First Impression: Dean & Deluca

I had been hearing a lot of negative stuff about Dean & Deluca like how everything they have is available at Sultan Center, or how their prices are too expensive and how they really don’t have many products so when I passed by this weekend I wasn’t expecting much.

The place ROCKS. I don’t know what people are complaining about. First of all I don’t think I saw anything there that was available at Sultan Center. Price wise, yes they have caviar that costs over KD2,000 and Black Truffles that cost over KD600 but those items aren’t meant for us, they’re for the people who can afford them. I checked out their meat section and found their prices actually cheap, at least I think KD3.600/kg for Wagyu beef is cheap. They have around 6 or 7 types of mushrooms and a whole range of fruits and vegetables that I haven’t seen before. They even have a great seafood section. I also found out they made gourmet sandwiches, kinda like the ones at Napket and also have ready made soup (Lobster Bisque for KD2).

I am really glad a place like Dean & Deluca opened up in Kuwait and I hope it does well so that it remains open. Places like this bring back the joy in cooking. If you haven’t passed by please do, they’re located in the Avenues, phase II.

(I couldn’t take any pictures because the two times I passed by it was PACKED so if you have any pictures email them to me)

Hotel Security Sucks

I always knew hotel security was just a gimmick of a sort to let guests feel more secure but I didn’t think they sucked this much. The picture above is of a large container I had in my trunk last night when I drove through a hotel check point at a major hotel here in Kuwait. The hotel had the large metal door that comes out of the ground and security guards with the mirror on a pole checking underneath the car while another one checks the trunk. When I was asked to open my trunk I was like shit now they are going to tell me to remove the case from the back of my car to open it and I really wasn’t in the mood. Surprisingly even though they checked the trunk and saw the container they didn’t even ask me what was in it (it was camera equipment if you want to know). Me and my friend were dumbfounded! Why do they even bother to look in the trunk? How do they expect a bomb to look like, a few red dynamite sticks with a golden colored clock like in the cartoons?

Al Mayass Restaurant Caught on Fire

I just found out today that there was a fire at Al Mayass. I don’t know how I missed this but I guess it happened while I was in London. Hope it wasn’t too bad.

London is Cheap

Everything is on sale but even without the sale London is cheap. Last year when I was here 1KD made I think like 1.6 pounds but now it’s like 2.6 although I’ve noticed when I use my credit card the exchange rate is like 2.3 pounds. Our hotel room is tiny as expected but will post pics and more once I get back to Kuwait since I am posting from my iPhone now. There was barely enough room for our luggage but with all our shopping bags things have gotten more… interesting. I think two more bags and we won’t be able to get into our room but I am loving it.

easyHotel review by another blogger

AMU, a blogger from Kuwait found out about easyHotel from my blog post awhile back and decided to give it a shot. He just got to London and this is what he had to say:

..the hotel is beyond my expectation for its price. It extremely clean and 2 minutes walk from the station. I have a double bed single room with a window. Nice and friendly staff and they have all the information available if you would like to do some site seeing.

I wonder if there is anyone else also from Kuwait going to be staying there with us. I get to London on Tuesday and will also be staying at the same easyHotel in Paddingtone so I will be posting my own review too. For now you can check out his review [Here]

Test Drive III

Just a blast from the past. I used to play this game back in 1991 in my computer class when I was still in Kuwait English School. In the video above the game actually starts at the 2 minute mark. [YouTube]

Esprit After the Fire

It seems a fire fighter shot a video of the Esprit store in the Avenues after the fire and the video is now floating around the Internet. Someone already uploaded the short clip to YouTube and you can watch the video above. I still haven’t heard anything about what started the fire though. [YouTube]

Thanks Moey!

New Year, New Sponsors

I just wanted to give a shout-out to my sponsors and introduce them to everyone. You’ve got Saso Lounge who I’ve posted about before [Here]. Zain which everyone knows about already. D*Lush which make the best Cookies N Cream milkshake in Kuwait and I’ve previously reviewed them [Here]. Pink Moon I’ve actually never posted about before because its a girly store. They’ve got an online store [Here] and a physical store on the Gulf Road opposite Seef Palace next to Slider Station and The Burger Hub. The Exhibition is also located next to Pink Moon and they’ve just started advertising with us this month, they’re a trendy place where people can exhibit whatever they want. Revive is a new juice bar concept with a location at Souk Sharq and Mishref Coop. Finally Lola et moi is a new kids store that’s launching in the Discovery Mall next month but are currently temporarily located at IRIS.

Eat My Dust

I found this video on YouTube, its a short amateur movie that was shot in Kuwait back in 1992 by a guy called Ali. If you consider the fact that this movie was shot and edited by a teenager in the early 90s without a computer, its actually pretty cool.. in a geeky way. [YouTube]

For some reason I now feel like watching The Dirt Bike Kid

Freej Soeleh

I was checking out Safat when I found a post by Intlxpatr talking about a Kuwaiti restaurant located next to Marina Mall. She had posted a bunch of pictures and the place looked really interesting and since it was on the same street as my house I decided to pass by and try it.

I have no clue how I never noticed this place before but even if I had I don’t think I would have thought much of it since from the outside it looks pretty average. Once you walk inside though you’re suddenly transformed into an old Kuwaiti city. The private cabins are actually little old Kuwaiti houses and to get to a cabin you have to walk through small narrow corridors, kinda like the old tight streets between the houses.

The menu is full of Kuwaiti dishes as you can expect, I ended up ordering hummus for starters followed by mourabian (yellow rice with shrimps on top) for my main course. The hummus was fine, the bread was weird, kinda like crepes but it was good. My main course also wasn’t bad at all and for KD2.500 was pretty cheap for the quantity. I prefer Oum Habbibs mourabian but that’s also nearly twice as expensive and located all the way in Kuwait City while this place is just minutes from my house.

Nothing I had tonight was wow but the place is an experience and I still have a ton of stuff to try on their menu. Prices are VERY cheap and you can actually check out most of the menu in Intlxpatr’s post. I passed by around 9:30 and the place was pretty packed. Overall it was a good experience and will definitely pass by again. They are located on the same street as Marina Mall, opposite Kwik Kopy, first floor, entrance is from the back next to the red truck (motor hamar).

To check out a lot more pictures of Freej Soeleh check out Intlxpatr’s post by clicking [Here]

Whopper Sacrifice

Right on the heels of Whopper Virgin comes Whopper Sacrifice, another super smart campaign by Burger King. Whopper Sacrifice is a Facebook application and unlike anything else on Facebook it isn’t trying to make you join a group, make more friends or spread the word, instead it asks you to delete 10 friends from your list and in return you get a free Whopper. Usually when you de-friend someone on Facebook its quiet and your friends might not even notice, not the case with Whopper Sacrifice. It will make sure your 10 friends know you ditched them for a whopper. Now it doesn’t work in Kuwait as in you won’t get a free Whopper here but its still fun to do. [Link]

Zippo Hand Warmer

This product by Zippo is perfect for the current cold weather since its made to keep your hands warm. I think two of these would be perfect since you could shove each one in a pocket and then put your hands in and wrap them around the warmers. I don’t know if they sell them in Kuwait but on Amazon it goes for around KD5 without the lighter fluid which makes it Shop&Ship friendly.

Here is a link to the Zippo Hand Warmer product page [Link]
Here it is on Amazon [Link]
