it being eaten. This is something I’ve got to try.
An anonymous reader emailed me a link to this article. It seems its confirmed, Kuwait is going with Dodge Chargers which is something everyone thought would happen since the alternatives weren’t as practical. [Link]
A friend of mine just got his Lexus IS F. He had to import it from the States since the local dealer isn’t getting them. The car would sell like hotcakes if they did so its strange why they aren’t getting it.
How come we don’t have a proper DVD and videogame rental store? I doubt it’s because of censorship because there are a ton of movies that don’t need or have anything to be censored. The last barely decent rental place I remember was The Video Club and that wasn’t anything close to a Blockbuster in the States or Canada. We’ve never had a proper rental place in Kuwait. It’s really strange.
Found this article on the news website Naharnet suggesting that Kuwait is preparing for a possible war in the Gulf. Supposedly foreign troops are coming into the region for a possible war against Iran. Doesn’t sound very credible though. [Link]
At work I’ve got a Fasttelco connection and today I noticed that Skype was blocked. I don’t know how long its been blocked for but I found it strange that it was. Then someone posted a comment on the blog saying that United Networks have also blocked Skype. I’ve got a Qualitynet connection at home and at the moment Skype is still not blocked here but now I’m wondering if Qualitynet will start blocking skype to.
Update: Its also blocked on KEMS/Zajil
Update2: As of today morning the site is no longer blocked by Fasttelco
There is a British TV show called “Banged Up Abroad” where the stories revolve around British citizens who were arrested abroad usually on drug related charges. The trailer above is for an episode where a British guy in the late 80’s gets caught dealing drugs in Kuwait and gets sentenced to 5 years in prison. Saddam then invaded Kuwait in 1990 and he was able to escape back to England.
What I don’t get is this TV show. Why would you turn criminals like drug dealers into semi celebrities? [YouTube]
Note: Qualitynet users, if you get an error that the video is no longer available its because of Qualitynet. The video is still online but somethings weird with the Qualitynet connection and 80% of YouTube videos are showing as no longer available. I’ve been having this issue for over a week now.
I had breakfast at Johnny Rockets today and when I came to pay they told me Knet wasn’t working. Now after having lunch at Wasabi I came to pay and they again told me Knet wasn’t working. I am concluding from this that today is not Knet’s best day.
note: I am talking about Knet point of sales not the atm machines.
