PROMOTED: A-Line Design

When considering your ideal workspace, it is essential that your surroundings speak as a testament to your chosen environment. Methodically thought-out plans and endless hours of laboring over various design options, floorplans, furniture and accessories are only part of the labor of love required to envision, and then fully see that vision come to life.

Interior design as a concept is actually more than just what you see around you; rather, it’s about how the space that surrounds you makes you feel, and how it captures your singular and exclusive personality whether as an individual, or a brand.

Thus, was born the idea of A-LINE DESIGN, an independent interior design studio committed to the planning and execution of conceptual spaces for commercial projects and residential as well. Based in Kuwait and Lebanon and servicing the GCC and MENA region, A-LINE DESIGN is led by experienced interior architects and designers, the studio considers passion as the essence of their design journey, according to their vision statement.

If you find yourself asking, “Why would I consider an interior design studio when I can do it on my own?” The answer is simple: at A-LINE DESIGN, the team has studied meticulously the way your environment can relate to you, thus becoming responsible for creating spaces that are not only rich in beauty and function, but also ones that exude aesthetic positivity and evoke comfort and wellness. A-Line can help by enriching the experience through the utilization of the space to its fullest potential.

Not interested in the ordinary or mundane, A-LINE DESIGN instead seeks to create spaces that inspire the mind and spirit, constantly exploring creatively so that every room, every project is its own unique, one-of-a-kind space.

Working together with the client – considered a design partner and active member of the team – A- LINE DESIGN takes time to fully understand your needs to help you create a harmonic and dynamically impactful design. After thoroughly inspecting the space and learning your inimitable requirements, the team then prepares the concept design as it aligns with your objectives. This process of conceptualizing is in fact what A-Line Design considers the key to their success.

A-LINE DESIGN is a studio that is driven by passion and the desire to create masterful and distinctive spaces that inspire and stimulate. There is no singular ‘signature’ style, as every individual or brand carries a uniquely original sense of self, one which A-LINE DESIGN can help hone.

If you’re thinking about renovating your home or workspace to a more impactful and rousing design, look no further than A-LINE DESIGN.

Kuwait On Top of Things

I was talking to my friends in Dubai on Thursday letting them know what was going on in Kuwait and to my surprise, life was still normal over there. People were still going to work, going out drinking and partying, going to the gym as if there wasn’t a global pandemic.

It made me realize how on top of things Kuwait is right now. We were one of the first countries to shut down schools, we were given a public holiday not because we have an emergency but because they were being proactive in avoiding an emergency. Over the weekend cops were blocking off access to the beach so people don’t end up hanging out there and last night they announced the closure of malls and hair salons.

Things aren’t perfect for sure, but I can’t think of any other country I’d rather be in right now during this pandemic.

My New Favorite Supermarket

Yesterday while in the city picking up lunch I decided to pass by Shamiya Co-op to pick up some stuff since it was the close. As I got closer to the entrance I noticed a sign outside in English and Arabic asking me to sanitize my hands and pick up gloves. Once I walked in they had a sanitizer machine for me to use and a basket full of disposable gloves to wear. Everyone shopping had gloves on which was pretty cool since it made me feel a lot more comfortable.

I’m not sure if other Co-ops are doing the same thing but private supermarkets like Sultan, Lulu, and City Center aren’t doing this for sure. Some places like Trolley don’t even have contactless payment yet and require you to still type in your pin code which it the last thing I want to do right now.

If your local co-op has the same setup let me know in the comments.

2020 Land Rover Defender Prices in Kuwait

The all-new Land Rover Defender 110 will be launching worldwide any day now and the first shipment arrives in Kuwait in May. The first shipment is already sold out but I was told there is a second shipment coming in July with cars still available. Prices for the 4-cylinder model start at around KD18,000 while the 6-cylinder model starts at KD24,000. These are the prices of the models that the dealer has specced out but you can also build your own Defender with the 4-cylinder starting at KD16,600 and the 6-cylinder from KD22,130. If you do build your own then expect delivery sometime in September/October.

Here is the link to the local Land Rover website where you can price and build your own Defender.

Contactless Payment Limit Increased Due to Coronavirus

Knet and the local banks have agreed to increase the transaction amount for contactless payments without having to use your pin code from KD10 to KD25. I’m a big fan of just tapping to pay, especially now with the whole corona situation so pretty glad they’ve done this.

Movie Theaters Closed Down

Yesterday it was announced that in order to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus, movie theaters in Kuwait would be temporarily shut down. I understand the idea behind this, but I think there were more people waiting in line for a burger at Wachamean last night than there were people at the movies. If we’re closing down theaters and schools because it’s this big of a deal, then we should really close down the whole country for two weeks and not just the cinemas.

Note: Just to clarify, I don’t want the country to shut down, quite the opposite, I think businesses are suffering as is.

Kuwait’s Official Covid-19 Website

The website is currently soft launch phase but still contains a good amount of data. My comments would be that I’d like to see some travel information like which countries are flights restricted from. I’d also like to see a section on temporary measures taken because of the Corona outbreak like how waiters must wear masks and gloves now or how shisha places are temporary not allowed to serve shisha (like is this true for example?). Here is the link.

Thanks Cold2zero

Inside Al Salam Palace Museum

Because of the Corona outbreak, all of the Al Salam Palace Museum tours have been canceled until further notice. It sucks because they had just opened, but if you’d still like a peek inside of the museum, then check out this website. You’ll find a bunch of photos and a video of the museum there that should give you an idea of what to expect once the tours start again.

Update: Found this video online as well that gives you a nice walkthrough.

Garden of Lights Festival

Al Shaheed Park have a “Garden of Lights Festival” taking place at the moment but I can’t find anything about it on their Instagram page. I think they aren’t advertising it because of the whole Corona thing but it’s on right now.

I don’t know for how long the festival is on, but last year it took place from March 5th to 15th so might be similar. If you want to check it out then you should head over to the park pretty soon before the festival ends.

Update: The festival is until March 14

Update 2: Due to the Coronavirus, the festival had to be cut short and was closed down yesterday March 9th.

Review: 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450

A couple of weeks ago I wanted to go visit Al Bohayra Farm and since it was pretty far, I figured I might as well take the opportunity to test drive a car that’s more comfortable than mine. I mean out of the 4 cars I own at the moment my FJ is the most comfortable one which is weird because my FJ isn’t even comfortable. So I got in touch with Mercedes and to see if they had a new GLE I could review. I had seen the new GLE at their Avenues showroom and really liked the way it looked so I was very curious to see how it would drive as well. Luckily for me, Mercedes had just put a brand new silver GLE 450 into their test drive fleet and I would be the first person to take it out.

The new facelifted GLE launched last year and like with their other models, I really like the design direction Mercedes has been taking recently. I never used to be a fan of the Mercedes styling and had always been a Beemer guy but their new cars just look so damn good. Even when I went to pick up the GLE from their showroom I spent a good amount of time checking out the new small Mercedes A-Class since it looked pretty great too.

The GLE as expected turned out to be the perfect car for my road trip. It was spacious, super comfortable and just a really nice and quiet space to be in. Even when I ended up on a pothole-ridden road the car ate it up like it was nothing. But the main reason I’ve become such a huge fan of Mercedes is because of their dash cluster. From all the car manufacturers out there, I think Mercedes have gotten the whole digital dashboard thing right. I first experienced it in the Mercedes S-Class years ago and now it’s trickled down to all their models including the GLE. I can’t think of another car manufacturer that combines the dash screen with the center control screen more elegantly and cleanly that they do. And unlike the new more expensive new G-Class, the center screen is actually a touchscreen in the GLE. It was something I found annoying in the G-Class and it’s been fixed here.

I’ve been thinking about replacing my FJ Cruiser with another SUV since I’ve had my car for 10 years now, and one of the reasons I wanted to take the GLE out was to see if it could be a possible replacement. Well, the answer to that is going to have to be a solid no. Basically I realized I can’t own a comfortable normal car or I might not want to drive any of my other cars. First world problem for sure, but that’s currently my reality at the moment.

That’s not to say the GLE was a perfect car, over the short period of time I had it I did discover some minor annoyances. One thing I was surprised with was the fact the car didn’t have adaptive cruise control. It had all the other bells and whistles like lane-keeping assist, automated parking, assisted emergency braking and 3D surround cameras, but no adaptive control which was odd on a fully loaded Mercedes at this price point. It’s kind of a must-have option nowadays especially systems that can work in slow traffic. Another issue I had was with Apple CarPlay. Although it worked flawlessly in the G-Class, my experience with CarPlay in the GLE was fairly buggy with the system crashing on me more than once. But more importantly, unlike in the G-Class, CarPlay wouldn’t take up the full width of the display but instead just occupy a smaller boxed area in the middle of the screen with black bars on the side. I hated that since it made what is a large gorgeous display seem a lot smaller than it is. But, it’s just a software issue that can be fixed with a software upgrade.

The GLE starting price is KD 22,700 but the model I drove cost KD 27,500. It’s a really good looking car with plenty of power and all the options you could want (except for adaptive cruise control). If I didn’t have any of my other cars this would definitely be one I’d consider. I loved the silver color and I didn’t even mind the interior color although if I had to choose I’d probably go with black. When I went to pick up the car from the dealership I walked through the quick service garage (pictured above) and it’s one of the nicest and cleanest garages I’ve seen. If you want to test drive this car you can, here is a link to the GLE website with a form you can fill out.
