Some 80s-90s Nostalgia

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ارشيف الزمن الجميل (@zmn_gmil) on

I came across the Instagram account @zmn_gmil that had some videos of Kuwait from the 80s and 90s which I hadn’t seen before. I went through the account and picked out a few videos I thought were worth sharing. One is embedded above, the rest are below.

The scene with the girl and her arm down the meat grinder (below) is probably why I never stuffed my hand inside one. All those old government-sponsored awareness videos I watched as a kid on KTV really stuck with me, even until today. It’s sad people don’t have that nowadays. I’ve seen so many parents, for example, let their kids hang out of the car’s sunroof, I’m sure if they knew how dangerous that could be they wouldn’t do it anymore. Anyway, check out the rest of the videos below.

Chili’s Kuwait Towers Not Closing Down… For Now

On Friday I had lunch at Chili’s next to the Kuwait Towers since it was meant to be their last day before closing down for good. Chili’s lost the bid for their Kuwait Towers location and so they were having a goodbye week of a sort. When Chili’s opened up on the Gulf Road 20 years ago, there really weren’t that many restaurant options which is why it was an extremely popular place with a long waiting list on weekends.

On Friday Chili’s posted on their instagram account that they would extend their operations for one more day to give more people time to come by for one last time. Something must have happened though since a few moments ago, Chili’s posted on their instagram account that due to a decision by the Ministry, they’re going to remain open until further notice.

Not sure what Ministry decision they’re talking about but if you didn’t have a chance to pass by and say goodbye, you’ve got a bit more time now.

San Sebastian Cheesecakes

When I posted about Japanese Cheesecakes last month, a friend made me aware of another kind of popular cheesecake called the San Sebastian. From what I gathered online, the San Sebastian cheesecake is actually a burnt basque cheesecake that was made popular by a bakery restaurant in San Sebastian called La Viña (I could be wrong so don’t quote me).

I ended up trying the cake from two places, and although they were both really good, I don’t think I’ll be having it again since it’s just too sweet for my taste.

Bread Talk
I heard their Japanese cheesecake was good but I ended up picking up a San Sebastian cake instead. They’ve got a lot of branches around so it’s super convinient to pick one up before heading to a dinner for example. Their cheesecake had an extremely creamy center and was super sweet but delicious.

Price: KD11.250

Burn
Burn is an online bakery that makes only one thing, San Sebastian cheesecakes. They’re not available on Carriage or anywhere else though so the only way to get a cake would be to WhatsApp them. This is not the most practical option. Their cheesecake also had a creamy center albeit not as creamy as the Bread Talk one.

Price: KD13

If you have a favorite San Sebastian cheesecake place let us know in the comments!

PASS App – Ticketless and Cashless Parking

PASS App is a new app and service that recently launched and it has me excited because it’s a service I would so definitely use. I don’t like carrying around cash but I tend to do so mostly because I need cash to pay for parking. PASS App solves that issue by allowing me to pay for parking without the need to have cash.

The way it works is simple. You download the PASS App and set up an account. I added my two cars to the account and also added some money. Next time I visit 360 Mall (the only location where PASS App works right now), a camera that is installed at the gate will read my car plates and recognize me as a PASS App user. When I’m done shopping, I head to the exit and another camera will read my license plate and open the gate for me. The parking fee gets automatically deducted from the funds I have in my PASS App.

Such a simple idea but one that is so useful. Right now PASS App only works at 360 Mall, but once it gets installed in more places this is going to be such a practical service. If you want to try PASS App you can download it from [Here]

Also, check out their instagram account since they have videos explaining how the service works @get.pass

Build the New 2019 Porsche 911

Last week Porsche launched the all-new Porsche 911 and the Porsche Kuwait website already has been updated with the ability to build and price one out.

The new 911 Carrera S starts from KWD 37,300 while the Carrera 4S starts from KWD 39,600.

I really wish more car dealers in Kuwait allowed us to build and price cars on their local websites like Porsche does. I know I love building and pricing cars just for fun and I know other car guys love doing it as well. If you want to build and price the new Porsche 911 then click [Here]

Pizzas are the New Burgers

Looks like the next big thing foodwise in Kuwait could be pizzas! This past year a number of local pizza concepts have popped up and I think more and more places will be popping up soon as well. I’m trying to compile a list of these local concepts (not franchises) similar to how I did with my coffee list and below is what I’ve come up with so far:

BARBA.
Brooklyn
Doppio
Feynman’s
Flame
Ovenly
Piccola Milano
Pinocchio’s Pizza
SOLO Pizza
Super Slice
Table Otto
The Tiny Table
Trapani
YELO!

I’m sure I’ve missed out on a bunch so if you know of any that should be on this list, let me know in the comments below!

Pre-Order the PlayStation Classic in Kuwait

Sony is launching the PlayStation Classic in Kuwait on December 3rd. If you haven’t heard about this, Sony is releasing a mini version of the original PlayStation with 20 built-in games that include:

Battle Arena Toshinden
Cool Boarders 2
Destruction Derby
Final Fantasy VII
Grand Theft Auto
Intelligent Qube
Jumping Flash!
Metal Gear Solid
Mr. Driller
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
R4: Ridge Racer Type 4
Rayman
Resident Evil: Director’s Cut
Revelations: Persona
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
Syphon Filter
Tekken 3
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
Twisted Metal
Wild Arms

The console will plug into your TV using HDMI and will run over USB power. I’m a bit disappointed Castlevania: Symphony of the Night isn’t included in the Classic since it was my favorite game on the PlayStation, so I haven’t’ decided yet if I am going to pick one up. But, if you’re interested in a bit of nostalgia, the official price for the PlayStation Classic is going to be KD35 in Kuwait and you can secure a copy by pre-ordering one from the GamesQ8 website [Here]

Update: It’s now available on the Xcite website [Here]

Sponsored: SRVME – A solution for all your maintenance needs

SRVME is not your ordinary maintenance app. SRVME is planning to change how the service industry works.

SRVME, an on-demand service app is here to get rid of all of the inconveniences of maintenance work and make your life so much easier. Instead of asking your friends for an electrician that they know, waiting for their reply, then waiting to see if they even have the guy’s number saved, SRVME connects you – in less than 5 minutes! – to the most trusted service providers.

With SRVME, we can ensure that you will receive reliable, trustworthy and high-quality service as all of the SRVME service providers have undergone a thorough assessment process.

Apps promise a lot these days. We know. All kinds of services can be received at the click of a button. BUT, have you heard of something similar to this – SRVME’s price per hour approach.

Price per hour approach
Usually, maintenance businesses in Kuwait operate by charging a fee “per item”. So the more the items fixed, the bigger the invoice. At SRVME we found a solution to this. We charge all of our services at a set “price per hour”. Try it yourself and see the difference.

Let us give you an example, assume you do an annual maintenance for your A/C unit which costs you around 10-15 KD per unit, five units would cost you 50-75 KD. But, with the “price per hour” approach you would only pay per hour worked! Five units would take three hours to clean, leaving you with a cost of only 27KD.

Love it already? We’ve got more.

Trackable Handyman
You are able to track the service provider through the app. So, you can check his exact location (just like Uber)

Online payment
Flexibility in the payment method, you can pay by KNET, Credit Card or Cash. You can also save your Credit Card information.

Warranty Included
Something went wrong? Claim your warranty through the app within 30 days.

Rating Provided
Do you like the work of the technician? Give him 5 stars and he’ll be the first to get the notification for your next order.

Saved History
No need to keep hold of printed receipts, all your receipts are saved on the app.

How to use the app?

So, let’s say you wanted to fix your A/C or satellite, all you need to do is:

– Share your location
– Choose your required service
– Book a date and time at your convenience
– Select your preferred online payment method (cash/Knet/credit card)
– Confirm the service and we’ll be ready to serve you!

What services do we offer you?
A/C maintenance
Satellite maintenance
Plumbing services
Electrical maintenance
NEW! Interior painting
NEW! Carpentry
We will be adding additional services every month.
