Salmiya Boulevard Progress

The progress on the Salmiya Boulevard seems to be going very slowly but based on what I saw from my friends apartment, it looks like the main structures are nearly done. Originally the park (located opposite City Center Salmiya) was supposed to house a museum, restaurants, shops, a fitness center and even a veterinary clinic. But I heard that a lot of the original plans changed so not sure whats still left from the original plan and what got canceled.

Their “About Us” page still hasn’t changed since I last poked fun of it. They still think the Boulevard is one of “the most wonderful green places to visit in the State of Kuwait” and also “the largest touristic hub in the country”.

Check out a very large panoramic shot of the park I took [Here]

Apartment Building Collapses near Salmiya

A friend just messaged me telling me an apartment building collapsed in Salmiya near the corner of the Fahaheel Expressway and the 4th Ring Road. Lots of cops and firefighters on the scene.

I don’t have any pictures or information right now other than the above. Hopefully it was an abandoned building and no one was hurt.

Update: One of my readers with more information shared the following

Apparently an old building was being demolished and collapsed sideways on the side building. No one is hurt but authorities are searching as it fell on a temporary room. -NAK

I passed by around 8:30PM, 3 hours after the incident took place and I couldn’t see any fire trucks or police cars on the scene. I did spot the building though which is located right behind Texas Chicken on the 4th Ring Road in Salmiya.

Update2: I added the photo above which was taken by Namastey Kuwait. More photos on their Facebook page [Here]

Lorenzo Salmiya now open

Last night I was dropping some stuff to the dry cleaners in Al Khalid Complex in Salmiya when I noticed Lorenzo had opened there (near Fresh). The place was empty so I went in and asked them if I could take some photos and they were ok with that. They opened last month and the place looks pretty good for the size and location. The restaurant isn’t very big but there is semi private seating in the back which I Liked. (Pictured above)

If you don’t know where Al Khalid Complex is here is a link to it on Google Maps. It’s where My Toy used to be located back in the 80s. [Link]

Beggar makes KD 1,356 in two days in Salmiya

A man was arrested in front of a bank in Salmiya recently where he faked disability to help him in begging. The man was apprehended by police who monitored his activity for days during which they discovered his apparent disability was fake. Investigations revealed that the man came to Kuwait from his home country Egypt on a visitor’s visa to practice begging. It was also revealed that he managed to collect KD 1,356 within only two days of begging. He remains in custody pending legal procedures. [Source]

1,356 in two days is actually pretty awesome.

The Salmiya Project

So the old Salmiya building which housed some of our childhood memories like Family Bookshop and Alamiah got demolished recently and according to the developer Saud Sahoud, the picture above is what they’re building in it’s place. I honestly don’t have an idea what it is. I’ve actually named the picture above “something.jpg” since I’m not sure if it’s a mall, an entertainment park or some futuristic arena from TRON. Since I will be living down the block from this structure if someone can enlighten me to what it is that would be helpful. You can see a larger picture [Here]

I hope it’s going to be something cool because the area does need a big boost.

Update: I managed to find a better picture, the small one is above but the larger version of it is [Here]. Turns out it’s a mall which will contain 8 cinemas, a snow city, ice skating rink, thrilling rides, family entertainment and “things that will be the first in the world” [Source]

So I’m going to have a snow park and movie theaters in a building that wouldn’t like out of place on Blade Runner all just down the street from my house. That’s cool.

I was wondering how Salmiya would cope with this sudden influx of traffic but looks like a company has already been awarded a contract to sort it out. [Source]

Completion date for this mall is set for 2014.

Thanks Ahmad

Big chunk of Salmiya getting demolished

The long building in old Salmiya that housed that likes of Family Bookshop, Waleed Toys, Alamiah and Hardees is getting demolished soon. All the tenants have vacated the building and it’s now been barricaded in preparation to be brought down. It’s sad since I really believe if the building got renovated it would have looked great.

Salmiya Carnival Tomorrow

Did you know that Hala February launched for the first time back in February 1999? I don’t think it has really improved much from back then and I find the event lacking consistency organization wise as well as any respect from the major retailers since a lot of them start their sale before the event. But I do find their Salmiya Carnival interesting since it allows everyone to see how much nicer Salem Al Mubarek Street can be without any cars. So if you’re looking for something to do tomorrow pass by the carnival, it should be there all day long. [Link]

Young men flee ‘tiger attack’ in Salmiya

Investigations are currently ongoing in a case in which a group of friends claim that an enemy they were preparing to fight against almost released a large tiger at them. The alleged incident reportedly took place on Al-Blajat street in Salmiya where the 12 young men approached someone they had unfinished business with, and decided to settle their differences the old fashioned way.

Soon enough, the enemy was joined by a friend, who reportedly had an adult tiger sitting in the backseat of his car. The group opted to flee when the tiger’s owner threatened to release the wild beast at them. They reported the incident at Rumaithiya police station immediately afterwards. Investigators are working to confirm the allegations before further action is taken.

Salmiya Park

If the Salmiya Park ends up looking anything like the picture above then I’ll be spending most of my time in there hanging out with my dog. I am guessing it’s going to be an animal friendly park since other than the mall, museum, restaurants etc.. there is also going to be a veterinary clinic. For more info on the Salmiya Park follow this [Link]

A greener part of Salmiya

Hard to believe but I shot the picture above in Salmiya. I love the wooden bridge over the water and I love how very green the whole area is.

I repeat, put me in charge of Salmiya

Back in January I posted about how they dug up the middle sidewalk in the old Salmiya. They decreased the walking space and created new dirt space around the already planted trees to add more greenery. I was against the idea since first of all they shrunk the sidewalk and second of all I knew it wasn’t going to work. The new Salmiya near Sultan Center and Al Fanar has never had a green middle sidewalk and somehow my old Salmiya was going to? A lot of you were against me and said I was being pessimistic, well the picture above is how it looks like 6 months later… very green indeed. It’s always going to be just sand exactly like how it’s always been sand in the newer Salmiya so I hope everyone now understands why I preferred to have a full proper sidewalk instead of “greenery”.

Check out the picture above. Do you know what that is? I think it was back in the late 80s or very early 90s someone decided to build a public bathroom right in the middle of Salmiya. I think it was functional for a month and then got destroyed by vandals and became so dirty that no one was using it and it just got abandoned. That was like 20 years ago, today it’s nothing. It’s not a bathroom, there are no doors, no toilets, no sinks or anything. Just a place to store red cones or whatever garbage is lying around. Recently as you can see in the picture they dug up the area around it to replace the floor tiles with newer ones but they left this abandoned ugly block of cement right in the middle. Couldn’t they have just demolished it?

Another strange thing happened recently, someone realized how much garbage was filling up the streets of Salmiya and so came up with a brilliant solution. They decided to put bright yellow garbage bins all over Salmiya and at around 10 meters apart. Check the video above I shot today. I drove maybe 200 meters and I counted around 66 bright yellow garbage bins! And that only includes the middle sidewalk and some of the sidewalk on the left but completely ignoring the right sidewalk since it was in the video. It’s the most horrifying scene since all you can see on the street now are the garbage bins. Do we really need that many bins in the middle sidewalk? [YouTube]

I’ll say it again, I love Salmiya and I want to be put in charge of it or at the very least Salem Mubarek Street. I’ll seriously make it the most beautiful place in Kuwait. I’ve been requesting this since back in 2006, so what do I need to do to make this happen? I’ve watched enough episodes of Parks and Recreation to know what it takes. Salmiya is my Pawnee.

A greener Salmiya? Please no!

The past two weeks they’ve been digging up the street in front of my house in Salmiya (the old shopping street in Salem al Mubarek street). At first I thought they were actually reducing the size of the middle sidewalk to add more parking spots which pissed me off since I walk my dog there every morning. Then yesterday I spoke to one of the workers and he told me that wasn’t the plan, it turns out they’re going to be planting the middle sidewalk like how it is on the Gulf Road.

Usually this would be a good thing. Who wouldn’t want to live on a green street? I usually would be all pro for going green but not in this case. The street is currently just one big garbage bin. It’s completely ignored, no one is taking care of it. The streets are crumbling, most of the buildings are getting ready to be demolished, there is trash everywhere, not enough garbage bins and there is a street fight practically on a daily basis because of this billiard place next to my house. A month or two ago while walking my dog at 8AM I heard a lot of shouting and screaming. When I got closer I noticed two gangs throwing rocks at each other. One group of guys looked like Emo’s, they were standing across the street yelling and throwing rocks at another group of tubby guys standing on the other side of the street screaming back. There was a shop with a broken window because it got hit by a flying brick. This was at 8 in the morning!

I’ve lived in the exact same spot now for over 30 years and I’ve seen it turn from a trendy high end street to the dump it is now. If you check the archives you’ll find a number of posts (Here is one) where I’ve asked to be put in charge of the area so I could bring it back to life (Here is another). Currently I spend my mornings picking up broken bottles and pieces of glass so that my dog doesn’t end up getting cut. No one ever cleans up the garbage and everyone seems more than happen to just throw everything onto the floor. I’m lucky that the care taker of the building next to mine cleans up the alleyway between our two buildings or else it would just be a garbage dump.

So the idea that they’re planting grass in the middle of the sidewalk in what currently is a half deserted shopping street full of garbage just doesn’t make any sense. Whats going to happen is you’ll have all this greenery with white tissue papers and chips bags dangling off them like decorations. Instead of going green, can we go clean instead? Can someone please put me in charge of Salem Mubarek Street?

Crane on fire in Salmiya

A reader shot and uploaded the video above taken today at around 4PM. Don’t know what would start a fire in that little cockpit but hopefully the crane operator managed to get away unhurt. [YouTube]
