Review: Ring Stick Up Cam Battery

Back in April, I decided to buy a security camera so I could monitor my front door. Whenever I was ordering food I was having the drivers leave it at the front door, and I was also doing the same with my courier deliveries. Instead of having my packages delivered to my office which was closed, I was having them drop it off home instead. Since I didn’t want to sit around the house all day waiting for the drivers, I’d sometimes be out of the house when they deliver so I just have them leave the package at the front door. That was really the main reason I decided I’d get a security camera, just in case a package went missing I could see what happened.

At first, I wanted to get the Ring Doorbell cam but while checking out Xcite’s inventory, I found out about the Ring Stick Up Cam Battery and I realized it would work better for me. The quality of the video was higher than the Ring Doorbell, the battery also lasted longer and it was also cheaper.

Because I was mounting the camera outside my apartment door I didn’t want to run any electrical wires. I needed something I could mount easily and run on battery for a very long time. The Stick Up cam came in two versions, a wired and a battery version with the battery version promising up to 5 months battery life on a single charge. Xcite was selling the camera for 35KD which is pretty close to the Amazon price which was 31KD not including tax or delivery, so I ordered it from them.

Setting up the camera is a fairly easy process as long as you have a wifi signal where you’re mounting the camera. I didn’t have a strong wifi signal so I just bought a cheap 6KD Wifi extender from Blink and solved that issue. The camera has many features and customizable options but the most important ones for me were auto recording on movement and the ability to connect to the camera at any time for a live feed. Actually, the most important feature is the long battery life and it’s been two months since I’ve charged the battery and it’s slightly below half right now which is pretty great especially since I was playing a lot with the camera when I first got it. The camera also has a mic and a speaker so I could if I wanted to, communicate with the person outside my door.

One important thing to note is that if you want to save the videos you need to have a subscription plan with Ring. The camera doesn’t have a built-in memory and needs Wifi to work. Any video it records would be automatically uploaded to the cloud if you have a subscription plan. If you don’t have a subscription, then the only thing you’ll be able to do with the camera is connect to it for a live video feed and thats about it. The subscription cost isn’t that bad really, I’m paying $30 a year which includes a 60-day video history and the ability to download and share the videos. If you have multiple cameras around the house they have another plan for $10 a month for all your home cameras.

Overall I really like the product and the ease of use. The ability to save 60 days of videos onto the cloud and be able to access them from an app or their website is super convenient. At 35KD it’s also fairly accessible and the non-battery version is even cheaper but obviously not as convenient. If you’re interested in getting the camera, as of this post Xcite still has them in stock.

How is the weather still great? It’s June!

I just took out my Alfa for a quick drive expecting the weather to be hot but surprisingly, it was great! I was initially going to just drive around the block but ended up driving all the way to the city via the Gulf Road. Would have kept going if it wasn’t close to curfew time.

I don’t think it’s always been like this. Back when I had a convertible I used to tell people you could drive it with the roof down 6 months a year. I’m going to have to revise that number since I’ve been driving my Alfa since mid-October. That’s nearly 8 months if I got the maths right. Obviously it’s too hot during the day but 5 onwards it’s really doable, I didn’t even break a sweat!

So if you’ve ever considered getting a convertible or a classic car but dismissed the idea because you figured you couldn’t drive it for most of the year, well, now you know you can.

COVID-19 testing, how do we compare with the rest of the world?

Kuwait is currently performing around 4,000 COVID-19 tests a day, but how does that compare with the rest of the world? Is it a lot? Too little?

According to Worldometer, a website that is trusted by the UK Government, the New York Times, BBC and many others, Kuwait ranks 20th worldwide when it comes to tests per 1 million of the population. The highest tested country in this list is the Faeroe Islands, while UAE ranks third. Below are some highlights but for the full list here is the link.

1- Faeroe Islands
2- Iceland
3- UAE
5- Bahrain
13- Denmark
16- Spain
20- Kuwait
21- Qatar
24- Italy
28- Russia
36- UK
39- USA
66- Saudi Arabia
74- Jordan
91- Lebanon
139- India
147- Egypt

Drive-Thru COVID-19 Testing Center Now Open – Invite Only

Yesterday evening the first drive-thru COVID-19 testing center opened up to the public. Because there is currently a lockdown and because of the fact we only have one testing facility at the moment, you will need to be invited by the Ministry of Health to be tested.

According to the MOH they will randomly pick people for the large scale COVID-19 testing. People will be notified that they’ve been selected by SMS and an appointment date and time will be shared with them. You are then meant to apply for a curfew pass and head to the Jazeera Airways Park & Fly facility which has been converted to a testing center.

If you receive the message from the Ministry, you head there on the day scheduled and a swab test is performed on you. Your results are usually out within 48 hours. Once done from your test, your car is disinfected by the Fire Department on the way out.

The announcement was made on the MOH Instagram and twitter accounts last night only in Arabic. I was told the reason it was published only in Arabic is that it was only for Kuwaitis, but I’ve also heard this is for expats so not sure who is right.

Then there are two other issues, the first is what if you are picked but you don’t have a car? How do you get to the testing center? The other issue is if this is a mandatory test or not? Going by the comments on twitter there are a lot of people who believe they can’t be forced to be tested, so what happens to people who don’t show up to their appointments?

MOH Starts Sharing Testing Data

Yesterday the MOH added two new categories to their daily COVID-19 updates, the number of Nasopharyngeal (NP) swab tests performed in the last 24 hours, and the total number of tests they’ve done so far. Previous to this I don’t think this data was available to the general public, or at least it wasn’t easy to find.

Common Questions and Answers Related to Supermarket Appointments

Based on the comments people have been leaving on the blog related to booking supermarket appointments, I noticed there is some confusion or lack of clarity with the process, as well as some technical issues people are facing. So below are some of the most common questions and issues with their answers.

How do I book a supermarket appointment?
Visit https://www.moci.shop/

How do I use the moci.shop website?
Watch this video:

Can I drive to the supermarket?
Yes. When you get a supermarket appointment you’ll be given two QR codes. One will give you access to the supermarket, the second is a security QR code for when you get stopped by a cop or a checkpoint.

Can I walk to the supermarket?
Yes. When you get a supermarket appointment you’ll be given two QR codes. One will give you access to the supermarket, the second is a security QR code for when you get stopped by a cop.

How often can I book an appointment?
Once every 7 days.

How long can I shop for?
You’re allowed 30 minutes of shopping but readers have said they were allowed to shop for longer.

What is “Civil Serial” number?
You can find your “Civil Serial” on the back of your Civil ID card.

My Civil ID card is expired, can I still use it to book an appointment?
Yes, you can.

On the appointment website when I selected “My address doesn’t match my Civil ID info” it asked for my “Address Auto No”, what is that?
That’s your PACI number which you can find outside your apartment door.

When I select the option to change the address it isn’t recognizing my PACI and giving me the error “Auto Number is Unknown”, how do I fix that?
Find your building PACI number using this link: http://gis.paci.gov.kw/

When I tried to book an appointment I got the error message “Sorry!! Civil ID has no data.” what do I do?
Try again using a different web browser.

I never got a confirmation email with my reference number, how can I cancel my booking?
Call 101

I canceled my appointment but the website isn’t letting me book a new appointment, what do I do?
Many readers have reported this issue, try booking at a different supermarket and if that doesn’t work call 101.

Can I take my husband/wife/mum/friend/whomever with me to the supermarket? How many people can I take with me?
Appointments are valid only for one person so you can’t take anyone with you. If you want to go with someone else to the supermarket, they will have to get their own appointment.

Can an X amount of people go grocery shopping at the same time in the same car?
Yes as long as everyone has their own appointment and for the same time.

How can I book a specific supermarket like Lulu, Saveco or Sultan? I can’t see them on the list?
If you don’t see a specific supermarket in the options you’re given that means you can’t select them. You only have access to the supermarkets in your area.

I am on visit visa and so I don’t have a Civil ID card, can I book an appointment with someone else’s Civil ID?
No, you can’t. If you’re here on your visit visa you can enter the unified number mentioned in the visa in place of the Civil ID and Serial number. This will allow you to book an appointment.

I have a problem and I can’t find the answer to my question, what do I do?
Call 101

DHL Still Delivers!

Looks like courier companies might go back to delivering packages. DHL posted that they will continue to deliver packages during the lockdown and I also heard that Aramex Shop&Ship will also resume service. I have a package coming in with UPS so I’m hoping they’ll continue delivering as well.

Drive-Thru COVID-19 Testing Soon

The MOH Instagram account posted the teaser above saying drive-thru testing is coming soon. I’m now kinda curious to see where they’d set these up, the old McDonalds on the Gulf Road would be a great spot since it already handled one of the longest drive-thru lines ever.

Update: I was just informed the first drive-thru testing location will be located at the Jazeera Airways Park & Fly facility. Will be getting more information soon.

Update2: Here is a photo of one lane they’re currently testing. There will be a total of 3 lanes when ready. 2 lanes for the rapid and swab test if u do not have a fever. 1 lane for the full test if u have a fever or if your swab test showed something wrong. You can have 4 people max per car and they will be able to process up to 100 cars per hour at this location.

Packages Are Still Being Delivered

If you’re wondering if Aramex or other companies are still delivering packages during this pandemic, they are! Even though commercial flights in and out of Kuwait have stopped, cargo flights are still operating. And even though places like New York have been hit hard because of the virus, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down or stopping our packages from being shipped to us. So far I’ve had packages ship from the US, the UK, and Germany. Packages are taking around 10 days from arriving at my Shop & Ship mailbox to being delivered to me at my home which is normal.

For example, yesterday I had my Odroid Go Advance delivered to me (pictured above). A reader had told me about it in the comments under one of my posts on March 14th. On March 15th I ordered the device and on March 19th it arrived to my New York mailbox. Yesterday (March 30th) it was delivered to me. So 9 days from arriving to my mailbox in New York to being delivered to me here in Kuwait. Customs in Kuwait are also working normally which is pretty impressive. There is something very comforting knowing I can continue to buy stuff online and have them arrive to Kuwait.

Garden of Lights Festival

Al Shaheed Park have a “Garden of Lights Festival” taking place at the moment but I can’t find anything about it on their Instagram page. I think they aren’t advertising it because of the whole Corona thing but it’s on right now.

I don’t know for how long the festival is on, but last year it took place from March 5th to 15th so might be similar. If you want to check it out then you should head over to the park pretty soon before the festival ends.

Update: The festival is until March 14

Update 2: Due to the Coronavirus, the festival had to be cut short and was closed down yesterday March 9th.

One of the writers for the publication The Points Guy UK came to Kuwait to see if it was one of the most boring tourist destinations in the world. Instead, he found Kuwait interesting even though based on his article he didn’t really venture out much outside the city. Check out his article here.

Kuwaiti Influencer Slammed for Posting Blackface Photos

A Kuwaiti makeup artist was accused of racism after she posted a video and a picture of herself painted in dark makeup, in what critics condemned as blackface.

Ghadeer Sultan first posted a short video clip on her Instagram page on Wednesday, with the song We Are the World playing in the background, showcasing her different looks in a range of skin colours and wigs.

She then posted a photo of herself in blackface, which has garnered more than 44,000 likes.

Sultan’s page, which has two million followers, was then inundated with comments denouncing her blackface while others argued she had done nothing wrong. Source

This happened last week and I thought with all the negativity she’d end up removing the photos and videos but she hasn’t yet. Not only that but she’s also been reposting all the negative news articles about her that are being published in the media into her instagram story. So not really sure what to think about all of this. I hadn’t heard of her until last week but don’t think she’s actually racist, just unaware that blackfacing can be deemed offensive.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Ghadeer Sultan – غدير سلطان (@ghdor.sultan) on

After the photos and videos went viral she posted the following statement and apology yesterday on her story (spelling mistakes fixed):

I’m sorry, I can see how blackface event must have been frustrating for you. I appreciate how difficult it must have been for you to deal with blackface. However it was absolutely not in my intention…

I was trying to show how artists could show things in a professional way.

I am professional artists and I did my best to show the beauty in colors.. the people and my millions of followers who knows me would definitely know what I’ve meant by doing this and what is my feelings towards all people’s and all colors.

Thanks for alerting me to blackface. I recognized that this can’t have been an easy thing to deal with and I’m so sorry that I have caused you to feel humiliations however on the contrary I looked more beautiful in my dark colors…

I’ve tried to explain several times why and how I’ve done this and what was my goal behind it, but I can’t really change the sensitivity behind the whole issue.

You were absolutely right to bring this to my attention, so I can immediately resolve any issues or any misunderstanding with my loved followers…

I will try everything I can to get this fixed and live with all people with love joy and peace once again… I am fully committed to my followers to show how artists could make your life peaceful and beautiful…

I will work on resolving the miss understanding and I will be careful in approaching or touching another culture, so we can all enjoy the beauty behind the arts..

Love u all

I think she’s the only influencer that’s made the news for something negative and then apologized. But, she still hasn’t removed the video or any of the blackface photos and don’t think she will.

Kuwait Still the Worst Place for Expats

Kuwait ranks last once again, a position it also held in 2018 and from 2014 to 2016. It still places last and second to last for the ease of settling in and quality of life, respectively, though it has improved for personal finance (from 50th to 38th in 2019). Results for working abroad remain bleak, though: Kuwait places 60th. While expats are mostly satisfied with the state of the economy (63% positive ratings vs. 63% globally) — the majority (59%) moved there for work-related reasons — 36% are unhappy with their work-life balance. All in all, Kuwait is the country expats would recommend the least. Source

I really think all this has to do with the simple issue that expats are made to feel unwanted in Kuwait.
