The Golden Triangle Project

A mini-documentary about a secluded area in Kuwait “Jileeb Alsheyookh” and a guy’s dream to develop a project that would benefit people living around this area.

I can’t tell if this is the actual mini-documentary or the trailer for it. [YouTube]

Marina Mall Roof

One of the cool things about Marina Mall is the fact the glass roofs all open up so it feels like you’re walking outdoor. Problem is I haven’t seen the roofs open in years and I’m not sure if they stopped working or they just don’t bother opening them anymore. I think the last time I saw the roof open was in 2005.

Digging for trash

This shot was taken in Dubai. If this was in Kuwait the camels would probably have eaten the dog poison and died.

Strange Octagon Compound

UPDATE: Never mind turned out it’s in Saudi Arabia! Don’t know how I missed that minor detail! Also turned out to be the King Khalid Military City. Pretty cool.

Does anyone know what this strange middle of nowhere octagon compound is? It’s located right in the middle of the Kuwaiti desert and it looks huge. The more you zoom in the more you realize how many buildings there and a ton of parking spaces. I’m thinking military but it seems too big to be just that.

You can check it out yourself on Google Maps [Here]
Don’t forget to zoom in!

The Dog Poison

Around 2 weeks back I posted a video along with some pictures of dogs that were poisoned in the Free Trade Zone. I just found out that aldaronline.com have an article (in Arabic) on the poisoning as well as pictures of the poison being placed and of how it looks like. As you can see below, it looks like regular dog food.

Not sure if anyone other paper picked up on this story but here is a link to the article on aldaronline.com. [Link]

The Salmiya Project

So the old Salmiya building which housed some of our childhood memories like Family Bookshop and Alamiah got demolished recently and according to the developer Saud Sahoud, the picture above is what they’re building in it’s place. I honestly don’t have an idea what it is. I’ve actually named the picture above “something.jpg” since I’m not sure if it’s a mall, an entertainment park or some futuristic arena from TRON. Since I will be living down the block from this structure if someone can enlighten me to what it is that would be helpful. You can see a larger picture [Here]

I hope it’s going to be something cool because the area does need a big boost.

Update: I managed to find a better picture, the small one is above but the larger version of it is [Here]. Turns out it’s a mall which will contain 8 cinemas, a snow city, ice skating rink, thrilling rides, family entertainment and “things that will be the first in the world” [Source]

So I’m going to have a snow park and movie theaters in a building that wouldn’t like out of place on Blade Runner all just down the street from my house. That’s cool.

I was wondering how Salmiya would cope with this sudden influx of traffic but looks like a company has already been awarded a contract to sort it out. [Source]

Completion date for this mall is set for 2014.

Thanks Ahmad

Buying online vs local

This excerpt is taken from Loaay’s Two Cents column in Bazaar Magazine:

We’re dealers for a photographic cameras brand. Because our sales volumes are much smaller compared to the US dealers our prices are not as attractive. While many customers still purchase from us, some visit us but then decide to buy online. The Internet is killing our business. What can we do when our cost is higher than online selling prices?

LA: Price is what you pay for something. Value is what you receive from your purchase. Instead of focusing on price, let’s talk value. There are some obvious benefits that you can highlight. For example, customers who purchase online won’t enjoy the local warranty in many cases. The convenience of walking away immediately with the camera is an advantage over waiting a week or two to use it. However, on a deeper level, offering a free or discounted local photography club membership with certain benefits and tips for local purchasers of the brand might be exciting enough to attract some. Maybe offering an automated monthly installment for three to ten months with no interest on the higher-end models can be a winning factor for others since they have to pay 100% upfront online before their camera is shipped.

You can also negotiate with dealers in neighboring countries to make collective orders to lower the cost of all your products or at least some of your most commonly ordered items. As customers have a choice so do you. Instead of competing on price, which is a losing battle, compete on other grounds to win the war…and that’s just my two cents. [Source]

Although the example used here is with one local camera dealer this applies to other dealers as well. If you want us to buy locally instead of ordering from Amazon then give us a reason to. I’ve found a lot of things in Kuwait cheaper than the US so I don’t actually understand why some brands cost so much more. One example of something I found in Kuwait a lot cheaper than the US is Definitive Technology speakers. I got them for half the price of what people in the US pay. And just the other day I purchased a camera bag from a small local shop who was selling them for cheaper than what I would have paid for if I ordered it from Amazon. It’s doable.
