The biggest benefit for me is not having to pay just to get a quote. With the subscription, it feels like I have a team on payroll that I can bring over anytime I need something fixed, painted, built, or anything else. I love that.

The subscription to MyHome+ usually costs KD 3.750 per month, but right now they’re offering a super discounted rate of KD 2.950 per month, or just KD 14.700 for 6 months, which comes out to KD 2.450 a month. Back in the 80s, there was a ship docked in Shuwaikh that operated as a hotel and was a landmark back then. The ship had been converted into a Marriott and officially opened on February 1, 1980. The hotel had 300 rooms, and in 1989 it was renamed the Ramada Al Salam Hotel.

The hotel was originally a cruise liner called Santa Paula, launched in 1958. It was the last passenger liner ever built at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) in Virginia, USA. Today, NNS is the sole designer and builder of aircraft carriers for the United States Navy.

In 1972, the ship was acquired by a Greek company that wanted to convert her into a Mediterranean cruise ship. That plan failed, and in 1978 she was moved to Kuwait and turned into a floating hotel.

I visited the ship once in the 80s to watch the Egyptian comedian Samir Ghanem perform as Fatoota (فطوطة). That was my only time onboard, but we used to drive by it nearly every Friday as part of my family’s Gulf Road drive after lunch.

During the 1990 invasion, the ship was burned and destroyed. It was never restored and remained closed up and rusting until 2002, when it was sold for scrap.

@claudia_alrashoud met Mr. J.W. Marriott Jr. when he came to Kuwait in 1979 to inspect his soon-to-open hotel. According to her, he had come up with the idea of using the luxury liner as a hotel in Kuwait since the price of land was so expensive. According to Claudia, the unusual hotel became a popular venue with locals as well as international travelers. The onshore coffee shop overlooking the pool was known for having the best fried zubaidi in town, while the lounge in the bow of the ship offered impressive views of ships leaving Shuwaikh port.

One of the members of the team that brought the ship to Kuwait left a comment under an old post I had on the ship in which he shared some interesting details:

I was one of the team of men from Milford Haven , in Wales Gt Britain who went over to Kuwait to bring the ship in and set her down ready to be turned into a hotel . We stayed at the hotel Messila Beach until the ship came into the bay , we then joined the ship and she was towed in to her resting place which had already been dug out for the ship to sit level on the sea bed .Big diggers with wires connected to them towed her in after the tugs had let go , If I remember the name of the company running the job was Hedley Fraser salvage co ltd . It’s been a long time and it was only by chance I came across this article .

The hotel in Kuwait will mark a first for the hotel chain. It is a docked ship, the former cruise liner Stella Polaris, which will have 300 rooms.

The nucleus for the Kuwait management team are five Egyptian and Lebanese men who spent the last several weeks in Stamford.
lbrhim K. Hanna, from Cairo, spent much of his time poring over duty rosters and purchase orders in preparation for his position as restaurant manager. In the basement, Ahmed Aboushama, also from Cairo, was wrapped in a heavy parka as he carved meat in one of the freezers. He will be the food and beverage manager of the Kuwait Marriott.

Mr. Aboushama was being supervised by Ron Schansman of Holland, who will be going to Kuwait, but who will then move onto other new hotels in the Middle East.

Just a quick update on my post yesterday about trying to stop Eureka from spamming me with SMS’s. According to Future Mobility the company that Eureka hired to send out the SMS’s, the service doesn’t rely on phone numbers.

Eureka used an Ad Zone geo-targeted SMS service that Future Mobility provides. This service doesn’t rely on numbers, instead, it automatically sends SMS messages to customers physically present in a selected area, using the operator’s mobile towers.

Future Mobility doesn’t have control over which numbers receive these messages, it depends entirely on the telecom operator. What they recommended to me is to activate a Zain service called Do Not Disturb (DND). I don’t know what that service is and can’t find any info on the Zain website so looks like I’m going to have to call Zain to find out.

It’s really interesting though, I assumed bulk SMS services required phone numbers, the fact they don’t is both fascinating and upsetting since even if you work hard to keep your number out of databases, you’ll still get SPAM.

I got a message from my dogs’ vet last week (IVH) saying that, for the first time ever in Kuwait, they’ve introduced pet insurance. It’s a collaboration between them and the insurance company GIG Takaful, and it covers both cats and dogs. The coverage includes:

• Consultations and examinations
• Accidents and illnesses
• Surgeries, medications, and hospital admissions
• Blood tests and CT scans
• Euthanasia and cremation (where applicable)
• Third-party liability (for dogs)

The Kuwaiti fashion label Emanmoon just opened their first international pop-up, and they chose one of the most stylish summer destinations for it, Saint-Tropez.

Emanmoon is known for their elegant, free-size pieces made from premium fabrics which are perfect for hot summers and traveling. Their collections are designed and made in Kuwait and focus on timeless silhouettes, soft color palettes, and effortless style.

They chose Saint-Tropez for their first international pop-up because the city attracts a global, fashion-forward crowd that appreciates unique designs. It was the perfect place to introduce the brand this summer.

With so much competition in Kuwait’s beauty salon scene, any new spot really needs to stand out. That’s exactly what the new Laha Lounge has done.

The popular London burger spot Supernova is coming to Kuwait. Supernova is part of BVC Hospitality, the same group behind other hit brands like CRÈME, NAC and Barnaby (my favorite).

Supernova is being brought to Kuwait by Gulf Food Enterprises Co., the same company bringing NAC, which will be opening in the Hessah District. The first Supernova location is set to open at Tilal Complex around September or October.

I tried Supernova in London last March, back when it was all over TikTok. I think I waited around 45 minutes in line? Back then it felt like I had stepped into real life TikTok since I had watched so many videos of it before. It felt weird being there in person, like I was inside TikTok. The burger was a good smashed burger, but not really worth waiting in line for. It would be a good no-frills, get your burger and leave kind of spot.

Supernova Kuwait isn’t the first Supernova outside of London, they recently opened in Bahrain.

Between Kuwait Towers and JŌN on the Gulf Road are three abandoned restaurants that have been sitting empty for years (Google Maps). They’re clustered together in an area that was called “Dhiafa Village.” Back in 2008, three restaurants opened there: Trader Vic’s, Letter D’amour, and Don Mario’s. I always thought the area had a lot of potential, and it looks like it’s finally going to be put to good use.

Dhow Hospitality won the bid for the location and will be opening three major concepts there:

La Petite Maison
3Fils
Matbakhi by Sawsan

LPM is a high-end French Mediterranean restaurant that most people are already familiar with. 3Fils is a Japanese concept that started in the UAE and was recently voted the No. 1 restaurant in the MENA region. Finally, Matbakhi is a local concept by chef @sawsansmatbakhi and is my favorite (and a favorite for many others) when it comes to authentic Palestinian food.

The new name for the village will be “Peninsula,” which makes sense since the property stretches into the sea and is surrounded by water on three sides. I saw renderings of the area and can confidently say there’s nothing else like it in Kuwait right now. The three concepts will have both indoor and outdoor seating, and together should create a very cool vibe.

LPM will take over the first building on the left, Matbakhi the second one on the right, and 3Fils will occupy the third building, which is the closest to the sea.

Construction on the project will start this summer, with openings expected by the end of the year.

Keeta, the giant Chinese food delivery service, is coming to Kuwait to compete with the likes of Talabat, Deliveroo, Jahez, and Cari. I hadn’t heard of Keeta until recently, but they’re the world’s largest food delivery platform, with over 770 million users, 98 million daily orders, and more than 7 million drivers.

I don’t think there is room for another delivery service in Kuwait, but they were able to do really well in Saudi, and quickly. It took them just four months after launching to become the third-largest food delivery platform there. So they might do the same here and push someone else out of the top three.

To capture such a large chunk of the Saudi market so quickly, Keeta replicated the strategy they used in China: ultra-low prices and no delivery fees. From what I’ve been told, they’ll be waiving delivery fees in Kuwait as well, at least for the first 12 months.

Their delivery speed roadmap for Kuwait is also ambitious. The initial plan is a consistent 25–30 minute delivery time across Kuwait, with phase two targeting under 20 minutes in dense areas. The long-term goal is a 15-minute “hyper-local” service.

Another cool feature they’ll have is Keeta points which you earn with every order. You’ll be able to convert those points into airline miles, hotel loyalty programs, or lifestyle memberships.

Being a Chinese company, they’re obviously very tech-focused. This past December, they launched a small-scale drone delivery service in Dubai, using drones to deliver food and medical supplies to Keeta delivery stations around the city. In China they’ve also been experimenting with autonomous vehicles and delivery robots. Not sure if we’ll ever get any of these here, but even if we don’t, their app and restaurant software system is supposedly one of the best.

They’re planning to officially launch in Kuwait this coming September, with a soft launch before with select restaurants.

Russell Peters, the popular stand-up comedian, is coming back to Kuwait as part of his Relax World Tour. This isn’t his first time performing in Kuwait, but the last time he was scheduled to come was in October 2023 and that show was canceled.

Fame Entertainment (@fame.entmt), the same company that recently brought Fluffy, Craig David and Blue to Kuwait are the ones who are bringing Russell Peters back. There will take place on October 20th so I expect tickets to go on sale at the end of summer. Link

Kuwait’s favorite hardware store, Bin Nisf, just got a major makeover. Last week, they closed down their old location and opened in a brand new building right behind the original store. I tend to do a lot of DIY work at home and on my cars, and both Bin Nisf and Ace Hardware have been lifesavers. Between the two, there’s hardly anything I can’t find in Kuwait.

The new store is much bigger than the old one, and according to an employee, they’re still expanding. The old location is also going to get revamped and eventually connect to the new space once it’s done. I honestly have no idea what they’re going to do with all that room.

If you’ve never been to Bin Nisf, they’re a hardware store that’s been around since 1970 and carry everything from screws to power tools. You’ll find professionals shopping there, but also DIY hobbyists like me. It’s the place to go, and their prices are usually much cheaper than the market.

If you’re a Bin Nisf regular, everything is a lot more organized now. The old space had gotten pretty messy over the past couple of years after they closed down half the store for the revamp. The new store is now split across two floors, with the main section located in the basement. The aisles are wider and longer, there’s clear signage, and all the items are neatly displayed. It’s a huge improvement.

If you go, don’t do what I did and park outside the old store, then walk around to the back. Once I got to the new location, I realized there was plenty of parking right there. Google Maps still points to the old store but if you want a map of the exact location, they’ve posted one on their Instagram account @binnisfkw although it really is easy to find since it’s just the building behind it.

Note: I couldn’t find the Bin Nisf cat that used to sleep on the shelves, no idea where he hangs out now.

Yesterday night, Alshaya officially revealed the location of the first Ulta Beauty store opening in the Middle East. The store will be located at The Avenues, in the spot where Dean & Deluca used to be, and according to a source, it’s expected to open this October. That will be followed by another Ulta Beauty store opening at Mall of the Emirates in Dubai later this year.

Ulta Beauty is known for offering a mix of luxury, drugstore, and indie brands all under one roof. Unlike Sephora, which focuses mainly on high-end products, Ulta carries everything from Dior and MAC to NYX and Maybelline. Another major draw is its in-store salons, offering services like haircuts, styling, facials, and brow treatments—something unique for a beauty retailer.

The Avenues location will be the first Ulta Beauty location outside the U.S.

Better Books, the popular used bookshop, has reopened. They shut down their old location last year and I thought they were gone for good, but they’re kinda back now.

I’m saying kinda because the new spot doesn’t have the same large space or cozy charm as their old basement location. Better Books is still in Salmiya but now pretty small and awkwardly located on the first floor of an apartment building. They used to have over 10,000 used books for sale, but now only a fraction are on display while the rest are in storage.

They couldn’t find a larger space within their budget, so for now they’re operating out of this smaller one until they find something better.

Better Books, if you’ve never been, is a great spot to buy used books. They have everything from children’s books to cookbooks, novels, self-help, you name it. They also have a cool buyback policy where you can buy a book and then sell it back when you’re done. If you have books you don’t need, they’ll also take them off you and give you store credit. What I like about them is that you’ll often find old books and magazines from the 80s, like Archie and MAD comics, or Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books.

This is like their third or fourth Instagram account since they lost access to the previous ones. If you happen to know of a larger but still affordable location for them, reach out and let them know.

A few months ago, I posted about a guy named Abdullah AlJarallah. During the day, he managed investment deals, but at night, he was in the kitchen perfecting his pizza-making skills. He operated out of a small commercial kitchen with no set menu, timings, or delivery. Whenever he planned to make pizza, he’d let his followers know what was on offer and when, and they’d place their orders and pick them up.

A lot has changed since then, and Abdullah just opened his first restaurant called Jars (@atjars).

Jars is a small, cozy pizza spot located in Hawalli. It’s right off the main highway, so you don’t have to deal with the usual Hawalli traffic. The interior has a basic, slightly industrial look because he had to work with a limited budget, but it works well for the concept. Abdullah also keeps things simple with a set menu. It starts with a welcome bite of focaccia and butter, followed by two seasonal starters. The mains include four pizzas: Margherita, mushroom, pepperoni, and a fourth one that changes often. For dessert, there are two choices.

Yesterday the starters were Bresaola and a watermelon feta cheese salad. For the pizzas we were two so we ordered the pepperoni (Pep Talk) and the mushroom (Funghi Bianco). We also ordered a gelato and strawberries with mascarpone for dessert.

The starters were good. The bresaola was great, though the portion was small. You can’t go wrong with a watermelon and feta cheese salad in summer. Between the two pizzas, I liked the pepperoni more and would order it again next time, or maybe try the Margherita or whatever special pizza Abdullah’s cooking that day. His crust is very crispy with little to no flop, so if you’re not into soft floppy pizzas, you’re gonna like this. I also preferred the gelato over the strawberries with mascarpone for dessert.

Jars opened about a week ago, and even though it wasn’t a full house when I visited, the service was good and friendly. The set menu costs KD 8.750 per person (doesn’t include drinks and dessert), and you need to reserve ahead since they don’t accept walk-ins.
